Hillary interviews with Philadelphia Gay News; McCain, Obama decline

Submitted by lambert on Thu, 2008-04-03 20:44.

Of course, McCain would decline, and after the whole Donnie McLurkin thing, it’s only natural that Obama would bow out, too. Guess there’s just some kinds of people that Unity doesn’t apply to. Whatever.

snip

Now, I have to say that I don’t have a great understanding of these issues—though I imagine Hillary’s position on, say, gay marriage is hardly a maximalist one.

But for pity’s sake, at least she talked to the community! How are “unity,” and “change,” and “transformation” anything other than empty words when you won’t treat the whole country the same way and talk to anybody? Especially people who still suffer from great prejudice and discrimination? Where’s the justice in that?

10. Check out the dates of those two events,
and you will see that this justification, though widely and uncritically circulated in Obamaphile circles, is bullshit.

7. didn't she sit interview with Scaife as well?
Do candidates get points added or subtracted for sitting down a with paper that counts hate mongers like Brent Bozell and Jonah Goldberg among their columnists?

15. If you want the endorsement, you have
to interview with the Editorial Board.

Doesn't mean you have to like it.

34. so the views of the publication are irrelevant it's really just chasing an endorsement?
If it doesn't indicate their acceptance of the publication, then why does it matter who did or didn't interview with the Philadelphia Gay News ?

35. I will break it down...
The paper is the largest paper in that city. People read it every day. It is a common and almost ceremonious ritual to go and sit before the Op/Ed board.

This is special because Scaife basically called Hillary Clinton a murderer, a lesbian, and etc...

She had the courage to go one-on-one with those assholes.

No apologies needed from her. You should be cheering her rather than chastising her.

39. I'm neither 'cheering' nor 'chastising'
I'm simply asking if candidates should get credit or ridicule for pandering to any particular publication.

You're the one that implied that there is not necessarily a relationship between what publications a candidate likes and which publications they choose to interview with.
I happen to agree with you on that... which is why I ask my question.

If a candidate interviewed with one publication for political expedience, why should we think that same candidate didn't interview with some other publication for political expedience?

43. I am trying to figure out your angle.
This is politics and people should do interviews with Papers/Mags that will put them in a favorable light and some that will just give them exposure.

I am glad Hillary bit the bullet and met with Scaife. He is a douche and if he would have gone ballistic on her there would have been witnesses...

Seriously, I hope Hillary meets with as many as will have her.

44. I thought that was obvious
I 'like' neither candidate.
I like their vitriolic supporters even less because they tend to be more dishonest than the candidates.

If Hillary's interview with Scaife wasn't an endorsement of his views/methods, then why should we think her interview with the Philadelphia Gay News was an endorsement of their views/methods?

If we are to believe that who candidates choose to interview does indicate some measure of support/acceptance of the publication, then Hillary has some serious explaining to do regarding her sit down with Scaife.

It can't be both ways.

19. What do you expect? They wouldn't go to the State of the Black Union either
Hillary did, in the face of a very hostile crowd, I might add. I applaud her for it.

And regarding the fact that (Bill) Clinton couldn't implement gays serving openly in the military as his first act as President, which he wanted to do, people should put the blame where it really lies - with Colin Powell, who essentially refused to implement it.

Hillary is fearless. I love her.

23. Edwards stiffed them too. As did HRC at the time.
The Democratic race for president has been heating up for months. And where once eight contenders graced the national stage, only two have made it to Pennsylvania’s primary: Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. In these months, an alliance of LGBT papers sought to speak with the top three contenders — Clinton, Obama and former Sen. John Edwards — to no avail. Now, with the delegate spread hovering around 150, smaller constituencies, including the LGBT community and their superdelegates, are playing a larger role.

PGN invited both Clinton and Obama, as well as presumptive Republican candidate John McCain, to speak with us. Only Clinton granted an interview.

http://www.epgn.com/

So, it's not that she cares, it's that she's desperate for every last vote. Over a month ago, she wouldn't grant an interview; now she gives one. Good for her.

32. I love her laugh, and that photo brings it. She is so genuine
when she laughs. She has a great sense of humor.

I have known for a long time that she is the only real supporter of gays, lesbians, transgenders, etc. She is the real deal, and I hope a lot of people realize that Obama is NOT before it's too late.

I believe in Hillary, but the forces that have been brought to bear against her are formidable, and totally Rovian inspired, I believe, directed.

Her strength and courage are only more illuminated by this onslaught.

Hillary supporters will not waver and will support her until. . . . . .
