Whisky-swilling Hill a not-so-straight shooter

Clinton Becomes a Gun Lover

CNN reported Saturday that Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton touted her experience with guns and hunting to a crowd in Indiana:

Hillary Clinton appealed to Second Amendment supporters on Saturday by hinting that she has some experience of her own pulling triggers.

"I disagree with Sen. Obama's assertion that people in our country cling to guns and have certain attitudes about trade and immigration simply out of frustration," she began, referring to the Obama comments on small-town Americans that set off a political tumult on Friday.

She then introduced a fond memory from her youth.

"You know, my dad took me out behind the cottage that my grandfather built on a little lake called Lake Winola outside of Scranton and taught be how to shoot when I was a little girl," she said.

"You know, some people now continue to teach their children and their grandchildren. It's part of culture. It's part of a way of life. People enjoy hunting and shooting because it's an important part of who they are. Not because they are bitter."

Clinton said she has hunted ducks.

ABC News later reported that Clinton also visited a restaurant in Crown Point, Indiana to share a shot of whiskey with the locals:

Clinton stood by the bar and took a shot of Crown Royal whiskey. She took one sip of the shot, then another small sip, then a few seconds later threw her head back and finished off the whole thing.
Clinton later sat down at a table and enjoyed some pizza and beer, and called over Mayor Tom McDermott of Hammond, Ind., to come join the table.

"Every time I get around you we start drinking, senator," the mayor exclaimed.

Clinton nodded and raised her glass.

"It's Saturday night, though, Tom," she said.

8. Why would you say that?
If you are accusing Hillary Clinton of having a drinking problem, I think you need a bit more evidence.

If you are just joking, I think you need to work on your sense of humor.

I am a strong supporter of Obama, but I see no reason to drop nasty comments like this about Clinton. She deserves better.

I thought it was a strange thing to say about her when I read it.

It surprised me to see her at the bar taking a drink with the boys.

It was, in my view, totally out of character for her.......

ABC News later reported that Clinton also visited a restaurant in Crown Point, Indiana to share a shot of whiskey with the locals:

28. I have to say
I've taken a lot of Schadenfreude in Hillary's tone-deafness this campaign season, but I can't bring myself to do anything but shake my head at this.

I have nothing against hoisting a glass--shot, beer, or otherwise.

I have nothing against a woman doing so--in fact, I fondly recall my 80 year-old grandmother having a toast at a birthday party.

I have nothing against a presidential candidate doing it.

But, for the love of god, WHO IS HILLARY CLINTON? Will the REAL Hillary Clinton please stand up?

21. Oh wow
Get your drink on Hillary! I'm sorry but those picture looks staged and down right idiotic. So now you gotta have a few shots of whiskey and beer to prove how American you are? I thought good Christians didn't drink. So which one is it? You gotta enjoy a beer to be American or go to church to be an American? Maybe you have to do both but then again I though good Christians didn't touch the sauce. It must depend on your denomination but since I'm an agnostic I guess I'm out of the loop. Hillary should write a speech and tell us the rule of being a good American. :eyes:

If she is attempting to reach the Senior women voters ~I would be shocked if they thought this was appropriate. In our generation, this was rarely done.

51. Reminds me of a certain vodka drinking contest -
"Two summers ago, on a Congressional trip to Estonia, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton astonished her traveling companions by suggesting that the group do what one does in the Baltics: hold a vodka-drinking contest.

Delighted, the leader of the delegation, Senator John McCain, quickly agreed. The after-dinner drinks went so well — memories are a bit hazy on who drank how much — that Mr. McCain, an Arizona Republican, later told people how unexpectedly engaging he found Mrs. Clinton to be. “One of the guys” was the way he described Mrs. Clinton, a New York Democrat, to some Republican colleagues."

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/29/washington/29rivals.html?pagewanted=print

Of course, McCain denies it ever happened.

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=51439

Sen. John McCain is denying a report in the New York Times that claimed he and fellow Sen. Hillary Clinton engaged each other in a vodka-drinking contest in Estonia two years ago.

"It didn't happen," McCain said on NBC's "Tonight Show with Jay Leno." "Don't believe everything you read."

58. Political advice
How you handle this situation as a candidate. You can't refuse the drink. That would be rude. But swilling it down evokes all the criticism you see here -- even for a man. A beer, maybe. A shot and a beer - NO.

You clink glasses, take a sip -- basically put the glass to your lips -- then you say "Thanks, but I can't drink this now. I have a long day ahead of me and I need to stay focused, but I appreciate your hospitality."

That's all -- everyone's happy.

The truth is -- unless you've got a real drinking problem -- tossing down a shot and beer is going to slow you down for the rest of the day. I like my beer and I'll have a whiskey now and then, but even I wouldn't do it if I had some real work to do later. When I was working, I would never drink at lunch. It kind of turned the afternoon into a blur.
