Obama's Big Speech on Race Tomorrow
Loyalty is a virtue and a vice. I can't tell you how dearly it cost me, in grade school, to stick with the New Kids on the Block well past their prime. Now I know better.

Right now everyone is listening. After Ferraro's PR fart and Wright's brimstone bit, and given the big possibility of a woman or a black man in the White House, everyone is keenly tuned in to the social justice issues at the very heart of the progressive mission, and not everyone is handling it well. Just have a look at the comments threads to Fox News stories about Wright and you'll get a glimpse of some of the hysterical fear and judgment people are feeling. This is a huge chance for the Democratic Party to step up and lead the nation forward, and not into spiraling contention, against the most deeply divisive forces in society.

I know there are Obama supporters and Clinton supporters in this community that are for or against Barack Obama so intensely that they already know how they will react to the speech Obama says he will give tomorrow in Philadelphia, in which he will address race and prejudice. They have already decided they don't believe anything Obama says, or they have already decided that everything Obama says is gold.

But I also know that many of my fellow Democrats, and many Independents and Republicans, no matter how passionately they support their candidate, realize now that we are facing something bigger than this nomination and bigger even than this presidential election. They realize that the call for peace and equality among all people in this nation is just as righteous now as it was when Lincoln freed the slaves, when women won the right to vote, and when Dr. King inspired the march for social justice.

We cannot wait for the Democratic Convention before uniting on matters so dear to the progressive vision. We cannot wait for super-delegates to tell us who will face McCain. We cannot afford to be fractured on civil rights when so much anger and confusion is boiling up, right now, and threatens to further divide the country on racial lines.

If Obama speaks well tomorrow -- if he faithfully captures and extends the core progressive message on social equality -- we absolutely must unite in supporting that message and the principles it stands on, even if we do not support the messenger. This is neither a time for enshrining Obama and launching vicious attacks at his detractors, nor a time for character attacks and cynicism. Both Obama and Clinton, and the great progressive leaders before them, are unconditionally committed to the principles of social equality. We should speak with one voice in commending any person -- Democrat, Republican, or otherwise -- who serves these principles, even if we don't want that person to be President.

4. This hysteria talks to the immaturity of US voters.
Edited on Mon Mar-17-08 05:40 PM by tabatha
We have caused unbelievable destruction in Iraq, tortured innocent people, yet some people get in a tizz because a preacher expresses his anger (mostly correct) in a sermon. He never harmed anybody, physically or verbally.

Yet, we have these cries of hatred, disgust for someone expressing despair at what whites have done.

It is beyond hypocritical - and if Obama loses because of this, then it is not a good reflection of this society.

25. I don't think...
the people in the world out there are nearly as screwed as the screaming fanatics here. This is all targeted for a certain audience, and I don't think the folks that are being swayed by this needed any help. I think there are more of us, than there are of them. :hi:

15. many pundits are hailing this as Obama's Big Test.
On the contrary... it's America's test. It's our test.

We'll see if we pass or fail.

18. I agree.
I know that Obama's pastor doesn't speak for him because Obama sounds nothing like his pastor in the way he's carried his campaign. It stretches belief to think he's some angry black nationalist in the mold of Farrakhan.

21. Campbell Brown...
...surprised me tonight. There was a rabid black woman - writer for the Washington TIMES - hello - who went on and on with rightwing talking points about how Obama must explain, in great detail, exactly what "hate talk" he agrees with and what he does not - especially since he hasn't addressed it yet.

I thought for a moment that I would lose it. I started screaming at the television. The dogs went whimpering off into a corner. They're only now joining me around my feet. It's safe again.

Anyway, Campbell Brown, very firmly, I thought, asked this woman, (paraphrasing) "do you really, seriously, believe that Barack Obama intends to further Rev. Wright's agenda if he wins the presidency, and if you don't - if the answer is no - then why is this an issue?"

DAMN GOOD freaking question that I wish more of them would ask. Good grief.

20. So true!
The fact that Obama even has to do this does not speak well of this country. I hope that this is a learning and growing experience for everyone.

23. Yep. But...
...he could nail it. He could make the speech to end all speeches. We know he's capable of it. We know he could elevate us all out of this cesspool and hose us all off with one opening shot... because it can't end there. What he should do is open up a dialogue - no, not campaign on it, not that he should or must bring it up again and again - no way - but say that now is the time for us all to face this down, and begin to heal. Talk straight, honestly, to the point... he could end this thing if he nails it.

I pray he does.
