I think Obama's "bitter" comments hurt him with people who are
not inclined to vote for him anyway. The gun toting, immigrant hating folks. But the part about clinging to religion may have hurt him with folks who find solace in their faith when everything else is going wrong in their lives. I spoke to a man today who had just lost his brother in a terrible accident...he told me that it was OK because his brother was in a better place and was "good with God". Now, I can't fathom that attitude but I respect it because this is obviously the way this man copes with loss. I think these are the people who will have difficulty understanding what Obama was trying to get at.

Just some thoughts I had while driving home tonight.

1. I think you are right.
But as you can see, this is a double edged sword for him. The rethugs are using it and as you can see, it is not playing well on here. Half the post on here about the statement.

But I don't think people on the fence are swayed.

2. OTOH, it sounds like that man was clinging to his faith for comfort.
There's nothing wrong with that. As has been pointed out, the pundits are blowing this way out of proportion, and Clinton is contributing to the feeding frenzy. It's another one of their molehill moments...

4. Isn't that what faith is mostly about? Comfort, explaining the things that
can't be explained? I don't know since the Catholic Church about stamped any faith I had out of me, but that is what I observe. Obama may have to address that specific thing.

5. He wasn't demeaning faith -- far from it -- he was criticizing D.C.
When Hurricane Katrina occurred, people shouldn't have had to PRAY for
help -- their government should have been there to help as well. It's
fine to pray for spiritual sustenance, but people who are poor shouldn't
have ONLY PRAYER to keep them from being hungry; we as a society need
to do better so that people can have hope in ONE ANOTHER ALSO. This
all stems from the Rethug "go-it-alone" attitude -- if you can't make
it, you'd better pray because no one else is going to help you.

9. Hmmm... do you think that maybe the fact that self-styled progressives
casually refer to people as "rednecks" might explain why those "rednecks" think that most progressives look down on them?

It's just a thought....

12. I think the reason why self-styled...
progressives look down on rednecks is because they choose to vote on wedge issues, such as God, Guns, Gays and Immigrants. The problem as I see it is, there has been a lack of information about anything else concerning our political reality. These 'manufactured outrages' have served a useful purpose in bringing some of that social discontent that divides us to the surface. Fear and hate will not be overcome when the reasons for those feelings never see the light of day.

10. Ethnocentric, Theocentric, Disenfranchised, Betrayed by DC, Siege Mentality
Economically STRAPPED.... people...

Obama's statements were an effort to teach people, going out into the world to campaign for him, to help them understand and have empathy for the people they will be talking to.

yet another, "I like Obama BUT" posts

get off it... pretenses to cool objectivity notwithstanding

he was dead on the money... it just wasn't as carefully couched or nuanced as his usual public statements...

The only thing wrong here is going to be the

24/7 Swift Boating of the Last Democrat Standing by the War Profiteers and Energy Transnationals that OWN THE MSM, and BACK HILLARY CLINTON

thanks for co-signing and repeating this BULLSHIT MEME

did you even WATCH the "Compassion" discussion?

whatever you do, don't let the facts effect your judgement
