...they just watch FoxNews and listen to Rush Limbaugh.

At least that's what the nay-sayers would have us believe. :eyes:

Thanks for compiling this, that must have been time-consuming.

7. The thread is misleading (cherrypicking newspapers)
People would think by reading your post that these are editorials. The Washington Post link, for example, is the opinion of some columnist whose name I'd never heard before.

You also cite newspapers that are very small, such as the Rutland Herald (what is that?).
The Wichita newspaper is not even top 100 in circulation in the US.
You cite the South Coast Today Editorial. (don't ask me).

This is a case of cherrypicking.

9. If you feel I'm cherrypicking, go start another thread showing negative editorial responses.
I listed some major newspapers in there, including the LA Times, Washington Post, New York Times, New York Post, New York Daily News, Arizona Republic, Houston Chronicle and the largest paper in New Jersey. I'm not a fucking robot, I can't look through every goddamn editorial of every paper and list 'em here. I did the best I could and in ALL the editorials I found in daily papers, none stated Obama's speech was bad. If you can find any, go right ahead and make a thread.

15. This should make you feel better: the WaPost's editorial: "A Moment of Truth"
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/03/18/AR2008031802704.html

Here's a sampling: "Mr. Obama's speech was an extraordinary moment of truth-telling. He coupled it with an appeal that this year's campaign not be dominated by distorted and polarizing debates about whether he or his opponents agree with extreme statements by supporters -- or other attempts to divide the electorate along racial lines. Far better, he argued, that Americans of all races recognize they face common economic, social and security problems. We don't agree with the way Mr. Obama described some of those problems yesterday or with some of his solutions for them. But he was right to condemn the Rev. Wright's words, was eloquent in describing the persistent challenge of race and racism in American society -- and was right in proposing that this year's campaign rise above "a politics that breeds division and conflict and cynicism."

There you go. No more cherry picking. Just another positive editorial from a major newspaper.

large and small, have weighed in and the verdict is almost uniformly positive. Oh, and The Rutland Herald is a Vermont newspaper that a lot of us Vermonters look to- particularly for their editorial page. I believe that editorial was written by Moats who's a pulitzer prize winner.

20. Indeed.
I told my husband that I have no sense for how that paper will cover things. I almost expected them to just put a little four- or five-paragraph article on the speech on their campaign coverage page on the inside of the front section. Often I've felt something has warranted major front-page coverage and then it's been downplayed. So ... long way of saying this was a nice surprise.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. And they wrote a favorable editorial and had a huge write-up summarizing the speech.

The reporter who attended the Charlotte rally was obviously blown away by him. He did a sit-down with her, and I'm sorry, but the guy just naturally exudes charm, charisma and confidence. The people interviewed after the rally were awesome, and they seem to believe that if anyone left in this race has a chance to actually work toward healing our divisions, it's Obama.

All in all, he got some really good press here today.

Edited on Wed Mar-19-08 11:45 PM by Blondiegrrl
http://www.saturdaygazettemail.com/Opinion/Editorials/200803180496

"Obama's speech is the clearest and most superb summary of America's lingering race dilemma in recent memory. It is more convincing because he does not shrink from acknowledging the nation's "original sin" of slavery, or the persistence of discrimination, segregation and constricted opportunity that prevented black Americans from realizing their pursuit of happiness, effects that are still felt today."

ETA: The above is an EDITORIAL and therefore the collective opinion of the newspaper.

was not about the race issue in america. Original message

San Diego Union Tribune: It's Over. Obama's the Nominee.
It was extremely unlikely that Hillary Clinton was going to overcome Barack Obama's lead in delegates, states and total votes and take the Democratic nomination, but Obama's speech this morning -- graceful, thoughtful, nuanced, sweeping, challenging, unprecedented -- pretty much wiped out any chance at all. It was a speech Hillary could never have given -- really, few U.S. politicians ever could have given.

I write this not just because I think this will dampen the Rev. Wright controversy. I write this because Obama did an extraordinary job of presenting himself as the candidate of "the better angels of our nature," to use the phrase from Abraham Lincoln's first inaugural address. His speech isn't just inspirational to millions of voters who are tired of cynicism and division. I think many in the political media will see it as redemptive on personal grounds. Maybe they really aren't spending their careers in swampland.

Which not-so-coincidentally is the name of Time magazine's fine national politics blog.
