Bill Clinton: "Next, We'll See Him Run an Ad Saying: Vote For Me, I Don't Steal Cars."
Edited on Fri Apr-11-08 07:38 AM by K Gardner
Yes, he really said it, after laughing and making fun of one of Obama's PA ad about not taking money from Oil Co's.

This was Vincennes, IN speech yesterday

Thanks to Progetto for the video of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yn7Gq_8YxtE

During the same speech, he rambled on about the media and their Tuzla coverage, talking about Hillary "misspeaking" and how "they" made a big deal out of it. The entire thing was very strange to watch, was not ex-Presidential nor worthy of Bill Clinton and reeked of desperation and the revival of the same whisper/code word campaign that sunk them in S. Carolina. They do not learn, they do not go away..it won't end well for either of them.

President Bill Clinton signed legislation in 1996 overhauling
the welfare system. Current White House hopeful Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton,
who was first lady at the time, supported the bill.

6. Just read Jenmito's post.. I think it was the same speech she was talking
about in Booneville, IN.. because they're covering the sniper fire comments. Still looking for video.

Chris Matthews this a.m. said it was so 'bad' he didn't even want to comment on it. That it was "an old act and well-rehearsed", then he said, "well, politics is a tough business." Not even Matthews would go there.

this is the first morning in two weeks I've watched this tripe and now I remember why.

It starts me off with a really bad taste in my mouth for the whole day. Scarbrough is a nasty, vile, little man and you can almost see the glee with which he is reporting this. Has he ever gone off the Wright Bandwagon? I honestly haven't been watching and life has been much better !

18. any past tense reference, or stacking him in the wood pile
would destroy his most precious asset - his ego.

I have thought more than once that Bill is "TRYING" so hard to get her elected, while secretly and knowingly doing incredible damage to her chances of ever getting the nomination, ust to protect his superiority. HE was president, she was merely a failed candidate. if she allowed HIM to run the campaign, instead of Penn, she would have won. If HE had all the authority he demanded early on, she would be battling against McCain and only McCain.

He never wants to share the limelight, except on his terms. Now, seeing her in a position to eclipse him, he is working hard, which undermining the entire campaign.

I don't mean to be Dr. Frist, doing long range psychiatric evaluations from video, but I cannot shake the idea that all of his actions and misfires are deliberate.

Mostly I think they are grasping at whatever they think will win the news cycle of that particular day. It's old-style politics that just isn't good enough this time. It's day-to-day hand to hand combat, rather than an overall theme or message.

The term, "jumped the shark" fits Bill perfectly now, unfortunately.

Edited on Fri Apr-11-08 11:17 AM by loyalsister
I have said more than once that I thought he might be concerned that his wife's presidency might eclipse his own.
This language is something that will have crossed the line in the eyes of many.
"Mugged," stealing cars? Given the backlash this begs for, it sounds like he would rather have Hillary lose.

I know it is off topic but seriously! In my view if that scandal did not break out I think we would be ending 8 years of good times with Gore and the nation would have NEVER gone to war and we would be well on our way to a better energy future.

So thanks Bill Clinton you screwed us over then in my view and you CONTINUE to screw us over today in my view!

Verse 1:

Ask me, baby, why I'm sad
You been out all night, know you been bad
Don't tell me different, know it's a lie
Come kill me, honey, see how I cry
Liar, liar, pants on fire
Your nose is longer than a telephone wire

Verse 2:

Why must you hurt me, do what you do
Listen here, girl, can't you see I love you
Make a little effort, try to be true
I'll be happy, not so blue

Liar, liar, pants on fire
Your nose is longer than a telephone wire

Verse 3:

If you keep on tellin' me those lies
Still goin' out with other guys
There'll come a day I'll be gone
Take my advice, won't be long
Liar, liar, pants on fire
Your nose is longer than a telephone wire

Verse 4:

When that day comes, won't be mad
Be free of you, but I'll still be sad
In spite of your cheatin', still love you so
I'll be unhappy if I let you go
Liar, liar, pants on fire
Your nose is longer than a telephone wire

I am sure theres going to be a new youtube video on this one.

BILL: And some of them when they're 60 they'll forget something when they're tired at 11:00 at night, too.

Again, with this 11:00 at night nonsense! Repeat after me Bill:

December 29, 2007
February 29, 2008
March 17, 2008 (2x)
None of them at 11PM. None!

Does he not realise what he's said? "And some of them when they're 60 they'll forget something when they're tired at 11:00 at night, too."

What the hell will they then do when they're answering the 3am phone?

He then turned the issue back to the oil prices, etc. Nice move David

Plus, he can also raise a race controversy and remind people once again that Obama is the black candidate.

On edit: IMHO. I think there's also another issue he wants to raise but I won't post it here just in case that's not something they are already thinking about.

The people this gutter politics plays to... would NEVER have voted for Obama anyway. So maybe they're shoring up their base.

53. IMHO Obama needs not to rise to the race bait and to hit back hard that he is not a liar about the
oil companies being able to donate to people. They do it through PACS rather than directly, big difference, but he needs to clarify this point again and again by his representatives and in any response ads. Otherwise, Clinton is saying one thing, Obama another and people will be left wondering who to believe (though in my opinion it's pretty obvious).

I say that as someone who spent her childhood in the south. The good ole boys know how to play that race card with faux humor. Slick Willie's no better than Carville, with his comment about an Arkansas woman who outed Bill for their affair: "Drag a hunnert dollar bill through a trailer park, there's no telling what you'll catch."

There's racism in the rest of the country too, but the South has it's own, very snide variation, and it's come to the surface in Bill Clinton. What an embarassment as a former chief of state that man is.

234. It would be nice if you addressed what Clinton said.
What do you think about Clinton's "offhand" remark? What motivated him to say it? You use exaggeration in your post, and do not divulge what you think about it - instead questioning others' motivations for being outraged. Instead of attacking others, why not make an argument about what you think?

As a black voter, I'm accustomed to race-baiting in all its forms, including what Bill Clinton has done over the years, including in the current campaign. It doesn't make him into either angel or devil, because racism is institutional in American society - it's a part of mass communication, it's embedded in our language, it's social as well as individual. No single individual is responsible for it, of course. But if I'm voting for a party or person to serve my interests, I will consider their level of understanding of racial issues based on what they say as well as their policies, and I will notice coded appeals to racist beliefs in the context of politics. It's the oldest trick in a Southern Democrat's book to divide and conquer working classes by race, and as long as we the people tolerate it, it will continue.

74. The reason I'm glad this was reported in such a way is
That the Obama camp has spoken to the media about the Clinton's being racists. For real, they have claimed the Clinton's racism about every other week, and, people are beginning to relate all the racism talk to the Boy Who Cried Wolf one too many times. And a poll taken between last night and today reflects it wasn't racism by a margin of 2 to 1. By the time we get to the GE I believe people will be tired of the racism reported by the media about the Clinton's and the Obama camp leaking the racism messages to them. The other thing that came from BigDog yesterday people are talking about is the ad Obama pulled yesterday about the oil companies. No matter how Obama and Axelrod explained his vote, the central theme was that Obama voted to give the oil companies big tax breaks. I'm saying that's all the general public hear when the issue comes up, they have selective hearing when it comes to taxes. It was nice of Axelrod to pull that ad. Also, I'm glad BigDog brought the topic up because Axelrod was being disingenuous.

265. UALRBSofl, find one example where Obama's camps has said that the Clintons are racist.
I challenge you to find and post an example to support the key point in your post, "the Obama camp has spoken to the media about the Clintons being racist." If there's no evidence of this, it shouldn't be repeated, because it's a false charge.

What the Obama camp has done is object to Clinton's campaign making racially charged remarks, not the same as calling the Clintons racist. Repeatedly, the Clinton campaign has made politically charged references to Obama's racial identity, such as in the South Carolina primary remarks, MLK remarks, the BET president's remarks, via Ferraro, the faux outrage over Rev. Wright, stealing cars, etc. On balance, it does not even benefit the Obama camp to make the election about race, because it leads to a backlash among white voters and it dilutes the message of a campaign that has focused on our collective identity as Americans. From the beginning, the Obama campaign faced the risk of derailing its national campaign if it challenged Clinton's support among African Americans in any way that was out of bounds (remember when black voters supported Clinton?). Maybe some think it is out of bounds for Obama campaign to publicize the remarks about race by Clinton and her surrogates, but Obama's campaign didn't make them up.

Beyond responding to Clinton's charges, Obama's camp has no real incentive to center the campaign in a racial direction - once Obama established name recognition and a chance to win, he was bound to get a fair hearing among black voters in the primaries. However, the Clinton campaign has intentionally used the tactic of "playing the race card," everyone's favorite cliche at this point. BTW, it doesn't take an Obama campaign memo for committed black progressives to become incensed over Clinton's tactics - they are capable of making this judgment on their own. It doesn't even surprise me that some Democrats want to excuse Clinton's tactics, because there is a lot of strong partisanship in this race, and some Democrats are uneasy with the possibility of a black candidate at the top of the ticket. But the "quit complaining and vote for me" mentality among many white Democrats toward black voters needs to change, and the black community's views on the constant race baiting of the Clinton campaign needs to be respected, not as "groupthink" generated by Obama, but as a visceral response to these tactics that can contribute to a Democratic loss in November. If the Clintons had avoided making these coded appeals to racist sentiments, we wouldn't be having this conversation now, we'd be talking about other issues.

I hope their 20th century inbred racism and lying ways go with them.

But obviously the Clinton's will not leave the world stage in a dignified manner but in the worst sort of hillbilly white trash way you can imagine.

It isn't, and wont be pretty. The democratic convention will be a three ring circus with Bill and Hill as the ringleaders I'm afraid.

271. Try 2016. There is no way we're going to be able to function for 2012 if we don't win this one.
The Clintons have been spending way too much effort trashing the primary process. Between the FL MI issue of a calender that if Dean budges on now, we'll never have a holdable schedule, and then the attempt to deligitimize the use of caucuses, trying to organize a primary in 2012 is going to be almost impossible.

142. They must not have noticed the change in the electorate.
Since Bush 43 we, the Democratic electorate are more than sick of politics as usual, and hungry for real change. Not just saying it, but doing it. Obama is walking the walk, not only talking, not only saying words. The Clintons are far too politically jaded to understand this. They are preaching to a choir that isn't there any more. Not most of us, anyway. They offer smoke and mirrors, while Obama offers straight answers and transparency.

Given that choice, it's easy to see why Obama is ahead, despite their entrenched power and long-time connections. There are enough of us older progressives who have jumped at the chance to support a candidate free of the taint of big money. And most if not all of the younger ones naturally gravitate toward his idealism, because he's made it a reality in this campaign.

I am sorry but I have to disagree with the people who don't believe that this will happen. Bill and Hillary are highly admired politicians with a devoted support group. Anything and everything they say will be listened to and followed by these people and casting doubts on the honesty of your party colleague without backing it up with facts and figures is DISHONEST and DISINGENUOUS. This also follows their past instances of knee-capping Barack with incorrect interpretations and statements and then refusing to admit it- NAFTA in Ohio anyone?

Fact check has already rubbished the Clintonian claim that Obama is receiving money for big industries and lobbyists. He is in fact receiving money from the employees of these companies who are donating to his grassroots, bottom up campaign in the same manner as I have donated.

136. I don't think he is that stupid either
I tried to make some excuses for this crap months ago, but believe there is no need to anymore. He's making it clear enough that it is deliberate. I think it is his anger getting the best of him, and then he blurts out some gem from his nasty thug side - means the comment, hopes it sways someone, probably regrets getting pissed off and doing it ONLY if it blows back on him.

He had a bad attitude (late for so many important appts. - a disrepectful form of "neener neener, you can't tell ME what to do" childishness),a nasty temper and a whinning mouth on him while he was our president, in addition to doing anything it took to be the center of attention and "popular", including causing quite a bit of the mess we are in today so that people felt "good" about the illusory prosperity (along with our current creepy administration) but was a master at keeping it hidden. As he should - I don't care too much about that sort of thing, probably because if I start ruling out temper fits and unstableness, there won't be any candidates from which to choose. I am certain the only regret he will have over these suggestively racist remarks, right before the PA vote, is if they backfire on him. As long as any voters nod their heads and go "yeah, bro, know just what ya mean, wink, wink", he'll be happy he shot one off for the team. I expect a whole bunch more of this from him in the next week up to the election eve - and worse in nature. He better be careful - it did backfire in another state, and I am hoping that it will send these two losers way down the tube in PA. Even if not, the math has done them in.

Bill Clinton wants the WH so badly he can taste it - he doesn't give a carp that it will be Hillary's WH, because no matter how he gets there, he wants it all back for himself. The power, the glory, the good damn good times rolling for him and his good friends. If there wasn't a term limit, he'd have run against or in place of Hillary.

is doing his damndest to drag his wife's campaign down. As one psychologist commented in another blog:

"I have been suspecting this for some time. Everytime Hillary pulls out of some hole, Bill opens his mouth and kicks her right back in. We call this in the pyschology field: passive aggressive, narcissistic personality disorder. They both suffer from it but he is the king. He really does not want her to be president, NO matter what ya'll think."

I campaigned for him for the YDFL in 1996 (I was too young to really campaign in 1992). I didn't vote for him as I was 3 years under the voting age but I did what I could for him in my HS club.

One of my friends back in 1996 was a die hard Republican and she had a t-shirt of Clinton as the Lion King but the title above his head said, "The Liar King." I defended him back then. It's getting harder and harder to defend Bill and even Hillary now when they say statements like these.

129. I believe Kurt Andersen of New York Magazine said it best:
Bill may believe sincerely that Hillary would make the better president. However, I agree with the suggestion that whats driving him is not so much spousal loyalty as his own desperate narcissism, less a determination to get Hillary in the White House than to keep Obama out of it. How dare Obama say, he whined, that Reagan had a more lasting impact on America than I did? Indeed, an Obama presidency would be an unacceptable affront to Bill Clintons sense of his own historic gloriousness, for Obama is the new, highly improved version of Bill Clinton. Like Clinton in 1992, Obama is the thoughtful, oratorically brilliant 46-year-old new-style progressive who seems more pragmatist than ideologue. Whereas Clinton in 1998 was called the first black president in a metaphorical, mack-daddy sensefor his pleasure-loving appetites that had run afoul of the ManObama would be the post-ironic real thing. Obamas speech about race was, among other things, a sublime and successful feat of political triangulationwhich no doubt redoubled Clintons jealousy about the new guys stealing his act.
For Bill, its all about Bill. It was obviously the same desperate competitiveness with Obama that led Clinton, for instance, to concoct his revisionist history of their respective positions on the invasion of Iraq. He, Bill Clinton, opposed Iraq from the beginning, while Obamas bona fide claims of opposition are the biggest fairy tale that I have ever seen.

138. Obamaniacs are True Maniacs
Edited on Fri Apr-11-08 10:00 AM by kennetha
Saying that Clinton is playing the race card with this remark is sheer -- I can't think of a word to describe it. It must be a kind cult induced lunacy.

Bill Clinton was obviously RIDICULING Obama by pointing out that IT"S OBVIOUS that he doesn't take money from oil companies because IT"S ILLEGAL to do so. STEALING CARS is illegal too. You don't see him running an ad saying HEY GUESS WHAT. I DON"T STEAL CARS.

NO POLITICIAN STEALS CARs. NO POLITICIANS TAKE MONEY from OIL COMPANIES>

Do you really NOT get the parallel, OBAMANATION?

You know what I think is going on here, maybe. Obamanuts reason like this (well, if you can call what they do reasoning).

Bill or HIllary or somebody criticizes Barack. Obamaphiles think St Obama is above all criticism. They regard all criticism as sacrilege against their idol. They also seem to assume that any criticism of Obama MUST be an appeal to white rednecks. So they see racialized subtexts everywhere.

Of course, they are often the one's doing the racializing. It's sort of a Freudian reaction-formation kind of thing.

That looney-tunes Obama supporters see racialized subtexts everywhere? That they can't admit that their man did anything stupid?

The analogy that Bill Clinton was making is so OBVIOUS that you're failure to acknowledge says much more about you than it does about him.

THere is no more point making an ad praising yourself for not taking money from oil companies than there is making an ad praising yourself for not stealing cars. Both are illegal; no politician would do either; its as odd to make an ad saying I don't take Oil company money as it would be to make an ad saying I don't steal cars.

Now where exactly is the race-baiting in this? Explain yourself!

I think it's really in you. You must think that it's black people who steal cars. or you must think that Bill mentioned stealing cars because you think that the people who might vote for Hillary are the kinds of people who think that Black people steal cars. Or something.

But man what a stretch!!!

The combination of images in his statement is unmistakable, whether I add fuel to it or not. And I don't have to, Clinton's words speak for themselves, he's not stupid. Its the same shit he pulled in South Carolina. It may well be true that he is not a racist. But he is willing to use the language when it suits him and his wife, which is worse. You know, being the first Black president and all.

That doesn't fit your paradigm, so I wouldn't expect agreement from you.

Which is the legal way that campaigns get money from oil companies and that McCain and Clinton do take money from oil companies that was the point.

I live in PA I see the commercials I know what he said and so does Bill and he is twisting the meaning to deflect a real point.

There are many crimes to use as a metaphor but he chose one that could clearly have racial tones. For a man who can find nuance in the semantics of the word "is" I doubt that the phrase was chosen randomly or unconsciously.

You also ignored my point that there are many crimes that he could have used as a comparison but he used one that could be racial. But "vote for me I'm not an insider trader" doesn't have the tone he was going for, for the voters he was trying to nudge.

I am not obsessed with race. The Clintons bring it up with the Ferraro comment and his SC quote about Jesse Jackson. It's kind of old school politics and I didn't invent it with some obsession.

this morning said that they have pulled the ad. Maybe yesterday was the last day of it running.

But you ARE being obsessed with race. You can't take his use of "not being a car thief" at face value as what it is obviously intended to be. It's obviously intended merely to ridicule Barack claim in that ad that he deserves a vote because he doesn't do something illegal.

Now you're putting in some unwritten law that says that if you are going to make that point you have to make sure not to use an analogy that might possibly be interpreted by some ill-willed uncharitable person as having racial overtones.

You're suggesting that if someone doesn't go tip-toeing around all possible (even wildly implausible) racialized misreading of things that he/she says, then that person is "injecting race."

I think it's the over-racialized sort of thought and word police who actually doing the race-baiting.

And I'm very disturbed by this tendency among Obama supporters to put absolutely everything in racialized terms. I thought you folks were supposed to favor race-transcendence. I think you do but only when it suits your political purposes. When it suits your purposes to do otherwise, you can race-bait with the best and most subtle of them.

Like I said in a different post, it's sort of Freudian reaction-formation thing.

221. but that arguement is based on a lie
Clinton is lying when he said that the ad stated that he wants your vote that because he didn't do something illegal (taking money from oil companies). Obama's ad said that he didn't take money from PACS or lobbyists something legal. So first you have to twist what he said to make it imply that he said something incorrect (I don't take illegal donations) then come up with the comparison(I don't steal cars). The whole arguement is based on a twisting and reinterpretation of what he said was that you cannot trust Hillary or McCain because they are bought by Big Oil. Clinton and now you use racism or lack of it as a deflection from this point.

First they tried to twist it by saying because he accepts money from EMPLOYEES that means that he was wrong in the ad. But that is not the same as what he said. Now they are saying the ad was wrong because he doesn't take money from the companies themselves which is not the same as what he said. It seems that there's an awful lot of coming up with new ways of describing what he said than actually responding to what he said. Is it because there is no response? No defense?

It's as ridiculous as saying that even though I am entitled to $400K from a lobbyist for Colombian trade I am not influenced by that money. That money has no effect on influence. Then why is there lobbying at all if it didn't help?

But of course they don't discuss any of this. They just say he said something he didn't in two different ways and then say something designed to be controversial so no one, including us, is actually getting them to explain how they are influenced by the money. Genius if you ask me. But not something I respect and I am so disappointed in The Clintons now because of this.

156. Man I can't believe this! I used to love Bill Clinton so much, but now?
The obvious, cringe inducing racism aside of this, is there any truth to his arguement or is that another lie or shading of the truth. I live in PA and see the commercial that he is commenting on and Obama doesn't just say "I don't take money from oil companies." He says I don't take money from lobbyists and PACs connected to oil companies. So here Bill is saying that Obama is a liar and an idiot and of course what he is saying is ludicrous because it's illegal and no one gets a check made out to them from an oil company's account.

But is it true that Hillary and McCain do not take money from PACS and lobbyists connected to oil or is what Obama said accurate and this is the same old Clinton lying machine. the meaning of is is etc. Semantic games hoping to get idiot's votes?

But of course I'm livid about the stealing cars comment. It is beyond the pale, shameful for an ex-president to say. I'd expect it from George Bush but Clinton weighs every word and knows exactly what he is saying.

So if Michelle got up and said "Next, We'll See Her Run an Ad Saying: Vote For Me, I Don't Give Blow Jobs in Downtown Alleys" would you be OUTRAGED?

Yes, you would be TOTALLY outraged, and rightly so.

193. Because
the language "blow jobs in downtown alleys" is intrinsically offensive. And there would be no point.

Did you realize that it is illegal to take money from oil companies? Corporations have been banned from donating money for 100 years. In effect, Obama WAS saying "Vote for me cause I don't break the law."

Isn't that a little ridiculous. Clinton was pointing out how ridiculous.

You are the one injecting race into this, not Bill Clinton. Are you obsessed with race? See racists lurking everywhere? I think you may need some help.

Everyone that thought Bill Shaheen's "drug dealer" comment was an innocent little statement...here is another piece of the puzzle.

tho at the time I didn't know Obama at all. Then there was SC, and Fairy Tale, and Jesse Jackson, and the debate where she accused him of being associated with a "slumlord" and "sex shops close to schools", then HE CANT WIN, then Wright.. well, it never really ends, does it.. just gets more despicable.

which nobody does because it's illegal, but he doesn't tell you that NOBODY takes money from oil companies because it's illegal, just that HE doesn't, as if he were superior to others.

He also doesn't tell you that he takes money from bundlers who put together contributions from the CEOs and other employees of oil companies, so he IS taking money from people with a vested interest in oil companies, who donate because they want candidates to help the oil companies screw the consumer.

231. Woke up, grabbed coffee, sat down and saw this topic.
Read the opening header and my jaw dropped in disbelief. Opened the topic, began reading responses, then viewed the video.

I've never addressed the issue of racism on DU in any way, shape or form. I understand that certain topics trigger deep feelings, beliefs, and emotions in people.

But for me, this morning, this is a watershed moment. I've no doubt that Bill Clinton has jumped the shark, that his statement was racially coded, and that it was deliberately made.

I am so sad, so angry, and in tears as I type. I've come to expect this from the GOP; but in my lifetime, I've never expected this from any Democrat, much less our ex-potus. By and through his nasty, race-baited utterance, the Emperor has become naked.

And don't tell me HRC is not responsible for what her husband says. His ass could be parked on the sidelines and his mouth taped shut. His words could be scripted -- no more spontaneous, off the cuff remarks. No, his speeches are crafted, his words deliberately spoken, and her campaigns tone is now beyond disgraceful... it vile, it is base, it is shameful, it is pure and utterly indefensible. Nothing less than a full apology from Bill Clinton and removal from any further campaigning will suffice as far as I am concerned.

Simply put, I am appalled.

feel your pain and have been there, through the tears and anger, already.

I'm going through fresh anguish now because I'm reading what Obama went through as a child/teen/young adult (in his first book), and he is talking about many of the things that are going on in this campaign and speaking in heartwrenching, soulful terms about what it feels like to be the object of this. He has been called names that are untypeable to me. I cannot imagine the inner pain this causes him.. yet he says nothing.

We need this man.. this country needs Barack Obama.

It was just a coincidence that instead of using John Edwards, who won South Carolina in the last primary, yet didn't win the nomination, as an example of somebody winning South Carolina, he used Jesse Jackson.

And it's just a coincidence that of all the things Bill Clinton could have used as dumb reasons to vote for Barack Obama, he used he doesn't steal cars.

He didn't use, Barack Obama eats wheaties, vote for him, or Barack Obama is good at basketball, vote for him, or any of thousands of other examples. Stealing cars is just the one he came up with at the time.
