Putting the word Nader in the same sentence as Kucinich is really being insulting.

I used to live in MN's old 2nd Congressional District, which covered the SW corner of Minnesota, which is right next to South Dakota. Demographically, both places are very, very similar. It was one of the least-densely populated CDs in the country. The largest town in the district only had 9,000 people in it.

Back when I lived there, we had a rather large LaRouche contingent living in the district, and they were a very vocal and hostile minority at our conventions.

It seems the LaRouche nutjobs congregate in remote rural areas-- probably easier to put tinfoil around your house and not have the neighbors complain, I'd guess.

They were bullies, and would disrupt conventions if their platform issues were not accepted into the convention. They harrassed other delegates, and were very hostile and aggressive.

They were a bunch of conspiracy-theory nuts, who were convinced that the Queen of England was an international narco-trafficker who controlled both the US and USSR. One of their great ideas was to drain the Great Lakes to irrigate the desert SW. They also advocated cutting giant icebergs off the polar ice caps and using the water to turn Arizona into a garden.

I can tolerate total whack-jobs (some are my best friends), but not when they're aggressive and threatening violence if they don't get their way.

My most vivid memory of them is at the 1998 MN Cong Dist 2 convention. They had a candidate running for the DFL endorsement for the US House seat (then occupied by Vin Weber). I remember that they were shoving copies of the New Federalist in everyone's faces, and pushing some LaRouche publication for some ridiculous price.

I actually kept the copy of the New Federalist for a while, because it was so twisted. It was like a glimpse into a very paranoid mind. I remember one article by LaRouche's wife, Helga Zepp, about some great big conspiracy in the music world.

Apparently, a couple of centuries ago, the pitch of the note A was fixed at 440. Before that, it was at 427, or something like that. To most normal people, the difference between these two frequencies is negligible. But ol' Helga wrote two whole pages about how it was a conspiracy to ruin the greatest operatic vocalists of all time, because the A=440 pitch was too high, and was straining their vocal chords, thereby ruining their voices.

Of course the only normal reaction to this would be :wtf:. They're a strange lot.

Yeah, that one was a disaster!!! My friend, who was 16 at the time, was working hard for the endorsed Dems. But wouldn't you know it, the WASPy "Fairchild" and "Hart" won the primary, probably because their names were easier to spell, and looked more "familiar" to many people.

He told me numerous stories about these two, and some of the outrageous things they said ("I hate Jews", from Fairchild, for example). The two REAL Dems had to actually run under a separate party banner that fall; and in a state that tends to vote straight ticket (Dem in Chicagoland, GOP downstate) it completely screwed the Democrats.

The LaRouchees may be putting on a "nice" face this year, but I STILL don't trust them. I was around the party in the 80s, and I know what they're like, and I'm not buying the nice act for a minute.
