My thoughts on why Kerry is advertising in Louisiana and Colorado
Edited on Mon May-03-04 10:12 AM by dolstein
I don't think Kerry has a realistic shot at carrying Colorado or Louisiana. And frankly, I don't think the Kerry campaign believes this either. I think the reason they have included these states in their ad buy is to convey a sense of confidence. It's the same reason why Bush decided to campaign in California and New Jersey during the final days of the 2000 campaining. They had to have known that Bush would lose in both of these states, but they wanted to covey the impression that their campaign was so confident that Bush had the election locked up that they could afford to campaign in marginal states. And they hoped that this display of confidence would move votes in the battleground states. I believe the same thing is going on here.

1. Either that or it will force Bush to campaign in those states
as well. In Bush's ad buy, he did not include either state nd now he may have to.

2.  I wouldn't write Louisiana off. They just voted in a Dem governor. (n/t)

9. With all due respect
Mary Landrieu and John Breaux are from Louisiana. And they're more conservative John Kerry is. Southern voters have a long history of electing Democrats to the Senate while voting against northern Democrats in the presidential election.

16. Oh, certainly
I'm aware of Senator Breaux's position relative position to Kerry on the political spectrum. And dimly recall that Mary Landrieu got better results in her election when distancing herself from * and Republican-light positions during the campaign.

That said, my original post really only meant to emphasize the inferred point from an earlier post that Louisianans are not incapable of voting Democratic. A Democratic governor and 2 Senators does not mean LA will go Kerry, but it *does* lend more hope than can be found in other states.

18. Well, I live here
and a lot of pugs in this state are fed up with *. I expect to see a Kerry victory. I also expect Mitch Landrieu, Mary's little brother, to be Governor after Kathleen.

4. Kerry has a shot in Colorado, especially with a competitive Senate race

2000 results:
Bush 883,745 50.75%
Gore 738,227 42.39%
Nader 91,434 5.25%

It looks within reach to me...

5. Maybe, but a recent NC poll has bush collapsing there
and if he's begining to take a dive in North Carolina, maybe similar things are going on in CO and LA? Maybe?

I think by the time the campaign gains full steam, the little moron is going to be scrambling to hold on to states he once took for granted.

7. I am in northern California & I just saw 2 Bush ads on CNN
Basically they blamed Kerry for troops not having body armor and proper equipment in Iraq.

I suppose the woman who told me Clinton-Gore lost jobs will believe that Kerry is responsible for the lack of preparation for Iraq.

I want to cry.

12. Are you kidding?
No one ever wants to cry. This tripe has run here for two months and IT is still even with Sen. Kerry. $50 million in ads and nothing changed. IT will lose. IT has nothing to run on and IT is history.

8. My thoughts on why Kerry is advertising in Lousiana and Colorado:
Because John Kerry is going to win Louisiana and Colorado.

And West Virginia, and Arkansas, and New Hampshire, and Ohio, and Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, and Michigan, and Florida, and Missouri, and Nevada, and New Mexico, and Arizona, and Oregon, and Washington, and and and.

But he can't do it without money, and he can't raise money after July.

So contribute today, to both Kerry AND the DNC.

10. He was born in Colorado
That's why these particular ads are included there. People have a way of perking up at any mention of their home state or hometown. It's a good way to at least get Coloradans listening to him. And I think he's more in play in Louisiana than some might think. These are great ads!

11. It's interesting
They may have internal polling that tells them these states are more competitive then it might seem.

If Bush loses these states, then forget about it. But that he may even be in trouble in these states is a sign of hot water for him. He is also in trouble in Arizona.

I think Bush is in desperation mode already, he is doing a bus tour in Ohio and it is very early for this type of campaigning for a sitting president according to some news reports I read.

13. Kerry may be competitive in Colorado
Bush got just over 50% there. So, it will depend on how well Nader does. If Nader's campaign is struggling or he doesn't campaign hard I think Kerry has a shot at Colorado.

I'm lest optimistic about Louisiana. Even conservative local politicians struggle to get into congress so I doubt the more liberal John Kerry can win there. But, black turnout is so important in that state and if there is very high turnout in that consituency than Kerry can win.

I agree that part of the reason is to show that Kerry is doing well and is confident. But, at the same time there is some electoral merit to his decision.

14. Fits in with making Clark VP....
Breaux and Landrieu both were for Clark.....Breaux said that Clark would bring coattails to his state....

Also, Clark had a very strong organization in Colorado.

This fits.

21. I hope this is a sign that
Kerry and Senate and Congressional candidates will work together. We need to win back the Senate and gain some House seats to help Kerry be an effective President.
