Screw-em-gate is starting to get legs as a story
Clinton campaign is having to answer questions about it. :woohoo:

~snip~

"On a Clinton campaign conference call this morning, Hillary's advisers were asked directly what their basis is for denying outright that she said "screw 'em" about white working class southerners in a meeting in 1995, as author Benjamin Barber alleges."

1. I sure hope so
It seems like kind of a hit job, taking something she said privately out of context, but she did the exact same thing with Obama's comment in San Francisco, and claimed he showed contempt for small town America, so this seems like totally fair game to me.

17. It is a hit job, but it's simply adhering to the standards
that she herself has already set.

She's made it quite clear that she wants to fight this thing out in the gutter, so I guess she's getting her wish.

25. Exactly
It's beneath my principles, but if she is going to call Obama out of touch based on a distortion of something he said at a private event then she has to be held accountable.

2. Witness for the defense
Who is saying she didn't make it? Don Baer, a Clinton speechwriter at the time, and, now, Reed, who obviously isn't a neutral observer.

We'll let you know if Reed speaks out.

Late Update: Baer, it turns out, is now chairman of Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates.

64. Yes - Don Baer, President Clinton's speech writer - says no such line of conversation occurred
Don Baer, President Clinton's speech writer at the time, who had attended the same meeting. He says: "I don't remember anything along those lines, at all. And I certainly don't remember Senator Clinton saying anything like that... they have their recollections of that, that is their business. The conversation, from my perspective, was moderated in tone."

33. Watch for another ghost from her past to put in a appearance
since she brought up the Weatherman and by extension radical groups of that era.

Than she might have to explain her summer internship in the late 60's or early 70's (which she glosses over in her bio with a paragraph or so) with an uber radical law firm in San Francisco, who made it one of their major missions in life to defend any radical they could (can you remember Angela Davis for example).

Now you may or may not have a overall positive opinion of the Ayers, Dorns or Davis types and their actions of almost 40 years ago, however HRC was using this situation as a way to paint Barack as an out of touch and semi elitist because she knows that most people did not see their actions in a very positive light back then, and even to this day I would wager a significant majority of the public would find them semi-un american. Which of course was her whole point.

44. The full quote.....
In January 1995, as the Clintons were licking their wounds from the 1994 congressional elections, a debate emerged at a retreat at Camp David. Should the administration make overtures to working class white southerners who had all but forsaken the Democratic Party? The then-first lady took a less than inclusive approach.

"Screw 'em," she told her husband. "You don't owe them a thing, Bill. They're doing nothing for you; you don't have to do anything for them."

The statement -- which author Benjamin Barber witnessed and wrote about in his book, "The Truth of Power: Intellectual Affairs in the Clinton White House" -- was prompted by another speaker raising the difficulties of reaching "Reagan Democrats." It stands in stark contrast to the attitude the New York Democrat has recently taken on the campaign trail, in which she has presented herself as the one candidate who understands the working-class needs.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/16/hillary-clinton-on-workin_n_97017.html

This is how the Clintons have operated for years. Anyone who thinks she's a populist is a fool.

50. Hate to say it but yes.
This race has become so damaging to democrats that McCain is making HUGE gains.

So yes if it means that Clinton is exposed and she finally exits so we can start working on the GE then that means it helps us finally get out of Iraq because it reduces the chance of McCain sneaking in while Clinton and Obama tear each other apart.

Also it tells the republicans Obama is not going to stand by while crap is thrown.

You want to stick with the issues we stick with the issues... You want to throw mud we are going to load a mud cannon.
