It's Over. Barack Obama is the Democratic Nominee
The following is from this thread, the day after Clinton met with superdelegates in D.C. This is their response to whatever she had to say:

Hillary Rodham Clinton is such a polarizing figure that everyone who ever considered voting Republican in November, and even many who never did, will go to the polls to vote against her, thus jeopardizing Democrats down the ticket – i.e., themselves, or, for party leaders, the sizeable majorities they hope to gain in the House and the Senate in November.

(from this thread- thx AZblue-)
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=5684770&mesg_id=5684770

The superdelegates recognize that her negatives are so high that she could cost others their campaigns. Above all else, politicians are about their own political survival, and party survival.

For those who are Clinton supporters- I understand your disappointment. I'm sorry, for your sakes, that your candidate will not be the democratic candidate. For all the arguing here, however, the ultimate issue is democratic power in all three branches of power. Since the superdelegates are saying that she jeapordizes this, there is simply no way that she will be the nominee.

Clinton is fortunate to have so many loyal and dedicated followers. I hope she will now work to bring the party, and especially her supporters, to the point at which we can focus on raising money and issues to defeat McCain.

9. I'm talking about the real world.
as long as Clinton stays in the race, Obama has to spend money to counter her campaign. No matter who knows it's over, it's not over if he has to continue to focus on her campaign attacks.

I have a hell of a lot MORE issues and opposition to BO on specific issues, his lack of accomplishment, his incompetence in managing what he has already been given to manage and his continual contradictions in what he says. Remember, I said MOST politicians are frauds. Peace.

14. Dear Superdelegates,
You are Superidiots ... let the devoted American voter VOTE!!! Harry Reid, shut your yap and stop threatening to force the "supers" to endorse soon. You didn't have the balls to stop the funding of this illegal war, and, Fancy Nancy Pelosi, attend another fund-raiser for yourself ... don't ever pay attention to the likes of Veterans like John Murtha.

26. you are missing the point
the race is over because Hillary has no coat tails. She has "negative" coat tails, and this reason alone makes it impossible for her to be the candidate.

And he will have them in even the worst of the worst case scenarios.

TRhis was true after WI, and reinforced every contest thereafter.

27. How obvious
And how weird that she got this far. If she's the nominee, look for record numbers of Repukes to come out and bring their clothespins and vote for McCain. Many will stay home and let Barack have his chance, but they won't if it's Hillary.

30. again, the point is that Hillary would harm other candidates
in other races. This acknowledgment among those currently serving in the house means that she cannot get them as superdelegates. These delegates will endorse Obama... whether now or later. This knowledge makes her campaign undeniably over for all intents and purposes. The party as a whole cannot afford for her to be the nominee.

The presidency is only one part of the general election. In order to accomplish legislation, democrats want to work toward a super majority. the end result is blatant.

33. Actually, you're agreeing with me
the point is that those in the house think that Hillary would be the absolutely worst candidate to go against McCain. not only for the president, but also for all those running in house and senate campaigns.

Dean is saying that, even if Hillary claims that she has won something because of the numbers of popular votes, the superdelegates may override that argument. The popular vote is only one part of the primary. Dean was agreeing with the quote in the OP.

that's when I knew we had it in the bag.

Agreed on the SDs too. They can do what they will, but I don't think they'll do what Hillary needs them to.
