Dirty Tricks in Pennsylvania

Dirty Tricks" We know who really won.......

By Christopher - Apr 23rd, 2008

If you were planning to vote yesterday in the Pennsylvania primary you had another thing coming as reports of voting machine problems in all of Obama's stronghold precincts. Several machines were malfunctioning in the city, leading one local community leader to allege "dirty tricks" were the cause.

Many residents trying to cast ballots yesterday found long lines and broken machines and intimidation across the region.

Six of ten machines were down at a busy Delaware County polling site. It took 103 people 8 hours to vote in Upper Darby, which is heavily populated by immigrant and first time voters. Many of those freshly-minted voters had difficulties using the six machines that still functioned. "Hell of a day for six of the machines to go down," said one poll worker.

In South Philadelphia, voting machines were broken at 4th and Ritner, smack dab in the middle of a Obama strong hold. "The dirty tricks have begun," said John Lucas, spokesman for the election board, who sees a conspiracy.

There's a reason Rendell said Obama could win PA in the GE if he was the nom. He wasn't assesing the demographics, he was giving Obama permission.

126. There are allot of avenues we can take on this...
Do as I have done, send feedback to the news networks asking why they arent covering the PA voter issues. This really needs to be brought to light...but we have to demand that the MSM own up to its responsibilities.

Also be sure to pass word along to any democratic radio stations, blogs and other websites so they may help pursue this.

We cant let another election be stolen...by anyone.

(NBC) use the pull down menu to pick which show you want to provide feedback to (I suggest all the news shows).
http://www.nbc.com/Footer/Contact_Us /

(ABC) There is a drop down menu to select a show or category. Select all the ones you feel are applicable.
http://abc.go.com/site/contactus.html?lid=ABCCOMGlobalF ...

(CBS) same as the above two, there is a menu to allow you to send comments to numerous shows

And no, I'm not blaming Hillary, but why is it mainly in African-American heavy districts that this happens? Florida in 2000, ohio in 2004, and now this.

edit* okay, well maybe I was wrong.

"Because of the expected large turnout, election judges' difficulty getting machines started at a polling place in North Braddock and another in the city's Banksville section prompted some concern.

At these two sites, election judges, clerks and inspectors, all nominally paid volunteers, initially were unable to print out verification that the voting machines had been set at zero. A technician was dispatched to each location and helped to properly set up the machines, upon further inspection machines had been manipulated and set with 500 to 1500 votes calibrated to Clinton."

Voter Action filed a lawsuit to keep the polling places open 2 more hours,
but the judge refused.

Its RARE that polling places are not kept open in cases like this.
VERY RARE.

But in light of the down right despicable campaign waged against Senator Obama by the Clinton campaign in Pennsylvania, and what I perceive as voter suppression in the Philadelphia area, including many long time Democrats that I met during my GOTV adventures in the predominantly African-American wards of South Philadelphia west of Broad Street who were wiped from the voter registration roles (three of whom I met gathered around the scene of a shooting at a Mifflin st. bar), and the lack of provisional ballots at these voting locations...

8. the trick with the machines - send too few, send broken ones to polling places
then people flat out can't vote.

With paper ballots/optical scanners you can vote as long as you have a ballot
and a flat surface.

North Carolina has mostly optical scan, but in the 20 counties (of 100) that have
touchscreens, our state requires those counties to have 1 machine per 250 voters.

Since we also have early voting (about 2 1/2 weeks long) everyone has plenty of
opportunities to vote.

AND we now have same day registration during early voting.

Indiana is going to be the next voter supression state, NC will NOT.

22. I think it was broken so that no one could vote on it
as much as I hate DRE/computerized voting, that was all they had,
and the machine was not usable.

Generally about 115 people can vote on one (1) machine during a 12 hour day.

So because that machine was broken, a bottle neck was created, and people had to wait.

With paper ballot optical scans, everyone could keep on voting even if the one
machine was broken.

AN optical scanner can handle at least 3,000 ballots in one day.
Thats far more than usually show up to vote at one polling place.

If you have a black bic stick pen and a ballot you can vote - any flat
surface will do.

49. I built and repaired computers professionally for years...
and you rarely get multiple identical machines that just crash on a particular day. The odds of 6 going down in a single location are pretty damn low. I don't care for this 'computers - who knows what they will do? They are strange and wondrous things!' stuff. I see a computer that doesn't work, I can usually tell you in 10 minutes what's wrong with it even if I can't necessarily fix it immediately.

52. sending broken machines to polling places, not having emergency ballots = criminal
PA requires emergency paper ballots. There werent' any in Obama favored polling places.

People were turned away from the polls - that should never happen.

This could have been prevented by the counties obeying the SOS directive to
have emergency paper ballots on hand as many states do,
and also by supplying WORKING machines and plenty of them to the
polling places.

This is a typical Ken Blackwell strategy of sending plenty of machines to
certain polling places, and few but broken machines to select polling places.

Believe what you want, if that fits your special version of reality.

Its real. It happened. Of course a Rendell controlled SOS and media isn't going
to tell the truth.

We find that all the time with e-voting fraud. All the time.

Indiana is next, it will be even worse than PA.

They peeled 1 million voters off the rolls since Nov 2007.

Properly built computer systems don't malfunction.

Crappy software malfunctions, bad procedures malfunction, lack of planning malfunctions.

Computer systems don't.

I have a computer system that I work on every day that has not crashed, or needed a reboot, in 9 years. When computing is set up by people who know what they're doing, and how to do it, computers simply do not malfunction.

"Oops, we lost track of all the planes and then they started hitting each other": What you'd hear if the FAA system could be forgiven "malfunction".
"So sorry, we just killed all the patients on the second floor": What you'd hear if a pharmacy system could be forgiven "malfunction".
"Oops, we just nuked russia": What you'd hear if the DoD launch systems could be forgiven "malfunction".
"Oops, the stock market just crashed": What you'd hear if the NYSE/NASDAQ systems could be forgiven "malfunction".

The only way this kind of thing happens is either incompetence, or malevolence. I'd tend to the former, simply because most folks know next to nothing about computers.

Sorry if this comes across as angry, I'm a bit sick and tired of people excusing shoddy workmanship and crappy planning, and then blaming it on something they don't understand in the slightest.

And you argument that there is so long between elections is rather bad.

They have YEARS to perform extensive testing - planned and monkey - and given that we are talking elections, I would HOPE that such was performed. But obviously isn't. Or if it is - something else is up.

People here are right. There is no valid reason that a machine, especially one performing something as simple but vitally important as this, should malfunction such frequency. 6 in the same place is out of the question.

146. Nothing beats real world testing
There are always plenty of bug reports when programs actually get used by the public that extensive beta testing does not uncover. Extensive testing isn't performed because the machine companies have elections boards by the short hairs. The latter never, ever act like normal businesses and demand equipment that meets certain specifications--they take whatever crap is offered for sale. Diebold also makes ATMs, and their banking customers would never tolerat the sloppiness imposed on elections departments. And if Diebold ever dared to say that they, and not their bank customers, owned the bank's financial data, how do you suppose the banks would react?

Why? Because the last image given there, implied as evidence of no problems at Hilary's strongholds, is NOT at one of Hilary's strong holds. In fact...it's almost (at least) a year old, which tells me, this entire article is dishonest (at best).

Clinton won PA fair and square. You should just get over it. As I said downthread, it's not fraud every time Obama doesn't win.

And you'd do best to calm down before putting anything more in print. This sentence for example does not make any sense:

No, we don't. I just love how these low count posters come in and presume to speak in such presumptive terms.

There are certainly some very suspicious things going on, and that they happen to go on in Obama districts is quite disturbing. The correlation is there, no doubt, and it deserves to be investigated. Frankly, given 2000 any real Democrat would be wanting to do their best to eliminate such possible voting fraud, no matter who it favored. But apparently there's a momentary shortage of real Democrats around here.

Would be concerned about any sort of voting irregularities. Instead, you come back with that classic line you nicked from Rush, Rove, and even lately Scalia, "just get over it" Sure you're a "real Democrat" :eyes:

Tell us then, "real Democrat" what are your creds? What campaigns have you worked on, how long have you been in the party, etc. etc. I'm willing to stack my thirty five years of Democratic activism up against your sorry ass any day of the week.

As far as being elitist, I'm not thumbing my nose at low count posters, I'm questioning the legitimacy of a poster who happens to not to not only have a low post, but who's also coming across like a right wing asshole, especially with the comment "just get over it"

In other words, it isn't your post count that I find offensive, it's your assholish, RW remarks that I find both offensive and questionable. Got the picture now?

127. Thirtyfive years, and now you're turning on your own party screaming FRAUD,
just because your guy happened to lose in what's tantamount to a blowout in my state. Yeah, you SHOULD get over it.

Also, way to try to use the phrase "real Democrat" against me when YOU were the one who brought it up. No, I can't match your experience, I've only been in the party since the first time I was eligible to vote; in '88, for Dukakis. I've voted strictly Democratic all the way down the ticket in every election since then, and my parents since LBJ. But I guess I'll have to excuse my being born later than you in addition to finding DU later.

I'll ask again since you didn't bother to answer: Who are responsible for this alleged fraud pray tell? Was it just Rendell? Did Dean silently acquiesce, or did he maybe even mastermind it? Maybe we got together among the PA Democrats and drank blood from skulls and thought up a devious plan on how to do it?? C'mon, here's your chance now after 35 years to call out your fellow Democrats, right in the middle of a heated primary, and with the GOP almost wetting themselves at the thought of you giving them election fraud fodder!

Here's another assholish, RW remark for you since we're on the subject: Bring it on!

72. Oh my God....
Anyone taking this at face value needs a healthy dose of reality.

First of all, the quality of this report is rendered suspect in the first (non)sentence:

"If you were planning to vote yesterday in the Pennsylvania primary you had another thing coming as reports of voting machine problems in all of Obama's stronghold precincts."

Yeah...read that again and notice it's missing something. Opening sentence. Lots of typos in this article too.

"Six of ten machines were down at a busy Delaware County polling site. It took 103 people 8 hours to vote in Upper Darby, which is heavily populated by immigrant and first time voters. Many of those freshly-minted voters had difficulties using the six machines that still functioned. "Hell of a day for six of the machines to go down," said one poll worker."

So six of ten were down....but six still functioned? Neat.

"A technician was dispatched to each location and helped to properly set up the machines, upon further inspection machines had been manipulated and set with 500 to 1500 votes calibrated to Clinton."

So rather than turning the machines overs to authorities or at least getting proof of this, they just reset them and walked away?

"HILLARY CLINTON'S STRONGHOLD AND POLLING STATIONS HAD NOT ONE PROBLEM *Below*"

For proof of this they offer TWO pictures, neither of which seems to have any evidence as to when/where they were taken.

99. As far as I'm concerned Hillary and Bill have not acted like Democrats lately
Are you so sure that they would not try to bloody Obama now even if they realize Hill probably won't get the nomination? Are they not setting up a situation where they want McCain to win the GE and come back in 4 years? Hill and Bill crave power and they and their lackeys would do anything to help them get it. I used to support them in the 90's but I and many others have woken up to their Rethug-like ways in this primary. And one more thing: voting machines are so easily manipulated. Anyone can do it, Rethug or Democrat. The Dems were on the losing side of manipulating them so far but what is to say a corrupt Dem wouldn't take advantage of the situation against another Dem? That is naive thinking.

own primary elections. I don't think problems with voting systems can be fixed by the National Party or the Federal Government. I think that people have to make their State Government responsible for the way they run their elections, and count their votes.

151. The article doesn't mention the DNC at all
Nor have any of of the posters other than to ask where the DNC is.

So stop trying to spin the responses on this thread into something they are not. Strawmen fall down quickly around here.

93. Notice how Hillary's "comebacks" occur in "firewall states"
that rely heavily on electronic voting machines. Thanks for illustrating with pictures. Obama desperately needs to address this problem but can't focus on it as long as Pastorella is still doing her elephant dance, another reason no doubt the RNC is propping her up.

103. Oh just because ....
In New Hampshire the machines went to Hillary and the paper vote went to
Barack ... but don't worry they had to stop the recount because "they" lost
the memory cards to the Diebold machines.

Or in Harlem they had precincts that didn't record 1 vote for Obama

Or the funny way all the indie vote in California got nulled out because
of "double bubble" on the ballot

Or in Ohio (Warren County) where 12,000 reg. dems produced 27,000 dem
votes.

Or in New Mexico ........

Anybody who can't see what is going on is blind. Obama has to win by more than
12 points in the fall to get the White House.

Obama is going to need Don King, that boxing promotor with the "electrified" haircut, arranging the bout. He'd be up against it - even with his alleged connections!

efforts were made to address the issue - and a court ruled against the voters.

132. Please. Get it right. The text contains the story:
A hungry fox noticed a juicy bunch of grapes growing high on a grapevine. He leaped. He snapped. Drooling, he jumped to reach them, but try as he might, he could not obtain the tasty prize.

Disappointed by the fruitless efforts he'd made to get the grapes that day, he said, with a shrug, to comfort himself, "Oh, they were probably sour anyway!"

Not one person here is claiming "sour grapes."

134. How can Hillary live with that? If she were so unworldly as not to know
Edited on Sun Apr-27-08 02:09 PM by KCabotDullesMarxIII
it would happen, as it was proved to have happened to Edwards and others, she must know now.

I felt sure Bill Clinton's face would one day feature on Mount Rushmore, albeit for fighting a seemingly impossible rearguard action; not for economic gains for the large majority of Americans, suffering under the brutal cosh of the corporatist political establishment. Any expectation of that extraordinary distinction now seems highly improbable. They, the Republicans, won in the end. Impossible as it had always seemed.

156. Please. PM me if anyone has hard evidence of fraud, tampering, or plain breakdown in PA...
...my group VotePA is working hard to track these things, so we can change them. We are doing our best, but we need help and support.

We need confirmed reports, precinct numbers, names, voter and / or pollworker names (if available) etc. Hard facts that we can track down and use. We need reports of any kind of problem -- machine failure, long lines, deceptive practices, registration problems, etc.

Also if anyone is in PA and had actual trouble voting this past week, PLEASE FILE A FORMAL HAVA COMPLAINT. We are told time and time again by the SOS that there has never been a HAVA complaint filed. Complaint info and forms here: http://www.hava.state.pa.us/hava/cwp/view.asp?a=1186&q=... |

We need all the help we can get in PA.

PLEASE HELP US, because come November 5 everyone may become a Pennsylvanian. That is to say that a faulty result in Pennsylvania may cancel the result of YOUR vote for President no matter where you live. PA is well on track to become the next Ohio or Florida. It only takes a few precincts.
