(When I write in my for lack of a better word "Diary" I choose a family member that's no longer with us to write to. I wanted to share this one with you folks because it's about politics and I'm curious, what would YOU say about everything that's happening if you had the chance for a long talk over coffee?)
Pappy,
I wish you were here, things have been so depressing lately. Positive thoughts and feeling have become anathema to many, and the country is still at war.
People all around us are struggling, fighting to keep their heads afloat.
Just a couple of weeks ago we had a family near us get burned out of their home, they had let their home insurance lapse because needed to choose between food and bills. Mom, Dad and five kids are now staying in the local hotel with no hope of reimbursement.
The good news is after three years of decline, the government has FINALLY decided to acknowledge we have economic issues. However I feel it's too little too late. I remember sitting in your living room and listening to the stories of the Depression, I don't want my children to have to experience that.
I'm very active in learning about Politics this year, almost obsessive. We are at a crossroads for our future, with three paths ahead of us. The sad and horrible thing is, instead of seizing the day like you always told us to, we have Dems attacking Dems. Nastiness and insults are now considered the way to be.
I can't tell who is with what party anymore, Pappy. I can't tell who stands for what. I know we can't have the Republicans in the whitehouse, but I've started questioning to myself "Who is actually a Republican anymore? Who is a Democrat?"
The party lines have become so blurred they almost don't exist.
When I ask people, what they feel the difference is they actually have to think about it. The first thing that comes out of their mouths is the war. The second is Choice. After that...they stumble a little over equal rights and then fizzle.
We had a few good people that were drummed out of the running that I honestly feel would have done much to turn us around, but once again because the general population wants a good "show" instead of a good life...you know how it goes.
I'm afraid, afraid for my children and our future. I know that with how strong our family is, we've been through hard times and survived- we can do it again. But what about families that aren't strong?
You can't even tell these families to turn to their faith, whatever that faith might be. Agnostic, Atheist, or believer- beliefs are another foaming at the mouth issue that makes me so sad. Didn't our ancestors fight for religious rights and freedoms to believe what they wish without persecution? Even if it was to not believe in anything?
If you mention it at all, the sneers and insults begin to fly. It's terrible, the very same persecution this country was founded on to escape is right here at our front doorstep.
I just want us to make the right choice for our country and as a people, we have no other options.
Maybe it's better for you that you're sleeping, I think our country right now would break your heart.
