Kucinich Takes Roads Less Traveled in Bid
Campaign Stops in Neglected Areas Help Democrat Net 70 Convention Delegates

FROM: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A20705-2004Jun6.html
MOORESTOWN, N.J. -- As the candidate for president of the United States stepped onto the stage, flashing a smile and a wave, the audience exploded with cheers and applause and screams worthy of Beatles fans.

This went on for several minutes. Even the candidate was a little taken back. It was as though he had already won the election.

Which, of course, he had. Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Ohio) came to the Moorestown Friends School on Friday afternoon to thank the students for making him the landslide winner in their mock presidential primary. (Al Sharpton had come in second.) It was a magnanimous gesture amid a busy schedule. Kucinich, the only Democrat besides Sen. John F. Kerry (Mass.) left in the race, is still campaigning as though he were a viable candidate, sort of.

He crisscrossed the country, as he has done for months, campaigning in Montana, then here in New Jersey, then back in Montana before these two states hold the nation's final primaries Tuesday. Kucinich has seemed determined to visit places most candidates would ignore as not rich enough in potential voters.

2. better late than never, I suppose, for the NYTimes to notice Dennis
"Kucinich, the only Democrat besides Sen. John F. Kerry (Mass.) left in the race, is still campaigning as though he were a viable candidate, sort of."

"sort of" .... hmmmmmm

John Kerry should take note that the margin of victory may not be in the landscaped suburbs of corporate SUV America ... but the roads less traveled these days in contemporary America ... "some of the most forgotten corners of the country" ... corners of our country and roads where hope needs a hero ... where TV ads for $30,000 cars don't have a market ... where people need Universal Health care and a living wage, not corporate logos ... go, John Kerry ... the media will follow you ... America and the world need to see that that other city on the hill which Mario Cuomo keynoted at the 1984 Convention, the forgotten city, the anti-thesis of Reagan's shining city ... go, John Kerry ... it still exists ... it's just not within the camera's eye ... is it a wonder that it's not in people's hearts and minds ...

once upon a time, the Media did show us how the other half lived in America ... and, frequently ...

go, John Kerry ... the exposure can once again open minds and hearts of those people living outside these areas ... where you campaign will have spheres of influence thanks to the Media entourage which follow you ... you may find yourself on roads less traveled ... in"some of the most forgotten corners of the country" ... but, the message will reach those living in the landscaped suburbs of corporate SUV America ...

"For several months, Kucinich has made it a point to visit some of the most forgotten corners of the country -- public housing complexes, down-and-out main streets and the like -- to call attention to poverty, which he calls 'a weapon of mass destruction'."

4. Don't fight for Republican voters, get the sympathetic NON-voters
Maybe I'm a little biased about this, because I'm a big DK supporter (and I just got back from Camp Wellstone), but the way we progressives win races is by tapping into the NON-voters who previously have not had a REASON to vote.

All you need to do is give the registered, non-voting populace a REASON to vote for you, and they are YOURS. You don't need to "moderate" your message, or perform amazing, waffly, flip-floppy contortions-- just give them a REASON to vote FOR you.

You don't just get a voter for this election-- you get a supporter for LIFE, and all the elections after.

Perfectly stated!

It's really so simple. If *we* can figure it out, why can't the party leaders?

You've put it very well, wrapped it up in a neat package, and it's all ready for gift-giving.... to the congresscritters of our choice.

7. Working class hero
http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2004/06/13/biz_biz1eckberg.html

It's no surprise that former Cleveland Mayor Dennis Kucinich has emerged in 2004 as a workingman's hero.

It's also no surprise that he is the keynote speaker at Saturday's AFL-CIO Labor Council's 35th annual Cope Dinner.

Past speakers have include former Democratic Senators Howard Metzenbaum and John Glenn and former Cincinnati Mayor Jerry Springer.

They all had seven-figure bank accounts. Not so for Kucinich.
Three decades is a long time to bear the torch for working people everywhere, said Dan Radford, AFL-CIO executive secretary-treasurer in Greater Cincinnati.

Congressman Kucinich, the latest Buckeye-born politician in a long line to run for president, is the only guy in the 2004 race who doesn't have a silk-stocking pedigree and the checking account of a millionaire.

Kucinich is as blue collar as blue collar gets.

He wants to create a federal agency to keep track of energy companies. He wants to repeal the Taft-Hartley Act. He wants to end incentives that lead companies to shift jobs offshore, American jobs that are now going to workers in India, Latin America and a half-dozen other regions on the globe.

8. Maine Convention Video
In response to lots of requests from you folks out there, the video from the Maine Convention is now available for download in multiple formats at:

You can also order a VHS copy of Richard Kane's 53-minute video of Dennis's “electrifying” speech to the Maine Democratic Convention in Portland on May 22, 2004 and his conversation with supporters the night before. Get the details here on our forum.
