"My campaign drives people to drink," Clinton said.

Hillary Clinton Takes a Shot of Whiskey in Northwest Indiana

April 12, 2008 9:58 PM --

ABC News' Eloise Harper reports: Sen. Hillary Clinton stopped by Bronko’s Restaurant and Lounge in Crown Point, Ind., tonight. Clinton stood by the bar and took a shot of Crown Royal whiskey. She took one sip of the shot, then another small sip, then a few seconds later threw her head back and finished off the whole thing.

Clinton later sat down at a table and enjoyed some pizza and beer, and called over Mayor Tom McDermott of Hammond, Ind., to come join the table.

"Every time I get around you we start drinking, senator," the mayor exclaimed.

Clinton nodded and raised her glass.

"It's Saturday night, though, Tom," she said.

The senator was eager to get a slice of pepperoni.

"I got one pepperoni, I think it's cheese and pepperoni," she said.

A fellow diner made a toast in Clinton’s honor and she raised her beer glass and touched the glasses of people sitting at her table. Clinton was looking for a staffer and her seat partner said, "Maybe he’s up at the bar."

"My campaign drives people to drink," Clinton said with a smile.

Then she turned to her ABC and CBS embedded campaign reporters.

"The only bad thing about this wonderful time with you is that every bite I take is recorded for posterity," she said. "These two young people are really very very nice but their job is to get something on film that looks really weird, so I try to accommodate them as much as often."

Doesn't Michelle have people checking on Barack to make sure he doesn't sneak a drag behind everyone's back? I thought that was funny when I heard that.

5. For her encore...
She played some AC/DC on the jukebox and bellowed along to "Hell's Bells", got in a fight with a guy who bumped up against her, threw up in the bathroom, peed in the alley behind the bar, and was taken into protective custody by the Hammond police.

41. I think this is bizarre and inappropriate...
A Democratic presidential candidate doing shots with the voters?

It's one thing to hang out with voters in diners, bars or restaurants. It's
another thing to wolf down shots.

It smacks of a desperate attempt to gain acceptance--by downing alcohol.

Very bizarre and unprofessional--with an ick factor.

66. Love your posts Bigtree--- But

I'm glad she had some fun, but this isn't quite what I would want my children to see. (We don't drink around them at all) For that matter, had Obama not stopped smoking I'd be just as leery of any pictures of him lighting one up.

I just don't think it, well, I don't even know how to say it- appropriate? We already had years of 'Who would you rather have a beer with' Bush. Looking at these pictures made me queasy, not because of HRC but because of the whole "Lets drink to have fun thing"

I'm sorry HRC supporters, I truly am but this is the way I feel. Hopefully this will be the last time she chooses to do this sort of publicity while running.

and, I don't think it has been.

I loved to see her loosen up at the bar with a few drinks. I don't drink much, but I'll admit, it was refreshing to see that. I think problem drinkers need all the help they can get. Kids too. But I don't believe that means restricting this kind of measured behavior among adults.

I was really worried it would be taken the wrong way. In my daughters middle school they do political science as part of their social studies and world history/american history classes. I would just hate it if these pictures made a big paper and were brought into class. I hope they don't.

Thank you for understanding.

(Pssst and yes, it is nice that she got a chance to loosen up. The pace both candidates are going at is gruesome)

80. you got me thinking, though
I raised my two sons and complained about outside influences which were oblivious to my efforts to preserve their 'childhood'. They've both moved out now, so I'm feeling a little independent and have lost most of the protectiveness I used to be a champion for in my home. I would hope that the media who offer these perspectives would be more sensitive to those very important concerns you expressed.

the people in the background are looking at Hill the same way people were looking at Obama throwing gutter balls?

78. Downing boilermakers in a bar--the things some people will do to get elected.
Actually she looks pretty happy in that last shot--but after doing shots and a couple of brewskis I'd be pretty carefree too.

Hope that phone doesn't ring at 3:00 AM--I'd hate to see the President dealing with an international crisis with a king sized hangover.
