People in my home state much prefer Hillary. If it is Obama v. McCain, they will not vote.

Just telling you what I am hearing.

So now the Hillary meme is you are unAmerican if you vote for Obama?
another insult sure to win her over even more new friends.

This is Hillaryious.

THe American Public has been burned so badly by those like Hillary that
they aren't going to settle for platitudes and patting on the head any more.

There's nothing more unAmerican than passing NAFTA, having an advisor and
a husband who are lobbying for the Columbian Free Trade agreement.

And you can' get much more out of touch then to have #109 million and then say
you haven't seen the bitterness anywhere.

Thats an insult to the many of us who are bitter over our governments betrayal of
us to their cronies, rich friends and special interests.

And don't presume to tell us what "Americans" will or will not do because WE have just as much or more insight about that than you do.

155. I'm hearing that your state is going red once again..........
no matter who the Democratic nominee is. Hillary is going to get between 47-49% of the general election vote if she is the nominee. Whether this will be enough to win is hard to say. Obama has a lower floor and a higher ceiling than Hillary. That is to say he could go below 47% or go above 49%. In my view he offers us our best chance because he offers us the clearest contrast in a campaign against McCain. Furthermore, while the word "change" has been effectively used by the Obama campaign and has become somewhat of a buzzword, after eight years of misery under Bush, most Americans are ready for something different, and only one candidate out of the three that remain offers that.

Rally backs Obama for White House

Scottish supporters of US presidential hopeful Barack Obama are staging a rally.

Members of the Scotland for Obama campaign are holding the event in Edinburgh to show their backing for the politician, who is fighting Hillary Clinton to win the Democratic nomination in the race for the White House.

John Loughton, the chair of the Scottish Youth Parliament who earlier this year won the reality television show Big Brother Celebrity Hijack, is supporting the Illinois Senator.

153. It sounds like a throwing down of the gauntlet to me and it's
pissing me off. I donated to, worked for and voted for many dems who I didn't like based on positions, in other words, the damned DINOs who get selected from on high and then rammed down our throats.

I've voted for the ones in my district and donated money to others across this state just to try to turn things around in this state in small steps.

Wasn't it Bill Clinton who stated 'fall in love in the primary, then you fall in line for the general'? Well, I've done it more times than I care to remember, but you fall in line and vote for the eventual nominee. It may cause you to wake up in a cold sweat a few days prior to election day, it may give you nightmares, it may cause you to damned near vomit in the voting booth, but you do it. I couldn't stand Ford, Jr., but I attended events when he was here and worked my ass off trying to get him elected and there have been soooo many others.

If this means as Democrats in this state we are no longer expected to fall in line behind our eventual nominees, as you seem to be suggesting, could I please get a copy of the memo because I've been unhappy with many choices for many years and it might be a relief to know that I won't be expected to be supportive anymore.

Don't worry ma'am, no one knows who you vote for in the privacy of the voting booth. You can lie about supporting the democratic nominee to your republican friends and family if you have to.

:sarcasm:

I will vote for the democratic nominee. Even if I have to take a clothespin to the booth.

41. I think Americans will not vote for McCain...The citizens have
seen enough of the GOP to last generations. Americans are smarter than tossing more logs under the kettle they're in raise the temp higher. In all seriousness, I can't see McCain getting much more than 35-37% of the popular vote...and that's at this point...wait until he goes off on his tirades during the run up to the GE...he is nothing more than bush in and old man's body.

So the "many many people" you've heard this from? Could I get a very specific conversation you've had with one or two of them?

You know... like Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon... you could tell me tales of the "Welfare Queen" and the great "Silent Majority."

Keep it folksy and earnest... I'll get some popcorn.

If it were stated as such I wouldn't have a problem but just to say you've "heard it" from many, many people without any sort of facts? Yes, I have a problem with what you are trying to say here, it's a joke. There are plenty people here who support Hillary that actually have something to back up their claims. My statement about you being a joke is just as accurate as yours is.

67. Could you describe these Americans for us a little, please?
What are their thoughts about Universal Single Payer Health Care?

What do they think about Green technologies compared to conventional fossil-fuel dependent technologies?

Do they think we did the right thing by invading Iraq? When should be leave and under what conditions?

What are their attitudes toward Prayer in Public Schools?

What do they think we should do about Roe v. Wade?

Are there any subsets of American citizens for whom Constitutionally protected Civil Rights are different?

I suppose I should stop there, don't want to be a burden, but I'd REALLY like to know if you don't mind.

Please and thank you.

110. I have deep sentiments too. For example, I'm actually an Edwards-ian Deanocrat.
My deep sentiment is that Edwards could win more easily than HC or BO. The situation is that, rationally, I must admit that my deep sentiment is ir-relevant. So I went through a few months of being 50:50 for both HC and BO and listened closely to both of them. I decided that both of them are a little tooooooo moderate for me. John Edwards is no radical, but he WAS going to bust up the MSM MONOPOLIES and that IS radical enough for me.

Anyhow, I listened to both of the carefully and came to the conclusion that whatever the "solutions" to the issues (that I listed in my previous post), whatever the solutions to the issues are, the People (as nearly ALL of the People as possible) MUST own those solutions by actively participating in the identification and implementation of those solutions. Whatever happens after the GE, it is atleast 50% about who we are and what we are doing and only 50% about the pResident.

From listening to the candidates, it seems pretty clear to me that Obama is working much more in that INCLUSIVE vein than HC is. For HC it's all about the past; it's all about the DLC and Bill and if you're not part of that or don't identify with them, then that's your problem. I've been very neutral about HC for quite a while, but her language, especially lately, demonstrates to me that she doesn't care if she hurts the Democratic Party or not, as long as she can damage Obama. Where I had been neutral about her in the recent past, I am now against her.

I like the fact that Obama is more open and is talking to us rather than at or about us. I like the fact that if Rev. Wright has a seat at the table, then so does his counterpart in the "White" culture. I like the fact that we are not going to pretend about who and what we are anymore and that if everyone can honestly be themselves and be civil with those with whom they differ (civil BECAUSE all of us ARE at the table), then we stand a better chance of identifying and implementing NEW solutions to old problems.

Solidarity, Tennessee Gal. :hi:

108. I'm in Nebraska, and a lot of the R's I speak to say they'll
sit this one out if McCain is their only choice. This may well be BS, but if NE doesn't like the guy, he's in serious trouble.

The main reason cited is that they figure McCain is little more than a an older bush, and even the GOP in NE has had enough. The second reason is no one has an idea of who the VP nominee would be, if it's Rice, forget it, but the GOP around here seems to think McCain would not survive 4 years, and the VP is very important in this one.

104. So is it safe to assume that whatever city you come from in TN
is demographically a perfect representation of the U. S. as a whole and it is thus accurate for you to project how a nationwide election would go based on the sentiment where you live? If not, then your post is pretty meaningless.

However, if we're just throwing out anecdotes about where we live: I'll predict that my the county where I currently live will vote for McCain by a similar margin (about 60-percent) as the margin by which it went for Bush. However, just based on what I'm hearing, Obama is *much* more popular here than Clinton. When Clinton is brought up, I have heard responses that would not be proper to post on this message board. Yeah, so I guess based on where I live, McCain is going to win the national popular vote by around 60-percent, although Obama would do better against him than Clinton. See how goofy making assumptions about national elections based on your surroundings is?

Ok, I'll be a little more blunt. there are a lot of rednecks in TN who will never vote for a black man, especially one who might be a Muslim! for President. Enough of them that Obama will never carry that state, and never even get close to carrying that state. It's too bad, but that's the way it is.

Since Obama will be the nominee it'd be a waste of time and resources for his campaign to spend one second in that state.

114. My Evangelical Southern Nephew, disgusted with Bush came over to Kerry in '04
Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 04:37 PM by KoKo01
and he even represented his Pilot's Union because he decided he had to get "involved," with workers rights as he saw the Pilots getting screwed by the Corporate Management.

My nephew is one of those who believes the Bible is the true word of God...he never could stand Democrats...because of Guns and God but he is a "good soul" who cares about the "little guy, the common person" and he saw what Bush was doing even though he supported Iraq Invasion...he started to question. I managed to send him enough "progressive thoughts" to counter the RW e-mails his Dad and the rest of his Dad's family kept sending him (you all know those conservative screeds that the RW was doing) and I gave him the link to "Snopes" so he could check out the worst of them on his own. He gradually came around and even though he didn't care for John Kerry he voted for him...because he thought a change was what we needed.

My nephew can't stand the Clintons...he would never vote for Hillary...but he will not vote for Obama, either because to him Obama is the ultimate liberal that he has a problem with. He doesn't like that Obama got to go to Harvard and Columbia. He thinks it's "weird" that he was born in Hawaii and that his mother married "that guy from Kenya" and the "guy deserts her" and her son, and his mother is left without any money to live with her family and yet the father and the son both get to go to Harvard. My nephew growing up in poor rural GA can't imagine how Obama got all those "privileges," when he didn't see anyone getting the same thing in families where the Mother married young...mixed marriage where he grew up in Georgia. He doesn't think Obama understands what it's like to be an "average American" because he's Hawaiian and Kenyan. He thinks his whole background is strange and can't identify with him...so he's voting for McCain.

I'm posting this because there are many folks all over America who grew up in rural areas who really are Dems at heart...but we didn't give them a choice this time that they could vote for.

Just saying..

Hawaii's 442nd was the most highly decorated in all of WWII. We are Americans too. Barack got those privileges because his mother believed in education, got him up before dawn to study, and he was and is brilliant.

I think that people who don't like Obama either are Republicans' 20% or don't know him. A lot of effort and money has been spent giving people false 'information' with the intended result just the one you describe.

It's up to us to learn how to talk to the other side and help them see that we have more in common than we think. Aloha.

White Americans? Black Americans? Spanish Americans? Native Americans? Jewish Americans? Indian Americans? Young Americans? Old Americans? Hawaiian Americans? Irish Americans? Polish Americans? Mexican Americans? Poor Americans? Middle class Americans? Wealthy Americans? Educated Americans? Stupid Americans? Kind Americans? Hateful Americans?

Or are they just Americans who like to wear white?

I expect Obama will get some of his worst numbers in TN, KY, WV, and AR. He more than makes up for it in other states, though.

160. you are 100% correct..
but unfortunately we are in the midst of one of those periods of mass hysteria when reality no longer matters. Work hard for a Democratic senate and congress, and hope that the conservatives are correct about McCain and that he really does have some liberal leanings. I wish I could view this as an experience that will at least make the Democrats wiser in the future, but I've lived long enough to realize that we really don't learn much of anything from our mistakes.

On our local campaigns, we've already begun exploring strategies to seperate our candidates from the top of the ticket. Find a candidate you believe in, work for that person, and don't let this Obama mess poison you against the rest of the work that can still be achieved.

Obama seems 'foreign' to them, but they feel comfortable with McCain. I'm sure it's a different world depending on your location, but he has no strong support here. I'm sure I could find some Obama voters in my area, but this is the first year I've ever seen a time when county central committees aren't behind the likely Democratic presidential candidate. The primary is not the general election. Obama will not win the general election.
