AND THEY'VE GOT SOMETHING TO SAY...
Kids back Obama in mock elections
The Barton kids are among hundreds of local school students who cast mock votes since Thursday for their favorite candidate in advance of today's primary. Many said they studied the candidates' Web sites and watched last week's Democratic debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia before voting. Obama won the Barton mock election 133 to Clinton's 93 votes, fourth-grade teacher Erin Wills said.
The results were similar to those in a mock election held last week at Robert K. Shafer Middle School in Bensalem, according to the results released Monday. The seventh- and eighth-graders were asked to pick among Obama, Clinton, John McCain, Ron Paul or Mike Huckabee.
Obama captured about 60 percent of the 253 votes cast in the mock election to Clinton's 30 percent, officials said. McCain received about 9 percent, Huckabee collected just under 1 percent of the vote and Paul received no votes in the mock election, officials said.
Mock elections serve a couple purposes, said Wills, the Barton event coordinator. First, the kids encourage their parents to vote during the real election. In addition, they get a feel for what to expect once they are old enough to vote, she said.
