Gallup Daily: Clinton Moves Within 3 Points of Obama

Thursday night interviewing suggests Obama may have been hurt by debate

PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup Poll Daily tracking shows a tightening of the national Democratic race, with Barack Obama now holding just a 3-percentage point advantage over Hillary Clinton, 47% to 44%.

These results are based on interviewing conducted April 15-17, with Thursday night's interviewing the first conducted following the April 16 debate in Philadelphia. The initial indications are that Obama may have been hurt by the debate, which was noted for its negative tone and focus on the candidates' recent "gaffes" and Obama's associations with the controversial Rev. Jeremiah Wright and William Ayers (a former member of the radical Weather Underground group).

In Thursday night's interviewing, Clinton received a greater share of national Democratic support than Obama, the first time she has done so in an individual night's interviewing since April 3. That stronger showing for Clinton helped to snap Obama's streak of statistically significant leads in the three-day rolling averages Gallup reports each day. Until today, he had led Clinton by a statistically significant margin in each of the prior 11 Gallup releases.

The full impact of the debate -- and the ensuing media coverage of it -- will be apparent in the coming days, and it will soon be clear if the debate has produced a shift back to a more competitive race, or if Clinton may have received just a temporary boost in support. (To view the complete trend since Jan. 3, 2008, click here.) The next big event on the Democratic primary calendar is Tuesday's Pennsylvania primary.

What polls? Polls don't mean anything. I think they are just made up to sell newspapers and to give that hussy Katie Couric something to talk about.

3. bullshit
just too convenient

unless they are ONLY polling knuckledraggers who managed to stay tuned in through the whole thing thinking it was an episode of Jerry Springer, I don't believe that kind of a shift in that timeframe.

either a setup by abc and gallup, or bad polling. take your pick.

ps: note my sig before calling me hillbot

5. Too bad the next contest is in PA:
Rasmussen: Pennsylvania Primary Tightening

Hillary 47% (50%)
Obama 44% (41%)

One interesting tidbit from the poll: A surprising 12% say something they saw in the debate caused them to change their mind about how they're voting. This is a bit of a murky stat, but taken with the tightening of the race it could be a sign that the debate may have played against Hillary.

13. april 1, april 2, april 5 -- HRC closed within 3 on those days too.
But she hasn't been able to get any closer and then falls back. As the poll analysis itself suggests, this could be more of the same.

20. What I find amazing, in places such as Mass & Kentucky Clinton pulls more black voters than Obama
In Massachusetts vs. McCain, Hillary receives 59% while Obama receives 49%
http://www.surveyusa.com/client/PollReport.aspx?g=d328d259-7c45-49ff-a14e-c14c182cb9c7

In Kentucky vs. McCain, Hillary receives 80% while Obama receives 72%

Also: in Massachusetts McCain polls more of the Black voters than Obama. This is not good at all. Do you think the good folks in Massachusetts know far more about Obama than say South Carolina?

24. yeah, Rove is a full time Newsweek employee..
we've said it before and I'll say it again. The Republicans WANT Obama as the nominee to have the pleasure of destroying him.

He barely survived the abc debate. The Repubs are planning to crucify him in the general calling him unpatriotic, a Muslim, and a Hater of this country.. these memes he will not survive. If they do nothing else, they will be enough to cast reasonable doubt on his authenticity. People, by and large, will go with what they know. It will be McCain.

I have no interest in Obama as the nominee.

26. You heard that McCain told his campaign to lay off Hillary . . . right?
He wants to run against her because he thinks she's a sure thing to beat. After she trashed Obama supporters today, I'd have to agree with him. It's one thing to go after your opponent, but if you might need his supporters down the road you try to pretend you're not pissed at them.

31. Gee. Here she is closing to within 3 points, and she said it would
be over Feb 5th. You almost have to admire the rose colored glasses the HRC faithful must be wearing. So what will they be saying in November as they go to the polls for BHO - "She was within 3 points several times." Or, "She was ahead before she was behind."
