He calls it "A More Perfect Union."

I'm thinking more along the lines of the "Mustard and Relish" speech.

Are the names of speeches supposed to be "quoted" or italicized?

4. Titles of speeches go in quotes.
Edited on Tue Mar-18-08 10:30 PM by QC
The general rule is that titles of full-length works are underlined or italicized and titles of shorter works go in quotes.

8. Yeah, but I thought the definition of a shorter work was
that it's a part of a larger work. I guess the campaign, or the term of office, could be a larger work.

That's where I got confused.

49. "Let Freedom Ring" is the other "chorus" of the speech, the one at the end
the fact that King put that at the end also suggests he saw that as having more "staying power", but you don't really control what part of a speech captures the imagination.

There's a copy of a draft here at BU (where he got his PhD) that has "Let Freedom Ring" at the top of the first page. Then again that could have just been something he scribbled down while writing it so he'd remember to put it in later.

32. I think of it as "The Speech," similar to how folks in the SF Bay Area think of "The Catch."
I have this image in my mind of Charlie Brown kicking Lucy Van Pelt through the goal post .

Those of you familiar with Peanuts know that Lucy always snatches away the football just before Charlie can kick it.

Not this time!

40. "A More Perfect Union" works best for me too
I am biased against american (French's) mustard and I have even less fondness for pickles in any format. The very thought of biting into a mustard and relish sandwich makes me....well there has been enough of that in this thread. If I had been a member of Ashley's family I would have donated the spreads and went with plain bread. (I remember sugar and butter bread though...not from any necessity but because years and years ago I found such stuff quite yummy!)

77. That's actually somewhat appropriate, isn't it?
If only in that Nixon's relationship to the dog, Checkers, is something he -- similar to Obama's relationship with the Pastor -- cannot simply abandon for political expediency.

But the name lacks an Obama flavor.
