Jimmy Carter Hints That He Will Cast His Vote For Obama
Edited on Thu Apr-03-08 06:34 AM by kpete
Obama May Get Carter’s Support
From Damilola Oyedele in Abuja, 04.03.2008

Former President of the United States, Jimmy Carter has hinted that he might cast his vote for Senator Barack Obama to aid his emergence as the candidate for the Democrats in America’s bid to elect a new President.

.....................

Carter, who was accompanied by his wife Rosalynn, did not profess a direct support for Obama but rather choose to make a veiled statement.

“We are very interested in the primaries. Don’t forget that Obama won in my state of Georgia. My town which is home to 625 people is for Obama, my children and their spouses are pro- Obama.

My grandchildren are also pro- Obama. As a Super Delegate, I would not disclose who I am rooting for but I leave you to make that guess," he said.

the talk about the "will of the people" is bullshit since Kennedy and Richardson will cast their votes for Obama despite their states going for Clinton.

Disagreement is not a personal attack. That's the pov of a putative "conservative" who thinks anyone who has a
difference of opinion is a traitor.

I support the DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE -- that person is Obama, no matter what the conservatives in DLC might like.

If you can't handle criticism of your candidate, then you need some thicker skin. You might have missed the thread where Helen Thomas said nice things about Hillary, and most Obama supporters were very respectful of her. Now contrast that to the reaction you Hillary supporters have towards ANYONE who dares either praise Obama or criticize Hillary.

113. Agreed
I didn't see a single Obama supporter blast Thomas, even though we disagreed with her. But as soon as a major political figure endorses Obama, Clinton supporters are - literally - hissing "Judas!", and attacking that person's record. Granted, Carter wasn't our most effective Democratic president, but he wasn't the unmitigated disaster Reagan and Bush supporters claim he was. And compared to their administrations, Carter looks like a Nobel Prize winner...wait...never mind.

I used to think a Clinton presidency wouldn't be all that bad, but some of her supporters are making me have second thoughts. Oh, I'll still vote for her if she gets the nomination, but I'm going to need a much larger clothespin.

Carter taught us not to waste oil, that the supply was limited and in the hand of folks who are not our friends. Carter told the truth when it wasn't pleasant. People didn't like that so of course he was followed by years of "dont'worry, be happy, greed is good" Repubs.

When he spoke to the nation, wearing his sweater and speaking of the need to conserve, my twenty two year old self was listening.

In the thirty + years that have followed, I've done as much as I can to help protect Mother Earth.

As far as presidents that have actually tried to help We, the People, Jimmy Carter is very close to the top.

112. Nixon and Vietnam were responsible for that.
Debts incurred from the war, and Nixon taking the dollar off the gold standard in 1972 to pay for it all caused the inflation that Carter inherited. Gold went from $35/oz. to $800/oz in 1980.

But Carter appointed Volcker as FED chariman who ultimately crushed inflation. Bill Clinton by comparison was the best Republican president ever. he reappointed Greenspan who allowed the stock market bubble to occur, which led to the real estate bubble, and which has led to our present dire straits.

Carter had the misfortune of being president at a bad time. A real Democrat though unlike Clinton.

I mean.. how you define "successful" can vary in many ways. I have a feeling many would think Carter's presidency wasn't as bad as Clinton's just based on the way it ended.

I personally don't know much about Carter - I was 1 when he was in office. But, I do like his veiled endorsement!

77. Well then, let me educate you.

Nixon altered American foreign policy towards the Soviet Union by trying to open up their society (in contrast to every president since Truman all of whom followed Churchill's Iron Curtain seige strategy). Ford and Carter followed suit. The Soviet people started turning away from Communism when they saw the benefits of an open society.

But then Reagan got elected and tried reinstating the old seige policy. When western Europe told Reagan to go fuck himself and continued opening up the Soviet Union, the Soviet people did rally 'round the flag for one last decade in the face of Reagan's antagonism. As soon as he was out of the picture, the people turned on their government, and the USSR was no more.

Carter negotiated a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. Arab nations had invaded Israel several times beginning the day Israel was founded and continuing through 1973. Carter's treaty led to an Arab nation recognizing Israel's right to exist for the first time (the Egyptian president was killed for it, but his policies continued). No Arab nation has attacked Israel since.

FDR put Nixon in charge of price setting during WW-II to stop war profiteering, etc. Nixon got some dumbass idea in his head he should do the same thing during Vietnam and the first Arab oil embargo. So prices were kept artificially low. Ford removed most of that pricing with Carter removing the last. Inflation naturally followed as soon as Ford began removing those price constraints. The market finally got caught up with inflation at only 7% Carter's last year in office (it was double digits under Ford and peaked around 19% under Carter). And it was practically non-existant his last quarter in office.

Yet wages actually increased faster than inflation at that time!

Unfortunately, all of the above was trumped by the Iranian hostage crisis. There was no such thing as Delta Force at the time, so Carter had no direct action response except to freeze Iranian funds, etc. Carter ordered the creation of Delta Force at that time, but they screwed up their first time in action (not surprising for a hastily crafted construct).

Then Reagan came along and obtained the release of our hostages through the simple expedient of giving in to all of Iran's demands. But instead of telling the American people what he did, he just gave us a lot of John Wayne speeches. As a result the majority of Americans to this day think Iran gave us back the hostages because they were afraid of Reagan.

Over the next twelve years of Reagan/Bush, Islamic terrorists would take a string of American hostages for whom Reagan/Bush would pay the ransom ... even after they killed one of the hostages despite having already being paid ransom. Following the "Black Hawk Down" incident, the Somali warlord tried holding our pilot for ransom. Instead of continuing the Reagan/Bush policy of appeasement, the wimpy, liberal Democrat Clinton sent in the US Marines. Somali gave us back our pilot and received nothing in return.

Edited on Thu Apr-03-08 07:17 AM by karynnj
who knows what history's final verdict will be. Carter did have the guts to recognize that oil was a scarce resource and that the US only had 3% of the world's oil - and we were using nearly 25% of what, on an annual basis, was used. The danger then was that OPEC could throw the US economy into turmoil - now it is governments with likely covert ties to the terrorists could use oil as a tool.

What did Carter do that first caused derision - he pushed conservation - smaller, more fuel efficient cars, and lowering the thermostat. Between Carter and the reality of higher gas prices and the annoyance of queuing for gas, cars became more fuel efficient and smaller. Millions of people installed programmable thermostats. He also pushed research into alternative fuels.

This was cast as against America's God given right to have no limits on what we want by Reagan. Clinton did not challenge that - SUVs continued to get heavier in the 1990s and they were not counted as cars, under the CAFE rules. If they were included, the mileage would have actually gone down in these years. It was an era of continued good times, fueled by huge unsustainable on paper asset gains from inflated stock.

Given the connection between the middle east and near east to oil - Carter may be seen better in history. Add to that the Camp David Peace accords - which were better than the end of term Clinton negotiations.

Throw in that no one questions Carter's basic decency and integrity and when looked at long term for the impact on the country and party, (especially if HRC loses) I think it might be better to be Carter - shunned by the party at conventions until 2004 than Clinton.

I will leave it to historians to debate who was the more successful presidency. But when a Democratic President speaks, you should have more respect than to just say so what....the entire universe does not lie in relation to the Clintons, they are not the center for all comparisons. But since you brought up Bill Clinton, you don't suppose that the reason this president endorsed Hillary had anything to do with him being married to her, do ya?

101. That's easy. Jimmy Carter was more successful
Jimmy Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize at least somewhat as a result of what was accomplished during his presidency:

"During his presidency (1977-1981), Carter's mediation was a vital contribution to the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, in itself a great enough achievement to qualify for the Nobel Peace Prize." -- The Norwegian Nobel Committee

Bill Clinton, on the other hand, poor soul, is undoubtedly still somewhat tormented by the Ghosts of Rwanda.

Jimmy Carter stood strong for "human rights." Can't quite remember anything Bill Clinton stood strong for.

In addition, Jimmy Carter sought to promote energy conservation. Bill Clinton, on the other hand, gave up on Kyoto, and today the U.S. stands almost alone among nations in refusing to ratify Kyoto.

109. Your point being...?
Talk about a slight of hand to change the topic.

What does it matter that Bill Clinton had a better presidency? How does that have anything to do with Carter supporting Obama? It's quite simple to throw your comment back at you and ask who has done more in humanitarian terms? Who is more respected in the international community? I would hope that Bill Clinton would throw his support to his wife--it is expected. The fact that he (Clinton) does so means absolutely nothing.

I'm not sure that was a good idea. I respect and admire Carter, just as I do Obama. I hope Obama takes the nomination. However, Carter was one of the few remaining heavyweights not to declare. Which means he could have been used to heal the party when the time comes. I wonder whether it would have been better for him to remain officially neutral like Gore and Pelosi?

Seriously though, I see nothing wrong with a Superdelegate voting for the candidate who won the Dem primary in their State.

I wish Ted Kennedy, John Kerry and Deval Patrick would follow the same logic! ;-)

I've always admired Jimmy Carter for working for peace in the world and his work for Habitat for Humanity. Not that he's perfect-nobody is. I kind of thought that he would support Obama and it's nice to know for sure.

55. Bull-fucking-shit
A lot of what happened during his presidency was far beyond his control. Maybe you could enlighten us as to which policies of his makes him one of the worst presidents ever?

After all, you're throwing Carter against some pretty heavy competition - our current president, Pappy Bush, Nixon, Herbert Hoover, Warren G Harding, etc.

That whole Middle East Peace Thing; that totally sucked.

And truth about energy policy -- you know Americans just
can't handle the truth.

And that quiet grace he had, what a turn-off!

And what about Habitat for Humanity? He leaves the
presidency and becomes a fucking carpenter???

Edited on Thu Apr-03-08 05:50 PM by Texas Hill Country
his middle eastern policy was amateurish at best, and IMO disasterous.

The loss of Iran to Islamic extremists(which happened under his watch, and to a large extent because of his inattention, misunderstanding, ignorance and failure to act) was one of the biggest FP bungles in US history and has been the modern root of many of the problems we have in that region. another disasterous consequence of the fall of the shah was the oil scarcity of 1979 and the victory of OPEC in finally controlling the international oil market...

His presidency is in no small part the cause of the victory of both Islamic radicalism and Opec, 2 issues that remain the biggest ones we have to deal with today.

His energy policy and diplomatic ineptitude led to some of the biggest spikes in gas prices, huge interest rate hikes, massive inflation.

his quiet grace? seriously? I mean, great guy, charitable as hell, but not a good President.

Hoover and Harding were a waste of space but their mistakes did not have the decade long problems that Carters did.

Carter screwed up Iran BIG

Carter's policies did nothing to fix the huge inflation problems

Carter's diplomatic weaknesses led to OPEC using oil as blackmail and quadrupling the price of oil, and the fall of Iran cut off a huge portion of the non-opec oil causing further spikes.

Carter gave away the Panama Canal.

He was also a "process president" which was an issue... he concentrated on making sure that the processes of government were pure instead of making sure that the content was good. He thought that if you used good mean, the end would be good... which is not necessarily true.

Also, Carter screwing with Cuba under the Clinton administration was dumb. He needed to stfu

Carter was a great guy, warm heart, good soul... just not a good president

It went from being a poke in the eye to the Panamanians to being a national treasure of their country.

The evil commies never took it over or blocked us from using it.

It was brilliant.

111. I believe you may just have gotten every single part of that backwards.

"Carter screwed up Iran BIG"

After being betrayed by the British, French and Germans, the Arab nations cited Carter as the reason they were willing to trust the United States against Iraq in 1991. Unfortunately, we betrayed that trust (we have had troops in Iraq since 1991, not 2003 as most Americans seem to believe) which led to two attacks on the World Trade Center.

"Carter's policies did nothing to fix the huge inflation problems"

Inflation before Carter was in double digits. While it continued rising to a peak under Carter, it was only 7% for the entire year of 1980 and actually running at an annual rate under 3% the last quarter. Maybe you're right. Maybe Carter's policies did nothing to fix it. Maybe it is all just coincidence. Or maybe Carter's policies did fix the problem.

"Carter's diplomatic weaknesses led to OPEC using oil as blackmail and quadrupling the price of oil, and the fall of Iran cut off a huge portion of the non-opec oil causing further spikes."

The OPEC Oil Embargo occurred in 1973 long before Carter. Because of Carter's diplomatic strengths, OPEC actually INCREASED production during the 1979 energy crisis. That crisis following on the heels of the Iranian revolution was the equivalent of the Hurricane Katrina energy crisis. There was never a shortage of energy, but a panic in the market (or more like speculators taking advantage of the situation) drove the prices up anyway.

"Carter gave away the Panama Canal."

Aside from the incredibly obvious (it was never ours), treaty negotiations for returning control began under LBJ and continued under Nixon and Ford until finalized under Carter. That treaty did not call for the US actually handing over the canal until the end of 1999 when Clinton, not Carter, finally gave away the Panama Canal.

"He was also a "process president" which was an issue... he concentrated on making sure that the processes of government were pure instead of making sure that the content was good. He thought that if you used good mean, the end would be good... which is not necessarily true."

You might be right on this one.
Texas Hill Country - 1
Reality - 4

"Also, Carter screwing with Cuba under the Clinton administration was dumb. He needed to stfu"

Who keeps up an embargo for decades? Add to that the fact that all of our allies abandoned the embargo long ago means WE are the only ones being hurt by this embargo.

Have you no shame? No sense of irony? No decency? No respect for difference of opinion or debate?

Your actions remind me of the Bush Administration. Anyone who speaks out against them is "UnAmerkan" too.

62. If the hostage rescue had succeeded, history might have been different...
Edited on Thu Apr-03-08 11:34 AM by tokenlib
We all saw how mighty Wal-Mart was brought to its knees in the past week of cable news...

Looking back at how the Iranian hostage crisis--night after night on "Nightline"--and how every day it sapped the strength out of the Carter presidency. It went on for months. It gave Reagan the gift that kept on giving.

If the rescue mission hadn't died in the desert--and had somehow succeeded...it might have changed history.
Carter was ahead of his time on energy (and Reagan was delusional in pulling the solar panels off the White House)--handled Three-Mile Island admirably. He wasn't the failure people are led to believe-- a lot of events were beyond his power.

Carter got a bad rap and continues to do so. His implied support of Obama is welcome.
