Clinton's close friend and fundraiser Sheriff Harry Lee: Racist to the core.
Edited on Wed Mar-05-08 09:55 PM by chascarrillo
Quotes from former Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee:

"If there are some young blacks driving a car late at night in a predominantly white neighborhood, they will be stopped. There's a pretty good chance they're up to no good. It's obvious two young blacks driving a rinky-dink car in a predominantly white neighborhood -- I'm not talking about on the main thoroughfare, but if they're on one of the side streets and they're cruising around -- they'll be stopped."

"I'm going to catch that bastard, and when I catch him, he is going to be black. I just don't give a damn what people think of me anymore. If that was their daughter and we weren't doing that, they would be on our ass."

When residents of an all-black neighborhood in Avondale complained about police brutality, Lee pulled all deputies from the neighborhood.

Notably, after Hurricane Katrina, Sheriff Lee sent his deputies to assist the Gretna PD prevent evacuees from New Orleans to cross the Crescent City Connection Bridge into Jefferson Parish.

-----

Harry Lee hosted a private fundraiser for Hillary Clinton in May. Hillary Clinton was in attendance at the fundraiser.

Both Clintons are longtime friends of Sheriff Lee.

Says something about a person that they keep friends like this, no?

-----

Edit to add:

The white-flight suburbs around New Orleans are in many ways worse. During the 1980s, Jefferson Parish sheriff Harry Lee famously ordered special scrutiny for any black people traveling in white sections of the parish. "It's obvious," Lee said, "that two young blacks driving a rinky-dink car in a predominantly white neighborhood? They'll be stopped."

The New Orleans Gambit newspaper reported that 1994, “after two black men died in the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center within one week, Lee faced protests from the black community and responded by withdrawing his officers from a predominantly black neighborhood. ‘To hell with them,’ he'd said. ‘I haven't heard one word of support from one black person.’”

The Gambit also reported in April of this year that in Jefferson Parish officers were found to be using as target practice what critics referred to as “a blatantly racist caricature” of a Black male. Sheriff Lee laughed when presented with the charges. "I'm looking at this thing that people say is offensive," he says. "I've looked at it, I don't find it offensive, and I have no interest in correcting it."

These accusations of “target practice” gained force a few weeks later with the May 31 killing of 16-year-old Antoine Colbert, who was behind the wheel of a stolen pickup truck with two other teens. 110 shots were fired into the truck, killing Colbert and injuring his passengers. In response to criticism from Black ministers over the incident, Lee responded “they can kiss my ass.”

8. You aren't outraged by this?
"Also absent from the ceremony were Lee's longtime friends former President Bill Clinton and now imprisoned, former Gov. Edwin Edwards. A tape-recorded phone call from Edwards, offered an eloquent tribute and farewell to a lifelong friend, was played for the crowd, while a letter from Clinton also was read."

32. He was there, on video...
just not in person. That said, this fundraiser Hillary attended is not only deplorable, but is yet another of the many reasons I don't support her. I do hope she denounces this racist asshole wholeheartedly.

However, that won't stop me from accusing Obama supporters of faux outrage over this issue, when they bring it up. Tit for tat, as it were.

Wow. "If that was their daughter..." implying that all young black men are rapists, of course. I haven't heard talk like this in 45 years. It is disheartening to realize there are still pockets of this kind of hate.

the purview of African Americans and therefore consider the threat of violence against women to be a "racial stereotype." So that kind of thing doesn't only happen there...it also happens here.

The McClurkin thing was used because it got the gay community to side with Clinton. Most of the black community already sides with Obama.

11. Harry Lee orders videotaping gatherings of young men in high crime neighborhoods
Harry Lee orders videotaping gatherings of young men in high crime neighborhoods
By Christopher Tidmore, Political Columnist
November 27, 2006

At a press conference on November 21, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee said he would take "extreme measures" to fight the rising homicide rate. Murders in that Parish are up 83% over last year.

Lee who said he doesn't plan to target blacks, but "bad guys," has designated fifteen of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Jefferson, most of which reside on the West Bank, to begin an aggressive program of videotaping groups of young men on street corners to detect drug activity.

The plan according to Lee includes mounting cameras in armored vehicles and patrol cars, as well as positioning them in high-crime areas. The images would go to a master tape, so, Lee said, "we know who's there."

The Sheriff noted that some might consider the actions unconstitutional. He explained, "If the three of us were standing on a street corner, we would be offended if a police car came up and started videotaping us. We would be offended. I don't give a damn. I'm going to do it."

15. From NPR's "All Things Considered"
Since Hurricane Katrina, murders in Jefferson Parish have doubled, the majority of them black-on-black killings. The sheriff tried, in vain, to explain his intended get-tough tactics the next day at a press conference inside his gray, fortress-like headquarters.

"We know where the problem areas are. If we see some black guys on the corner milling around, we would confront them," he said.

“Barack Obama’s Pastor is a “Total Hater”" from Atlas Shrugs.

Obama’s Pastor sounds more like a hate spewing imam. I am shocked this hasn’t gotten real media play (oh yeah, it’s Obama.) The more you peel back the layers of the Obama onion, the more rotten it is at its core. Obama’s checkered resume.

is anti-Semitic and anti-Catholic, etc. Just a lot of RW memes against individual and groups of progressives.

Wright says that the US is racist. I think many people would agree. We might also agree that it is homophobic and sexist. He also says it is imperialist: is he wrong? Have we not colonized Iraq?

21. I'm curious about the source material, though.
And I wonder which, of those Wright statements on that page, you disagree with. Is the US racist? Is it imperialist?

I am not especially religious although I was raised as a Jew. Despite this, I have a real soft spot for the liberation theology that used to be taught in Latin America in the Catholic Church and the way it has been appropriated by African American churches in the US. Those churches, it seems to me, preach real sermon on the mount type Christianity, and Obama's church is notable for its message of empowerment and its very progressive attitudes toward women, LGBT, and race issues. It is really the best kind of religiosity in America (alongside, I would say, the Quakers), and name-calling, when it works so hard for such progressive causes, really disheartening.

BTW, that Jewish identity of mine makes me particularly prickly of links that say that Soros, another progressive Jew, is "anti-Semitic" because he (or MoveOn) has the temerity to question the Likud Party's version of Zionism.

Harry Lee, Outspoken Louisiana Sheriff, Dies at 75

By ADAM NOSSITER
Published: October 2, 2007

NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 1 — Sheriff Harry Lee, a wide-girthed lawman in the suburbs of New Orleans who became an outspoken voice for hostility to this city and a magnet for the anger of its black citizens, died Monday in Jefferson Parish. He was 75.

Sheriff Lee, who was in his seventh term in Jefferson Parish, just west of New Orleans, had been battling leukemia for months. His death was announced by his office.

In a state peopled with outlandish political figures, Sheriff Lee easily held his own, a blunt-talking, 350-pound son of Chinese immigrants who ruled his vast domain in the suburbs for decades while proudly consorting with mobsters and infuriating the city at his doorstep with pronouncements about black criminality.

Sheriff Lee always vigorously denied he was a racist. But with his aggressive — and loudly announced — policing of blacks who dared to cross the parish line from New Orleans into Jefferson, he seemed to give voice to a heavily white jurisdiction that sent the Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke to the State Legislature in 1989. This constituency had voted with its feet decades earlier by abandoning the black-dominated city.

30. According to the New York Times, yes.
NEW ORLEANS, May 19 — Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, who has cast herself as an ally of African-Americans in rebuilding this city, this weekend accepted fund-raising assistance from a family friend who is controversial with many black and white victims of Hurricane Katrina.

...

Sheriff Lee was a host committee member for a fund-raiser here Friday night for Mrs. Clinton’s presidential campaign. The event, which the senator attended, was closed to the news media. A Clinton campaign spokeswoman declined to comment on Mrs. Clinton’s views of Sheriff Lee’s actions in 2005 or on his fund-raising support.

Phone messages left for Sheriff Lee were not returned. A Clinton adviser declined to discuss his role, citing the personal nature of his relationship with both Clintons.

The article was from last May, when the event happened.

I have posted a few times about the "spade work" comment by Hillary Clinton, saying it was dirty politics. I don't want to believe that she panders to racists, but the article in the NYT clearly indicates that she does.

I am sorry to find that my worst impressions of the Clintons seem to be justified.
