The New Yorker: The Kitchen Sink Yet to Be Thrown (at Hillary Clinton)
The Kitchen Sink Yet To Be Thrown

26 Apr 2008 08:28 pm

Hendrik Hertzberg says it well:

Hillary Clinton has not, in fact, survived the worst that the Republican attack machine (and its pilotless drones online and on talk radio) can dish out. We will learn what the worst really means if she is nominated. The Commie law firm will be only the beginning. Many tempting targets—from Bill’s little-examined fund-raising and business activities during the past seven years to the prospect of his hanging around the White House in some as yet undefined role for another four or eight years to whatever leftovers from the Clinton “scandals” of the nineteen-nineties can be retrieved from the dumpster and reheated—remain to be machine-gunned. The whole Clinton marital soap opera, obviously off limits within the Democratic fold, will offer ample material for what Obama calls “distractions.” To take the most obvious example, the former President’s social life since leaving the White House will become, if not “fair game,” big game—and some of these right-wing dirtbags are already hiring bearers and trying on pith helmets for the safari. Is this a “there” where the Democratic Party really wants to go?

but the old stuff is potent as hell. Most Americans react like Pavlov's dog to this shit. Hertzberg is spot on as always.

3. Anyone who believes the Clintons are fully vetted and pre-cleaned is a fool.
There's a reason why the right wing is helping Clinton in the primaries and it ain't because republicans want to run a campaign against our best and strongest.

Now do you really believe that if Obama's traveling chief of staff was a Muslim that the MSM "wouldn't go there?"

77. Bingo -- the Lesbian Bomb -- an adulterous, lesbian relationship with a Muslim woman
First of all, I don't think that the rumor is true. I also don't think that being a lesbian in any way disqualifies anyone for office, though given the mentality of red states, I don't think a lesbian can win the presidency.

The point isn't whether the story is true; it's that the right wing blogosphere has laid the groundwork for it appearing to be possible.

Kerry wasn't a coward in Vietnam, and Gore never said he invented the internet. It doesn't matter.

Ultimately, the only thing Hillary will be able to do is say, "I did not have sex with that woman, Ms. Huma Abedin ..."

And that point, endgame.

90. Don't you think that Hillary and her staff have already put in place a plan to keep
another Swiftboating to happen? They ain't stupid. Too much is at stake for them to sit back and let this thing blow up in their faces. The fact that the woman still works for Hillary tells me that the whole thing is manufactured, ready to be sprung the minute Hillary gets the nom (if she DOES get the nom, which I don't think she will). I think she and her staff have their knives out and poised for use against such an attack...seriously...

4. I hate that it's come to this but I have to suggest
that some forward-thinking 527's or other groups start attacking Hillary with some of this kitchen sink, but they have to be completely independent of the Obama campaign - not any sign of any connection anywhere - which might be the hardest thing to do.

Give me an organization with some money and I could certainly give them some ideas about how to spend it. I'm sure many of us could.

Like I said, I hate that it's come to this. But I think that it has, and the Clintons need to be taken out.* They asked for it. They don't want to accept defeat graciously, then it has to be handled ungraciously.

* for any idiots who don't do context, I mean their campaign demolished, not physically "taken out".

16. Nope.
I don't suggest that lightly but I think that there SHOULD be a response in kind, every time the Hillary campaign or one of their surrogates launches a ridiculous attack. They claim they are "vetting" Obama, showing why he can't win in the GE. Well if that is the case being argued, then some Obama supporters need to start laying out the other side of the argument.

My only problem with the general approach is using it against a Democrat. I think it MUST be used against the republicans, or we will continue to lose.

It is a shame that a large percentage of Americans only respond to the negative attacks, but it appears to be FACT - therefore it is what has to be done.

If it were not the case, then we wouldn't be having any discussion, except about President Kerry's upcoming re-election.

Oh wait... I guess we'd actually be looking at candidates to succeed Gore after his second term. :)

7. What we believe -- what they believe
The idea that Hillary has been "vetted" is ludicrous. Those of us who are engaged, who read the news on the Internet, who participate in the blogs, who follow these things closely, know that Whitewater was a GOP fraud, have moved beyond Monica, have forgotten about Travelgate and Filegate.

HOWEVER, we are about 10 percent of the population. Many of the others still think these things were real or don't know much about them other than the names. I have acquaintances and family members who believe these things. It wouldn't take much of a barrage by Rush and O'Reilly and the whole Faux News stable to put them all back front and center. I think we could see a Hillary campaign spending all it's time trying to re-debunk old rumors and "scandals" and not being able to get its message out.

Don't give the American people that much credit. There is an incredible amount of ignorance out there.

sad, because again, it's a distraction. People do focus more on her tone than on what she is saying, which is, as you say, indicative of the pettiness of the pundits, the MSM, and at least some of the voters.

76. Ha! William Jefferson Clinton: Influence peddler extraordinaire
A spokesman for Mr. Clinton said the former president knew that Mr. Giustra had mining interests in Kazakhstan but was unaware of “any particular efforts” and did nothing to help. Mr. Giustra said he was there as an “observer only” and there was “no discussion” of the deal with Mr. Nazarbayev or Mr. Clinton.

But Moukhtar Dzhakishev, president of Kazatomprom, said in an interview that Mr. Giustra did discuss it, directly with the Kazakh president, and that his friendship with Mr. Clinton “of course made an impression.”i Mr. Dzhakishev added that Kazatomprom chose to form a partnership with Mr. Giustra’s company based solely on the merits of its offer.

65. The Peter Paul case will see both Hillary and Bill testifying during a GE month about their shady
fund raising practices. Last I read it was scheduled to hit right about November. Peter Paul is scum represented by a right wing attack group that is connected to Richard Scaife:

Awfully cozy with a guy who spent millions trying to prove she killed Vince Foster.

But then she's been getting awfully cozy with some real pigs for a while now. Mark Penn being the lard laden icing on the cake.

I guess she figured if she couldn't beat them, she'd join them. She's in for a rude awakening as soon as she steps out of that little bubble world she borrowed from George.

One of the biggest donors to Hillary Clinton and the Clinton library, Marc Rich's wife is a long, national nightmare waiting to happen. The soft donations going into the Clinton library are justifiably questionable, although I'm glad the Obama camp has shown the restraint that the Clintons either will not or cannot demonstrate. I'm sure that the GOP would be less forgiving.

Our country, thanks to the Repukes and our criminal-in-chief, has many serious problems to resolve. We don't need any more self-serving egoists who care zero for anyone or thing besides the rich and corporations running this country.

in case she becomes the Nominee. If, by some miracle, she does become the nominee, it will be full trottle till November. It would be very ugly, and will make our head spin. If you think that the primaries are not addressing the issues of the American people, you haven't seen nothing yet. It will be old politics as usual, and because Hillary promoted old politics as being totally legitimate and fair, she will have nothing to say while they slime her on every network news show there is.

That's why Obama has to be our nominee; Hillary has fully vetted him at this point, and then some.

Someone needs to whisper this in their ears. You know everything has been thrown at Obama because they keep repeating the same junk over and over. If there was more, Hillary would of found it. We already see how he is handling it. Why don't more people see this????

45. No question, either Democratic candidate will face the dirtiest campaign in recent memory
Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 01:14 PM by TragedyandHope
The Rethugs are up against the wall after 8 years of Bush, so they're willing to do anything for the slim change of victory.

Mark my words, there will be a point where they stop pussy-footing and just decide to go forward with full-on 100% sexist or 100% racist attacks. If they can succeed in turning the focus that direction instead of the economy and Iraq, they will have won half the battle.

From our Democratic Primary season, it seems that Obama is far better equipped to wage a successful strategic battle against their tactics and still connect with voters to convince them that he can truly offer something different from the past 8 years.

I'm finding out more everyday what the RW is going to use to destroy Clinton with in the GE if they get the chance. You can tell how bad they want to do it if you listen to the Repub pundits on cable praising Clinton and begging for her to win while they're smirking and giggling.

55. Why is Hillary looking for a fight with the wrong person?
What is wrong with her!???

Oh yeah? 2012 perhaps???

We need a break from the past. Think about your children and grand children some day... Our young are sure as hell thinking about their parents and grandparents, struggling in this rat race, its shameful what's going on in this great country. We need a game changer in the Washington political scene.

Obama brings the best plan to the table. "The Blueprint for Change" www.barackobama.com/issues

We don't have time to be fighting each other... We need to be fighting for the survival of our country.

57. 43 recs for "hide our heads in the sand 'cause we are scared of the MSM and RNC oppo"?
Is this the Democratic Party or is this place full of wimps being scared to death by a bunch of Freeper moles who know how to do their job only too well?

The majority of Americans who call themselves leftist would not survive for a second in a real class struggle in a country like Boliva or Peru or in Spain under Franco where the stakes were life or death. This whole thread is a perfect demonstration of everything that is wrong about DU right now.

Rev. Wright just gave a beautiful speech that proves he is worth ten of either Obama or Clinton, and the people participating in this thread do not even begin to get it. Read some Leonard Boff and some Jon Sobrino, the liberation theologists if you are Christians. Read some Angela Davis if you are not. Stop listening to the MSM and anyone who tells you to hate another Democrat, because that person is not your political ally, that person is an RNC mole. Listen to your conscience instead and the voice of reason.

66. The very idea that Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama can reasonably be considered leftist...
is an absurdist joke. Both are centre-right, like the majority of the American political mainstream; Obama is to all appearances marginally further to the political left than Clinton, but not so much as John Edwards (who isn't a leftist either).

And in case you haven't noticed, we aren't in Peru, or Bolivia, or Spain under Franco (and if the American political situation were in any way comparable, Hillary Clinton is one of the last people I would trust to lead things in a new direction).Politics is situational and local. We are in the United States, and the fact remains that Senator Clinton has a host of unsavoury personal connections that can and will be exploited against her, and which make her a likely far weaker general election candidate than she already appears to be.

61. Gore Vidal has said that the media attacks on Hillary are worse than on Eleanor.
I will find you the link if you insist, but it is true. It is in my journals. He was at a dinner party and someone said the attacks on Eleanor were worse and he said that no one ever actually came out and accused Eleanor of murdering people and recommended murdering Eleanor and all the other vile shit that people have done with Hillary.

If anyone in DU really thinks that the Democrats should keep her off a ticket out of fear of what Rush or O'Reilly or Kristol or even supposedly mainstream media like the GE/NBC family are going to do, then I wonder if you have the guts to be in the party of the Roosevelts.

There may be a lot of reasons to worry about Clinton, but media reprisals is not one. Nor is reprisal a reason to doubt Obama. A united Democratic Party can kick the MSM's lying butt from the convention all the way to November.

67. Better reason for keeping her off the ticket: she's a sure loser.
This is politics. She is very much hated by many people. She has a whole trainload of baggage that will be dredged up and gone over endlessly in the media. She is viewed as untrustworthy by a majority of Americans, according to recent public opionion surveys. How any of this makes it a good idea to have her on the ticket is something I just don't see, but then I thought the point was to actually win in November.

92. I agree - the "vetting" or lack thereof really isn't the point
Hillary was very unpopular during Bill's presidency. Moderates don't like her. There has to be some appeal to the swing voters or you can't be elected. Obama has a good chance. No the racists won't vote for him, but most of them are already in the Republican party anyway. Hillary just isn't electable.

95. I agree with you on that point. I sometimes think we let our enthusiasm overcome our
common sense and past experience in presidential campaigns. Weren't we all in a daze when Kerry got Swiftboated successfully? Those of us who knew full well that Kerry had enemies because of his antiwar activities were probably not as dazed as younger DUers, but we pushed our fears to one side. Then, of course, it happened. And the perfectly timed CBS TANG memo. And we just loved Teresa, despite what fears we may have had about her temperament and her "foreignness." No, we were good little doobees...

I'm not saying we don't have to sweat the Republicans' unvarying use of the kitchen sink. But how weird that the other side has to steer so far from the real issues to get votes.

Isn't it clear by now when Fox News is cheerleading for Hillary to win the nomination that the Republicans are jacking off at the mere prospect of facing her in the GE? They know they can destroy her in the GE and they will if she's the nominee.

Fortunately that's NOT going to happen because the nominee will be Obama!

Seriously, thanks for posting this. I'm getting really sick and tired of Clinton supporters saying that Obama hasn't been vetted and the rethugs are going to unload on him...I think they would unload on her even worse. She's done all of their rovian work for them already, so there's not much left. Oh, don't get me wrong, they will attack him, but it will probably be a re-hashing of issues that the Clinton campaign brought up during the primaries.
