Why is North Carolina not considered a big state, and New Jersey is?
Both N.C. and N.J. have 15 electoral votes. So if Obama wins N.C., isn't that considered a big state win if Hillary is allowed to claim that N.J. is a big state win? Why is the media buying into this Hillary spin about big states?

For that matter, how come no one considers Virginia, Colorado, Missouri, and Wisconsin crucial swing states that could elect the president? If you combine Colorado and Virginia's EC votes, they are more than Pennsylvania. They are more than Ohio. Obama doesn't have to win Ohio in the GE to win the presidency. If he carries states like VA and CO, he will win. So all this crap about Hillary winning big states is only pure spin. At least Obama has the ability to win states like CO and VA, while Hillary would have no room for error. She'd have to win big states to even have a chance, whereas Obama could go to other states and pick up electoral votes where no Democrat has done before.

1. Any state that can produce a Bruce Springsteen and a James Taylor is a
REAL big state in my book.

8. Hey there, JerseygirlCT. Good to see you too, dammit.
We had "I'm On Fire" on the other night from some of the earlier Springsteen recordings. Wow. What a song.

And I just can't get enough of James Taylor. I'll be humming "How Sweet It Is" from beyond the grave.

14. Have to agree. He gives off a vibe. I like some of the lesser-known stuff
also. There's a tune on GORILLA, 'Lighthouse," that just knocks me out.

5. Please....Hillary decides which states count.
She`ll make her final decision at a later date. Right now she`s busy being fitted for a sparkling tiara and an ermine collar.

13. WA is the same size as MA
You are absolutely right. And GA and LA used to be swing states too, as is IA. It just shows how absolutely brain dead our media is, or intimidated if Scarborough is right about interest groups pressuring network heads.

15. Because it isn't in the Northeast.
Honestly, the only reason that MI is suddenly an important "big" state is that Hillary needs us. I don't recall being of much interest to Democratic presidential candidates when we needed them.

18. Oh please
McCain is going to win North Carolina.

If you combine Pennsylvania and Ohio they are more than a lot of combinations. If you combine Florida to that and you start to see the massive amounts of math that Obama lacks. Throw in a state like New Jersey and it just adds to the math.

20. Then why don't we just have primaries in states where we might win, or definitely
can win? Why not just pretend that all of the other states don't exist, and that no Democrat there deserves a voice (through delegates) in choosing our nominee? Only problem is, no one can predict with 100% certainty which states are "important" for us in the future, or who would win them--too many variables. But I think you're right, it's ridiculous to allow people in "unimportant" states to be allowed to add delegates to the nomination process and express their will. I think maybe they shouldn't have Reps or Senators, either, frankly.

21. You are right. NC will go for McCain no matter which of our leading
candidates gets the nomination.

Just look over the records of our two U.S. Senators, Dole and Burr, if you want to get a good feel for what we're up against down here.

Sure Obama may win the Democratic primary, but the party hardly has a lock on the state. We nominated Harvey Gantt, a well-qualified African American, twice, and who won the elections? Jesse Helms.

I resent the wholesale attacks which are sometimes made on the South and Southerners here on DU. On the other hand, not enough credit is given to what we are up against down here. And the thought that either Clinton or Obama is going to carry the state would funny if the situation weren't so sad. If lightening were to strike and John Edwards were to get the nomination, we would have a hard fight on our hands getting him to win in the state.

Unfortunately, the views held by us Democrats are not shared by the public at large here in North Carolina. Things may be getting better, but they have a long way to go.

22. Mccain will probably, I think Clinton carried it the second time
Many Jesse Helms peope live here that spells McCain , the state usually goes rep at the national level, but democrat at the governors race, however I do know Carter carried North Carolina. Clinton didn't carry the state of N.C the first time but may have the last 4 years, can't remember. However some are so angry at the republican party and Bush they could very well go re publican this year.

19. Who is saying this?
You say Clinton is - but is anyone else? Swing states are states that have historically been close AND have a lot of EVs. And a "state" is a state. It is not a combination of states.

25. It might go blue if Obama is the nominee.
Take a look at the electoral map when Jimmy Carter won. That might be the way Democrats win in 2008.
