"I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."
--Hillary Clinton, speech at George Washington University, March 17, 2008.

Hillary Clinton has been regaling supporters on the campaign trail with hair-raising tales of a trip she made to Bosnia in March 1996. In her retelling, she was sent to places that her husband, President Clinton, could not go because they were "too dangerous." When her account was challenged by one of her traveling companions, the comedian Sinbad, she upped the ante and injected even more drama into the story. In a speech earlier this week, she talked about "landing under sniper fire" and running for safety with "our heads down."

There are numerous problems with Clinton's version of events.

The Facts
As a reporter who visited Bosnia soon after the December 1995 Dayton Peace agreement, I can attest that the physical risks were minimal during this period, particularly at a heavily fortified U.S. Air Force base, such as Tuzla. Contrary to the claims of Hillary Clinton and former Army secretary Togo West, Bosnia was not "too dangerous" a place for President Clinton to visit in early 1996. In fact, the first Clinton to visit the Tuzla Air Force base was not Hillary, but Bill, on January 13, 1996.

Had Hillary Clinton's plane come "under sniper fire" in March 1996, we would certainly have heard about it long before now. Numerous reporters, including the Washington Post's John Pomfret, covered her trip. A review of nearly 100 news accounts of her visit shows that not a single newspaper or television station reported any security threat to the First Lady. "As a former AP wire service hack, I can safely say that it would have been in my lead had anything like that happened," said Pomfret.

According to Pomfret, the Tuzla airport was "one of the safest places in Bosnia" in March 1996, and "firmly under the control of Big Red One," the 1st Infantry Division.

Far from running to an airport building with their heads down, Clinton and her party were greeted on the tarmac by smiling U.S. and Bosnian officials. An eight-year-old Moslem girl, Emina Bicakcic, read a poem in English. An Associated Press photograph of the greeting ceremony, above, shows a smiling Clinton bending down to receive a kiss.

"There is peace now," Emina told Clinton, according to Pomfret's report in the Washington Post the following day, "because Mr. Clinton signed it. All this peace. I love it."

The First Lady's schedule, released on Wednesday and available here, confirms that she arrived in Tuzla at 8.45 a.m. and was greeted by various dignitaries, including Emina Bicakcic, (whose name has mysteriously been redacted from the document.)

You can see CBS News footage of the arrival ceremony here. The footage shows Clinton walking calmly out of the back of the C-17 military transport plane that brought her from Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany.

Among the U.S. officials on hand to greet Clinton at the airport was Maj. Gen. William Nash, the commander of U.S. troops in Bosnia. Nash told me that he was unaware of any security threat to Clinton during her eight-hour stay in Tuzla. He said, however, that Clinton had a "busy schedule" and may have got the impression that she was being hurried on her way.

According to Sinbad, who provided entertainment on the trip along with the singer Sheryl Crow, the "scariest" part was deciding where to eat. As he told Mary Ann Akers of The Post, "I think the only 'red-phone' moment was: 'Do we eat here or at the next place.'" Sinbad questioned the premise behind the Clinton version of events. "What kind of president would say 'Hey man, I can't go 'cause I might get shot so I'm going to send my wife. Oh, and take a guitar player and a comedian with you."

Replying to Sinbad earlier this week, Clinton dismissed him as "a comedian." Her campaign referred me to Togo West, who was also on the trip and is a staunch Hillary supporter. West could not remember "sniper fire" himself, but said there was no reason to doubt the First Lady's version of events. "Everybody's perceptions are different," he told me.

Clinton made no mention of "sniper fire" in her autobiography "Living History," published in 2003, although she did say there were "reports of snipers" in the hills around the airport.

The Pinocchio Test
Clinton's tale of landing at Tuzla airport "under sniper fire" and then running for cover is simply not credible. Photographs and video of the arrival ceremony, combined with contemporaneous news reports, tell a very different story. Four Pinocchios.

1. Hey! I barely escaped some gunfire about an hour ago!
Really.

Some dudes shot it out in Bed-Stuy, barely missing me while I was sitting in a 5th floor apartment overlooking the Hudson on the Upper West Side.

They were THAT close (same City - does that count?).

Also, there was a small house fire in an unoccupied and semi-derelict property on the next block a few weeks ago. Is it any wonder I wake up sweating in the night?

14. 4 Pinocchios! Now you don't see that every day.
I feel kind of bad about this. Our memories get altered over time, but Hillary's version really seems quite at variance with the reality. But, you know, maybe she was aware that there were sniper reports and maybe she just retained that information and it colored her recollection. I bet Hillary has considered herself literally "under fire" and "sniped at" for much of her adult life and perhaps her subconscious translated this subliminally into this incident. That's my best explanation. I don't think she would consciously "lie" about something for which there is such a public record and other witnesses.

28. well, like I said, I can almost understand this one, sorta.
Now, her position on the Michigan vote being a fair election - THAT scares me!

Because that's not about an imperfect recollection of the events of one day. That is an unbalanced, unreasonable, and unconscionable viewpoint that no reasonable person could arrive at given the facts. That alone makes me think she doesn't have the judgement to be my President. Evidence of situational ethics, if you will.

32. Well, to me that MI thing is not a question of judgment, or not
being able to see reason. To me, it shows a conscious, deliberate willingness to outright lie for one's own political advantage. It shows that she has no real moral center, that everything is relative to her in terms of the truth when politics are at stake. It's a little frightening not in the fact that she's delusional, but because it's NOT delusional or mistaken or wishful thinking--it's just a deliberate lie to save her own skin. Someone like that is not fit to be President, or even Senator, really.

What is the point of exagerrating? The truth is interesting, too. It was a lovely trip and she was an excellent ambassador. Why embellish that with lies about sniper fire and running for cover??

Announcer: And now, a message from Pathological Liars Anonymous.

Tommy Flanagan: Hello, my name is Tommy Flanagan, and I'm a member of Pathological Liars Anonymous. In fact.. I'm the president of the organization!

I didn't always lie. No, when I was a kid, I told the truth. But then one day, I got caught stealing money out of my mother's purse. I lied. I told her it was homework - that my teacher told me to do it. And she got fired! Yeah, that's what happened!

After that, lying was easy for me. I lied about my age and joined the army. I was thirteen at the time. Yeah.. I went to Vietnam, and I was injured catching a mortar shell in my teeth. And they made me a three-star general! And then I got a job in journalism, writing for the National Enquire.. er, Geographic! Yeah.. I was making twenty thousand a ye.. month! In fact, I won the Pulitzer Prize that year! Yeah, that's the ticket.

And then my cousin died - Joe Louis - and I took it hard. Maybe too hard - I tried to kill myself. Yeahh.. I did kill myself! Sure! I was medically dead for a week and a half! It was a woman that brought me out of it - Indira Gandhi! Yeah, right.. And she told me about Pathological Liars Anonymous.

Oh, you'd be surprised how many famous people belong. In fact.. at one of the meetings I met my wife - Morgan Fairchild! Yes, I'm a change man now, and all because of Pathological Liars Anonymous. Why, I - I even have my picture on the cover of Newsweek magazine. Yeah. Every day! Yeah.. that's the ticket! Yeah, you betcha!

She said she had to run from the plane because she was under sniper fire. That is completely different than normal precautions for a first lady landing in a country that isn't 100% stable.

105. Sure, if the snipers are far away in the hills and there's a place behind revetments to stage the
event. The idea is, if you've got someone launching firepower at you in exposed areas, you deplane and get from said exposed areas to cover as swiftly as you can reasonably manage.

Do you think everyone in Iraq behind the wire never goes outside? They're under constant threat of mortar attack there.

That's what jersey and other barriers are for. But you've got to get BEHIND them to be sheltered from being targeted.

.... whatever.

136. You're not hearing what I am saying. You have preconceived notions and haven't
flown in there. The fire isn't coming from snipers in the proximity of say, gunfighters at the OK Corral, it's coming from very far away. It could be someone with a high powered rifle, or it could be someone with a rocket launcher.

In order to get a shot off, you have to have your target in the clear--that's why people don't stand still on tarmacs or runways.

Once you're behind a revetment, you're quite safe.

It's the same idea they use when they 'wall off' the Green Zone, as well as some of these marketplaces in Iraq. You can't hit what you can't see.

What is she doing, writing a novel?

2 years ago I visited the island of Montserrat, which has an active volcano -

IF there had been a major eruption, we COULD have been evacuated,

But THERE WASN'T AND WE WEREN'T

When I went scuba diving there, I COULD have gotten the bends, BUT I DIDN'T

I could have been attacked by a bull shark, BUT I WASN'T

I could have been left behind by my diveboat, BUT I WASN'T

When I went wreck diving inside WW II Japanese ships in Truk Lagoon in Micronesia, I could

It's bad enough that HRC engaged in extreme spinning about that trip. It is scary as hell that once caught, she then expanded the original lies even more. She is out of control at this point, so the party elders really have their work cut out for them in dealing with her.

On edit: and her bizarre, extreme behavior is damaging to the credibility of all women who want to run for political office - has anyone ever seen a male candidate act like this? Lying in the face of massive press coverage and photographs and eyewitness testimony. Abysmally pathetic!

108. Too bad the Wash Post story has been updated, eh?
Selective quotes from the WP to enhance your story? Did you check the updates in the article?

UPDATE Friday 6:45 p.m.

Lissa Muscatine, who served as Hilary Clinton's chief speechwriter in 1996 and accompanied her on the Bosnia trip, feels that I have failed to provide a full picture of what took place. She gave me her "vivid recollections" of the arrival in Tuzla, which I quote below:

I was on the plane with then First Lady Hillary Clinton for the trip from Germany into Bosnia in 1996. We were put on a C17-- a plane capable of steep ascents and descents -- precisely because we were flying into what was considered a combat zone. We were issued flak jackets for the final leg because of possible sniper fire near Tuzla. As an additional precaution, the First Lady and Chelsea were moved to the armored cockpit for the descent into Tuzla. We were told that a welcoming ceremony on the tarmac might be canceled because of sniper fire in the hills surrounding the air strip. From Tuzla, Hillary flew to two outposts in Bosnia with gunships escorting her helicopter.

UPDATE Saturday 8:45 a.m.

Gen. Nash says that I misquoted him in saying he was unaware of any "security threat" to the First Lady. While he was unaware of any "sniper threat," he now tells me there were a couple of "security concerns" that day, which he found out about after returning to his headquarters after greeting Clinton at the airport. There was a "non-specific report" of a possible truck bomb in the area. The military also had information that "some of the communications associated with the First Lady's visit were being monitored."

But by all means, keep posting the bullshit. Typical of the hate on this forum board that will permanently divide the Democrats in November no matter who the nominee is.

111. LOL! Hillary claimed she was running from the plane with her head down,
running for cover, under sniper fire. No welcome ceremony - too dangerous! Sorry, but what you posted does not defend Clinton in the slightest.

C-17s flew into Tuzla EVERY DAY. It is the workhorse American transport plane and Hillary was not flying on one for any security reason. I LMAO hearing the twisted defenses from people that don't know what the hell they're talking about.

General Nash said there was NO SNIPER THREAT. He said there were "security concerns." Guess what? There were "security concerns" when Hillary landed at Dulles Airport back in the USA after her harrowing, danger-filled trip.

Hillary lied. Deal with it in your own special way.
