Obama's Great Civil Rights Speech
When the issues of the country are national security, war, economy, healthcare and illegal immigration

I do not think it will help him win the presidency.

By making him defend the views of Wright and the progress of civil rights they may well have made him the black candidate.

The polls, and more importantly in PA and the remaining states.

3. Guess you missed the part about how politicians exploit race-based anger
and nothing gets done on the health care, education and economic fronts.

5. others might think that he showed tremendous leadership
by addressing one of the underpinning issues of all times with honesty and forthrightness. Rather than shy away he faced the issue head on and also showed how focus on this issue diverts from the real issues that affect all americans.
I mean some people might have seen that.

6. You are wrong. Obama spoke to the economic, healthcare,
illegal immigration and war issues. Racism and all the other petty concerns (like gay marriage) that divide us are our biggest national security issues. A nation that is divided will fall.

Obama's speech today answered the questions that I had about him. It was as if he had been reading my posts on DU about his church, his Kansan/Hawaiian grandmother and all my other posts questioning what he has been doing and saying. I am still an Edwards supporter first, but I can vote for Obama with confidence that he has the understanding of all Americans to be a great president.

I believe this was the greatest speech by any American politician since Kennedy's inaugural speech. I do not consider Martin Luther King to have been a politician. He was a religious and moral leader not a politician.

11. the country will not fall
as he pointed out in the beginning of his speech there has always been divisions in this country (and all countries).

It was a great speech and addressed the progress and frustrations of the civil rights movement from all sides.

King's speeches and movement did lead to political change.

7. Don't worry ...
he'll have the opportunity to address all of those issues (in depth) in numerous speeches between now and November. ;) As for today, he took an issue that needed to be addressed and did so. How very presidential.

12. If it can be put to bed now, and move on to the presidential campaign
I don't know if the media will.

He did call out the media for their feeding frenzy, we will see how they respond.

8. Wrong, JFK needed to do a "Catholic" speech, Romney a Mormon one,. Obama needed to do this
and he did it very very well
