The Board Suffers From Too Much Hyperbole And Too Little Nuance
Might as well use my one of my rationed posts...

As an aside I was thinking about Obama's remark about his grandmother being scared of some African Americans...

It reminds me of a chat I had on the now defunct ESPN NBA board with some African American and caucasian friends of mine...

We were discussing race and this one caucasian guy from Miami said he was driving through Liberty City one night and he was stopped at a red light... He said an African American guy was walking up to his car so he ignored the red light and hit the gas... One of my African American friends said the guy who walked up to his car might have wanted a light or he might have been getting ready to car jack him...

I think it's a class thing not a race thing... I was trying to find the part from Freakanomics where the authors wrote if you control for income there is no difference between white and black crime rates; i.e. you don't see middle class whites or African Americans jacking up 7-11s...

1. True about the crime rates...
not so much the incarceration rates, though.

8. That would be economic, as well.
Since poor whites can't afford legal counsel, either.

It's police profiling and a biased court system.

UCR bases their statistics on crimes reported, not arrests or convictions. So reports are proportionally the same, and arrests and convictions are higher among African Americans. Hence the "control" - they use UCR to explain the nature of crime, but it shines a bright spotlight on unequal protection & treatment under the law by race.
