State Sees Surprising Number Of New Democrats
Party Officials Register Biggest Number Of Democrats Ever

POSTED: 8:42 PM MST December 30, 2003
UPDATED: 8:57 PM MST December 30, 2003

The deadline has come and gone -- if you haven't yet registered as a Democrat, you won't be voting as one in the state's presidential caucus. Most political eyes will be on New Mexico in early February, when the state holds its Democratic presidential caucus. Tuesday was the deadline to register to vote.

In Bernalillo County, 620 people signed up in November. This month, 900 registered to vote Democratic. The deadline to register as a Democrat in New Mexico ran out at 5 p.m. Tuesday, and party officials say they're feeling lucky.

They've registered the largest number of Democrats ever. "I've been a Republican all my life, but I am so disgusted with George Bush and the Republican Party that I need to do something about it," said voter Bill Reuler. So he's now a Democrat, and so are more than 1,000 others across Bernalillo County.

"There are a lot of people calling in to change (parties) but the number of calls from Republicans who want to register as Democrats is somewhat surprising," said Brian Monaghan, New Mexico Democratic Party Executive Director.

Here comes the crossover vote as people start to pay attention!

2. It is happening everywhere, another one of my husband's repuke co-workers
said today that she hates everything that Bu$h is doing to this country. She said that she is so desperate to get him out of office that she will vote for whoever the Democrat is. I live in Mississippi and MOST of the freepers I know have bailed. If it happening here in MS of all places the rest of the country must be a democrat haven. The democrat whoever he/she is will win in a landslide.

I can't wait for the Dixie Chicks to play the inauguration. "Landslide" will be dedicated to Bu$h!

3. Agreed
I am seeing it all over as well

I know before i hurt a knee and was going to meet ups, we had way too many Repukes come in and ask about Dean, and this was oh... over six months ago

4. It's also the young people, the Millennials, registering for the first
time. 18-22 year-olds will go overwhelmingly for the Democrats, especially if its Dean. This is just the start. New Mexico must have a ton of Millennials and Dean will take NM with many more votes than Gore did as the Greens won't be voting Nader this time and that's what made it so close in the first place.

Then add the Repub crossover vote and voila!

6. May be wolves in sheep's clothing...as per an article I posted a few days
Edited on Sat Jan-03-04 12:57 AM by Gloria
ago...about the potential for GOP & Green voters to switch parties, vote Dean in the primary, then have plenty of time to switch back to the GOP and vote for Bush in the general.

There is no link to the article that appeared 12/24 in the Las Cruces Sun-News. Article by columnist Jay Miller

Relevant excerpts:

"Greens wanted for Stop Dean Movement"

Not so fast, some of Howard Dean's opponents are saying , you don't have New Mexico wrapped up yet. A Stop Dean movement appears to be afoot in New Mexico.

It began to emerge with word that candidate Dennis Kucinich is making an effort to enlist the 11,000 Greens in the state to switch parties so they can vote for him...David Bacon, the 2002 Green gubernatorial candidate, already has made the switch and is heading the New Mexico Kucinich campaign.....

But the idea of getting to vote twice is enticing. Now that the idea has been broached, there is nothing to stop Republicans from doing it too. White House strategists say they would rather face Dean than any other candidate because he would be easier to beat. So switching parties to vote for Dean could make sense.

More

Not to mention all the Repub sites soliciting donations for Dean....

Don't understimate the Repub operatives and others at work....

11. Actually, there really are a lot of Republicans who actually like Dean
and who will vote for him over Bush. I know a lot of them personally. In fact, one of the elected Democrats in NH who endorsed Kerry is the father of a Republican who works for the same company I do. He met Dean and genuinely likes him a lot and he's disgusted with Bush. This is someone I worked with and he sincerely likes Dean. There are a bunch at the meetups here too. They're out there busting their hump working hard to get Dean elected.

Yeah, there are a few very foolish freepers who just bought into the media farce that Dean is an ultra liberal and who might actually vote for him because they think he'll be easy to beat. But the irony of that is that they'll just be contributing to their own demise because Dean has plenty of REAL supporters outside the Democratic party that there's no way he can lose.

12. That's right there may be a few to vote and then go back but most
are truly disgusted and will remain Democrats for the REST OF THEIR LIVES. The Repubs for Dean are actually going to work for him right up to Election Day in November.

NEED A BUSHECTOMY? CALL DR. DEAN!

This sounds fishy.

9. It's Dean Republicans
And Clark Republicans.

We're appealing to a broader audience ala the age old "Reagan Democrats".

Go with it, man. This is where the future lies. We could see Chaffee and Snowe switch parties in 2005 like Ben Knighthorse Campbell did in the eighties!

The pendulum is swinging back because people are getting wise to the idiot son of an asshole.

8. In my opinion
I would be wary. They could register as Dem to vote in the primaries and then vote otherwise in the regular election. I also bet Greens are wanting to vote for Kucinich but if he doesn't win they won't vote for the Dem. It's just a hunch. Let's not count our chickens before they hatch.

13. NM Greens are flocking to register Democratic because there IS
Edited on Sat Jan-03-04 01:12 PM by revcarol
a candidate who actually makes SENSE to them, Dennis Kucinich!!

They love his plan for media reform!!

They love that he will have us withdraw from NAFTA and the WTO with a stroke of the pen, to replace them with common sense bilateral trade agreements that benefit both countries!

They love it that he will repeal the ENTIRE PATRIOT ACT, and give us our civil rights back!!

They love it that he actually marches with AFSCME, SEIU, dockworkers grocery workers and is PRO-LABOR GETTING A FAIR SHAKE.

Greens, not repugs, are by far the largest group switching to Dem, because they FINALLY have a Dem candidate worth voting for.
