Obama's name in Rezko trial
FEDERAL COURT | Levine says senator attended bash for Iraqi crook

Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama was again drawn into Tony Rezko's corruption trial on Monday, when the prosecution's star witness placed Obama at a party for an Iraqi-born billionaire who was later barred entry to the United States.

Stuart Levine testified under cross-examination that Obama and his wife, Michelle, attended the April 3, 2004, reception for Nadhmi Auchi.

Auchi -- who lives in London -- had been convicted of fraud in France in 2003. After visiting Chicago and Detroit in 2004, he wasn't allowed back into this country in 2005, according to a prosecution filing in the Rezko case.

The April 3, 2004, gathering for Auchi took place at Rezko's mansion in Wilmette, with about 100 people attending, Levine testified.

"Mr. and Mrs. Obama were there, were they not?" Rezko's lawyer, Joseph Duffy, asked.

"Yes, sir," Levine said.

Later Monday, Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt said: "As he has said previously, Senator Obama does not recall meeting Nadhmi Auchi at any time or on any occasion, and this includes any event that may have been held for Mr. Auchi. Senator and Mrs. Obama have no recollection of attending any such event."

But according to two sources familiar with the gathering, the Obamas attended the Wilmette reception, which came less than a month after Obama's Democratic primary win for his U.S. Senate seat. Rezko had been a key fund-raiser for Obama, who has since given to charity nearly $160,000 in Rezko-linked contributions.

Levine testified he was invited to the reception after meeting with Rezko and his family days earlier, during a spring vacation in Puerto Vallarta.

Auchi couldn't be reached Monday. His lawyer, Alasdair Pepper, told the Sun-Times in February his client "has no recollection of meeting Senator Obama." Auchi is appealing his French conviction. His 15-month sentence is suspended as long as he commits no new crimes. He is not accused of wrongdoing involving Rezko.

Obama is not accused of any wrong doing. But his relationship with Rezko -- who is accused of demanding kickbacks from people seeking Illinois government business -- is under a microscope as he seeks the presidency. Obama particularly has drawn fire for buying property from Rezko's wife -- a strip of land adjacent to Obama's Kenwood home -- at a time Rezko was already known to be under federal investigation.

Levine testified Rezko had to leave Mexico early to host Auchi. So Levine chartered a private jet to fly Rezko's wife and children -- as well as his own family -- back to Chicago on April 3, 2004.

That night, Levine testified, he attended the reception, which was arranged to interest Auchi in investing in Illinois.

Gov. Blagojevich hosted a separate dinner party for Auchi two days earlier, at the Four Seasons hotel in downtown Chicago, the Sun-Times has reported.

Auchi was named by prosecutors in the January court filing that led to Rezko's bail being revoked and his being jailed. Last April, an Auchi company wired Rezko $3.5 million in connection with a valuable 62-acre South Loop site, which Rezko didn't disclose to authorities. Auchi's General Mediterranean Holding now controls the land at Roosevelt and Clark.

Prosecutors said Rezko appealed to the State Department in November 2005 to allow Auchi to enter the United States, after Auchi was unable to do so.

The above mentioned Auchi was charged along with Saddam Hussein for conspiring to assassinate Iraqi President Abdul-Karim Qasim in 1959. Qasim was injured while his bodyguard was killed; Saddam managed to flee the country. Auchi was arrested for delivering weapons to the assassins but was later pardoned by President Qasim.

Here's some more interesting facts about Auchi's links to Chicago politics reported by the London Times.

Wow. Obama has some explaining to do. Of course I guess someone has to ask him questions about it first.

He has changed his story many times but not once has he been called on his "misspeaks."

I think he could eat live puppies from his lobbyist's mansion and you guys would find excuses for him.

34. Rezko's attorneys have already stated that they intend to call Obama as a defense witness.....
at some point. I'm not saying that Obama is necessarily guilty of any wrongdoing but once again his questionable ties shine an unflattering light on his "sound judgement" which is part of his platform as to why he's a better candidate because of his supposed "better judgement" than his opponents....which I have yet to see.

15. Non-Story Here: Obama Receives $ 3.5 Million from Iraqi Convicted of Corruption
Who is Nadhmi Auchi ?

And Why is He Loaning Obama's Campaign $ 3.5 million ????

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article3433485.ece

Mansion 'mistake' piles the pressure on Barack Obama

A British-Iraqi billionaire lent millions of dollars to Barack Obama's fundraiser just weeks before an imprudent land deal that has returned to haunt the presidential contender, an investigation by The Times discloses.

The money transfer raises the question of whether funds from Nadhmi Auchi, one of Britain’s wealthiest men, helped Mr Obama buy his mock Georgian mansion in Chicago.

A company related to Mr Auchi, who has a conviction for corruption in France, registered the loan to Mr Obama's bagman Antoin "Tony" Rezko on May 23 2005. Mr Auchi says the loan, through the Panamanian company Fintrade Services SA, was for $3.5 million.

Three weeks later, Mr Obama bought a house on the city's South Side while Mr Rezko's wife bought the garden plot next door from the same seller on the same day, June 15.

Mr Obama says he never used Mrs Rezko's still-empty lot, which could only be accessed through his property. But he admits he paid his gardener to mow the lawn.

Mrs Rezko, whose husband was widely known to be under investigation at the time, went on to sell a 10-foot strip of her property to Mr Obama seven months later so he could enjoy a bigger garden.

Mr Obama now admits his involvement in this land deal was a “boneheaded mistake”.

Mrs Rezko’s purchase and sale of the land to Mr Obama raises many unanswered questions.

It is unclear how Mrs Rezko could have afforded the downpayment of $125,000 and a $500,000 mortgage for the original $625,000 purchase of the garden plot at 5050 South Greenwood Ave.

In a sworn statement a year later, Mrs Rezko said she got by on a salary of $37,000 and had $35,000 assets. Mr Rezko told a court he had "no income, negative cash flow, no liquid assets, no unencumbered assets is significantly in arrears on many of his obligations."

Mrs Rezko, whose husband goes on trial on unrelated corruption charges in Chicago on March 3, refused to answer questions about the case when she spoke by telephone to The Times.

Asked if she used money from her husband to buy the land next to Mr Obama's house, she said: "I can't answer these questions, I'm sorry."

Asked how long she and her husband had known Mr Auchi, she replied: "I will not be able to answer this question."

Mr Auchi's lawyer, asked whether the Fintrade Services loan was used to buy the land which became Mr Obama's garden, stated: "No, not as far as my client is aware."

Mr Auchi's links with Mr Rezko are a new political headache for Mr Obama, the charismatic Illinois senator vying to become America’s first African-American president.

32. He keeps getting busted. This has become a pattern for him....
denying friendship with Rezko, denying Nafta/Goolsbee meeting, not hearing Wright's inflammatory speeches, denying having met Auchi, etc. There's more to the Auchi Obama Rezko connection. First Obama hardly knew Rezko....he only did 5 hours of work for him through his firm then the week of the Wright flap he finally confesses Rezko has been a friend and fundraiser for 17 years and he DID receive a lot more in donations from Rezko than he previously admitted to.

If Hillary or any other candidate was linked to this story Obama supporters and the MSM would be all over this story but since it's "The One" you simply can't find any fault in him. I'm wondering how long before Rezko makes a deal with prosecutors and starts singing.

if you read the dailies you`ll know the feds main witness has some really big credibility issues. there could be a good chance the jury is`t going to buy the witness story. i`m not saying rezko is not dirty it`s just sometimes the "state" fails to prove it`s case...all it takes is one juror.

37. For a candidate who proclaims himself to be the champion of transparency, .....
he sure has been far less than forthcoming about his relationship with Rezko.

One minute they're barely acquaintances, the next minute they're close friends.

One minute he's only accepted $125,000 in donations from Rezko, the next minute it's $250,000--- TWICE the original number.

Obama lacks any credibility whatsoever.

So in the meantime, how does one explain receiving $ 3.5 million from an Iraqi convicted of corruption?

Well, when the person that gave the $ 3.5 million to Obama is a star witness in a trial involving Obama's largest campaign contributor - who has been indicted for Extortion involving government contracts, I guess it would make sense for Obama to send his personal lawyer to the trial.

Even though - ahem - Obama - ahem - isn't connected - ahem - (cough..bullshit..cough).
