co worker thinks Obama turned away during
National Anthem. I had to show him some pics someone posted here showing several others including both Bushes doing the same thing, and his jaw dropped. He couldn't believe others had not put their hand over their heart during the National Anthem. I'm just posting this since I think even though we know it's still not clear to others. It suprised me he would think that, but that's what being said by the other side. I would love Obama to have a commercial showing others just standing also. You assume something is debunked when others are ill informed.

1. True, we do assume they know it has been debunked
I am in Ohio and the past week I have heard:

1. He is a Muslim because they claim they heard Hillary say it - HOLD IT BEFORE YOU FLAME ME - I know she didn't say it, but they perceive it that way.
2. He won't take the pledge of allegiance
3. He was born in some foreign country and isn't American
4. He has a terrible health plan - this one came from a Hillary supporter - I explained their plans were not that different and asked her to please take the time to look up the facts.
5. He shouldn't be President because he would have voted against the war when everyone else was for it - this came from someone who was totally against the war from the start...I AM LIKE WHAT THE HELL???? That same person was extremely upset when the war vote was taken...I am beginning to think he has a mental problem... arghhhhhhhhhhhh at the people who do not listen, watch or read past the headlines!

Now, I have been collecting and drafting emails preparing myself for the onslaught of the ProMcBush emails...going to fire out debunk emails to each and everyone that sends me one...I actually have them stored on my computer filed per each possible accusation.

18. This is what the Democrats are always up against. It's infuriating.
The mainstream media pushes this crap because the corporations that own them want Republicans in office.

Sometimes I get so mad at people's stupidity I figure that they deserve the leaders they "elect" - but then I remember that they're taking me down with them.

2. My co-worker won't vote for him because of his name, and cause she's convinced he went to a madrassa
True story. I tried to correct her, but she wasn't having any of it.

3. it's unbelievable.
now with this national enquirer story. What do you do when things are just made up and printed in mass production? could the news media call them on this? could he sue? This just seems like the most vile thing that could be done, even worse than the swiftboating.

8. You're not exactly helping by continuing to spread this meme across the searchable interwebs.
You knew that, right?

17. Because the mainstream media is aiming for a different audience
They spread smears, but not below-the-belt smears on patriotism. This is the kind of thing that happens just-barely-above-the-radar, sneaky enough to be "gossip," but not verifiable enough to be "news." Still, everybody, including reporters, know about it and it's often reflected in coverage.

This kind of tactic is what's referred to as "The Poison Pill" and it's classic, old-school politics. It works, sometimes. It certainly worked against John McCain in South Carolina, and to a less campaign-killing effect, Barack Obama in Ohio.

"The Poison Pill" works well in the short-run, historically. But it's a long way until Pennsylvania, and I think the Kitchen Sink strategy is in its "last throes."

the black guy. It is possible, although very ugly.

20. I have a coworker who won't vote for him
Edited on Sun Mar-09-08 10:31 PM by RamboLiberal
Cause she just couldn't vote for someone named Hussein. And an older woman who thinks he'll do too much for blacks - do you see all those blacks in his audience.

I'm surrounded by a bunch of wingnuts - many of them blue collar(idiots!). But a lot of them are less than thrilled with McCain. My hope is that if Obama is the nominee they will sit home and not vote for McCain. But I'm betting they'd hold their nose and vote for McCain if Hillary was the nom.

I'm convinced a good portion of the voters are friggin' hopeless.

I see the email crap coming in, much of it from our clients with the RW crap. I finally got a chance in another context where someone sent an email about state police cracking down on speeders that was Snopes debunked to tell them to check emails and remind them a lot of political emails are making the rounds that are totally false and to check Snopes or even check with me. Amazing even though I remind them several times a year they still fall for the did you hear emails!

Doubt if it made a difference - but if even one.

13. Just can't resist can you?
1. OP doesn't say coworker was a Hillary supporter.
2. Even if coworker is Hillary supporter, that's one out of millions.
3. Republicans are more educated on average than Dems. Does that make them smarter? Poor people tend to have lower levels of education. If Hillary's supporters are less educated than Obama's, perhaps she just carries poorer demographics. Your elitism is very unDemocratic.
4. It's rightwingers who push this nonsense about Obama just like they've been pushing nonsense about the Clintons for years. Difference is, DU seems to have largely succumbed to the lies about Clinton.

7. I think it's easier just to remind them to look around next time they're at the ballgame.
Edited on Sun Mar-09-08 09:48 PM by VolcanoJen
That usually seems to work in debunking this particular internet meme.

Edit: I also like to add, "If there was some photograph of Obama sitting down during the National Anthem, I'd be concerned. Especially at a ballgame."

11. One of my co-workers informed me last week that OMG! Obama is
a closeted Muslim! He won't say the Pledge of Allegiance and he was caught celebrating a Muslim holiday! (the latter, I believe, was a reference to the photos of Obama in Somalian garb). Same co-worked also claimed he "saw this on CNN." My guess is that said co-worker was doing bong hits and was only half paying attention when CNN did a piece debunking the Obama Muslim myth. Unfortunately, the idiot picked up on the wrong parts of the piece.

America is chock full of ignorance fools.

24. Isn't that crazy? Why aren't our schools teaching the US Constitution?
Rather than making kids stand and recite the pledge, why not take that time for civics education?

Anyway, here you go:

My larger point being, all too often these phony, pumped-up "patriots" don't have any clue as to what this country is actually supposed to be about.
