Olbermann's guest: "Barbara Bush once called Hillary a bitch". But that never happened
Edited on Sat Apr-26-08 07:16 AM by doggycat
Keith Olbermann and his buddy the comedian Paul Mecurio were looking for an excuse to call Hillary a witch.

So what do they do? Pretend that once Barbara Bush called he a witch.
That is, of course, false. What Barbara Bush said in his autobiography was that Geraldine Ferraro was something that rimes with "witch". In other words, Bush called Ferraro a bitch, not Clinton. You can google all you want.
But does it matter? Not to Olbermann, who simply played along:

OLBERMANN: Let‘s get at this from one particular angle. If that was not a plant by the company and the campaign did not plan that, doesn‘t it make the campaign look kind of dopey? Didn‘t they need somebody to look at the video before the senator spoke and say, move those three guys out of there?

MECURIO: Absolutely, but I don‘t believe the campaign. I think it was a plant. Remember when Barbara Bush says Hillary rhymes with witch? Well, Obama is sending a message to the world that she rhymes with Fitch. It is very clear that this was a plan to me. Either that or these three guys called and said, what are you wearing tonight? I‘m wearing my A & F shirt. What are you wearing tonight?

And you can‘t move these guys out. If you move these three out, there will be three guys behind them with K-Mart shirts, then two guys behind them with Home Depot shirts, and then you move those guys out and there‘s one guy with a Pep Boy hat. That‘s not good for anybody.

OLBERMANN: You‘re saying it was to get everybody to think that Hillary Clinton is rich.

MECURIO: Yes, that was the word.

There is nothing as corny as a comedian who makes things up in order to make his punch line work.
And nothing as pathetic as a TV Show host that does not challenge his guests' fabrications.

Shame on sexist Olbermann and Mecurio.

1. No, that was HIllary
I read the book and it is one of the most vivid things I remember, that she called Hillary a bitch and then lied about it. I was quite shocked at the time, but not anymore.

Read this New York Times article from 1994:

Mrs. Bush also acknowledges a few political warts of her own. She expresses regret over a famous statement, made in the 1984 Presidential campaign, in which she likened the Democratic Vice Presidential candidate, Geraldine A. Ferraro, to a word that "rhymes with rich." The statement caused a brief flap and led Mrs. Bush to say later that the word she had in mind was "witch."

7. Well she did it to Hillary too then
Because I specifically remember this being about Hillary, that she was heard to have called her a bitch and she said no, she had said witch.

2. Paul Mecurio is one of the co-creators of The Daily Show...
...and is one of the writers. He also warms up the crowd at the tapings.

Are blanket charges of sexism all you Clinton operatives have left? Sad...

4. Mecurio is mis-remembering
I think it was Newt Gingrich's mum who said that, not President Bush's.

6. Actually is was 1988, and about Ferraro--

(What can I say, I Google'd it all I wanted?)

However, I'm pretty sure on the internets and elsewhere, it's been used on Hillary by people who rhyme with "hexists" and "Borons." So it's something "misremembered" after being repeated wrongly by others. But that really doesn't say much. Privately, Barbara Bush might've thought that about Hillary, too. (Barbara Bush--not always a nice person.)

8. "Barbara Bush said in HIS autobiography"
I know the old bird looks like the Quaker Oats Guy, but I think it's a her.

Is the Clinton Campaign outsourcing it's blog-bot operation to TATA now?
