Finally, Obama faces tough questions from the press. Reacts with paranoia, walks out.
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Led by the Chicago press corps that has covered Obama for years, the candidate today faced a barrage of questions in what turned out to be a contentious news conference.

Questions centered on why his campaign had denied that a meeting occurred between his chief economic advisor and Canadian officials as well as questions on his relationship with Tony Rezko, a Chicago land developer and fast food magnate, now on trial for corruption charges.

Obama claimed that when he had first denied the meeting between Austan Goolsbee and any members of the Canadian administration he provided "the information that had at the time."

He added, "Nobody reached out to the Canadians to try to reassure them. They reached out, unbeknownst to the rest of us; They reached out to Mr. Goolsbee, who provided them with a tangible conversation and repeated what we've said on the campaign trail."

When did the meeting take place? Why did the Canadian officials reach out? Did Goolsbee not come forward right away and admit the meeting to Campaign Manager David Plouffe and Obama when both denied it last week? These are questions that went unanswered as the press conference was cut short.

Much of the back and forth, though, between reporters and Obama was about his relationship with Tony Rezko, with reporters demanding to know why new details were emerging from the case though Obama and his staff had claimed they had been forthright with all the details.

Obama and Carol Marin, political editor at NBC5 in Chicago and columnist at the Chicago Sun-Times, tangled over how up front Obama had been about Rezko. Obama cut off her line of questioning, saying that Marin's questions were personally motivated.

snip/

Toward the end of the press conference, the question of Goolsbee's meeting was raised again. Obama answered curtly and then walked out after a staffer called last question. The press erupted with shouts, but Obama continued to walk out.

He paused only to say, "Come on guys; I answered like eight questions. We're running late.”

Hillary is not responsible for BILL's behavior. BILL is responsible for Bill's behavior.

304. If Hillary could control her own husband, then I would assume she had married a wimp...
and wasn't confident enough in her own self to marry someone who was equal to her. Had that been the case, I wouldn't expect her to be able to run the country.

FWIW, I don't like Hillary or Obama for president, but, as happens far to often, I'll hold my nose and vote for the Democratic nominee in November, which ever one it is.

323. NO ONE can CONTROL another person's behavior.
Edited on Tue Mar-04-08 08:04 PM by Triana
The ONLY person's behavior Mrs. Clinton can or SHOULD be expected to control is HER OWN. Holding HER responsible for ANYONE else's behavior is both ignorant and grossly unfair.

It's a typical ABUSERS attitude.

EXAMPLE: Is a woman whose husband BEATS HER TO A PULP because she didn't fold a sheet correctly expected to CONTROL her husband's behavior? Is she RESPONSIBLE for his behavior?

NO!

SHE IS NOT.

She is ONLY responsible for her OWN behavior (ie: whether she stays around to put up with any more of that).

SHE CANNOT control HIM. PERIOD.

What an absolutely IGNORANT attitude that is for you to have. And furthermore, it hasn't jack SHIT to do with whether she can run a country or not. How utterly assinine of you to think it does.

BILL CLINTON is responsible for his behavior - NOT Hillary. And holding that ASSumption up as an EXCUSE that she isn't qualified to be President is just that - an EXCUSE. And an ignorant ABUSESR'S excuse to boot.

There may be OTHER reasons she is not qualified -- but THAT is not one of them.

327. Thank you - it's ALWAYS the womans' fault...
..no matter what the husband/father/son - whoever does, the woman is to blame (as IF she could ever control anyone else's behavior - and any sane person won't even try - she'd concentrate instead on her own).

NEWSFLASH: NO ONE CAN CONTROL SOMEONE ELSE'S BEHAVIOR. Expecting them to (or to even try) is ignorant. One can protect themselves and others from the behavior of another (by putting in place severe consequences for it or setting boundaries) but they ultimately cannot CHANGE or control someone else's behavior.

Otherwise they would be focusing on Bill jumping in bed with the dictator of Kazakhstan and Hillary's tax returns and Hillary's White House papers and Hillary issuing the same reassurance to Canada and Hillary's campaign manager being an unethical union buster who works side by side with McCain's campaign manager. The list goes on and on and on.

320. Thank you
I'm not fond of Hillary as a candidate, but the sexism stinks. And, Obama doesn't have to play "the gender card"- the press, and the electorate, share the same perspective about gender discrimination that fish have about water. The contempt of women is completely invisible. Actually, kind of funny, don't you think? Really, one of the brighter parts of the day. Did you hear the one about the woman who...ha, ha, ha, :headbang:sorry I just can't help it...:applause: :applause: God that's so funny I just can't even finish it. But, just kidding, you know what I mean. These light moments really cheer me up! :toast:

This bias is invisible because everyone knows that men are awesome. I mean, really, REALLY awesome. :headbang: And women are...the opposite. Definitely not awesome, that's for sure. Ask anybody...:patriot: :patriot: :patriot:

Earlier in the campaign I remember the question being asked over and over- is America ready for a woman president? If America was really a land of equal opportunity, a woman wouldn't have to have been married to a president to get on the ballot.

He has the sub commitee on Europe.

Kerry and Biden runs the NE Asia commitees that handles Afghanistan.

The only real connection there is that NATO is under the Europe commitee - but they were present in the NE Asia meetings for the purpose of Afghanistan.

Its a severe misrepresentation of his duties and responsibilities, as far as I can tell.

Now, why his committee had no meetings (I have only heard that they had no meeting on Afghanistan, but it might be no meetings at all, so I won't contest that), I have no idea. I am not sure what requirements there is for such meetings.

But, you can get off the hook now, I think.

for me. Hell I haven't even chosen one of the two to support yet. (My primary is over and my candidate is out.) I can just see him as Pres. on a overseas trip, tired of questions and coming up with that line.

He does need to answer the Rezko questions fully now before some repukes start spending millions to get to the bottom of it.

312. just curious
how many questions should he answer before its considered enough?

10? 50? 100? Until there are no more?

How long should he stay to answer questions?

10 minutes? 30? Until there are no more?

It would be one thing if he answered no questions, or wouldn't not answer at all on Rezko, but my understanding is he both answered questions and answered at least one on Rezko.

But you tell me, what's the magic number for how many questions you have to answer before you aren't labeled as "running" when you say you have to go.

Yes he is out of his league. His supporters will regret nominating him because the Right Wing wackos will never let Obama be the President. Nominating him is the best that can happen to McCain.Somehow his supporters are mesmerized by his eloquence, but that is not enough to being an effective President.

both stories have grown legs with the press. His pal Rezko, which he refuses to talk about, and Nafta which he and advisor totally refuse to come clean. When will Obama supporters realize that they are being duped. If you want to blame anyone, blame your candidate, he is the one involved in both these messes. Try putting the blame where it belongs. Edited on Tue Mar-04-08 01:53 PM by plantwomyn
"It wasn't me, it's one of my supporters ". Doesn't seem like the Canadians were aware of that to me.
When will Obama be held responsible for his advisers? When they REPRESENT of OUR government? SCARY!

And let me add this quote from Obama himself.

"Nobody reached out to the Canadians to try to reassure them. They reached out, unbeknownst to the rest of us; They reached out to Mr. Goolsbee, who provided them with a tangible conversation and repeated what we've said on the campaign trail."
..................."unbeknownst to the rest of us"......................
:wtf: does that mean? What didn't who know?
Obama nor his campaign knew his adviser was speaking to a FORIEGN CONSULATE?
Obama nor his campaign knew that a FORIEGN CONSULATE reached out to Mr. Goolsbee?
Which one of these makes you feel confident in Obama's FOREIGN POLICY?

And being the poor example of a presidential candidate...True to form. he stomps out of the room moaning and groaning like the spoiled child that he is.

26. Nice how you "snip" the part where Obama explains... very conniving and biased on your part
Obama and Carol Marin, political editor at NBC5 in Chicago and columnist at the Chicago Sun-Times, tangled over how up front Obama had been about Rezko. Obama cut off her line of questioning, saying that Marin's questions were personally motivated.

"Carol, can I just say I have to really dispute this,” Obama said. “It is true that you wanted an individual sit down, but I don't think that's fair to speak for the entire Chicago press corps because on this -- Let me finish," he interjected as she tried to interrupt.

“Before you were reporting on these issues I had an avail,” Obama said, pointing to members of the Chicago press corps who were present, “where I literally stood there and took every question people could think of."

Lynn Sweet from the Chicago Sun-Times then jumped in and told Obama that he may have answered questions for the Chicago press, but many other reporters hadn't had a chance to hear him on the issue.

"I just want to make that point an issue," Obama said. "You may still have questions, which I'm happy to answer, but I don't think it's fair to suggest somehow that we've been trying to hide the ball on this. There have been more attacks. There have been several hundred stories written on this issue. The fact of the matter remains unchallenged."

146. Obama has never answered the questions. quote and link
Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times wrote in her blog that Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has never sat down with reporters who are the most familiar with the case of indicted political fixer Antoin "Tony" Rezko to answer questions. Obama spokesman David Axelrod told George Stephanopoulos in his March 2, 2008, interview on ABC's "This Week" that that was not true.

However, Susan UnPC checked in with three Sun-Times reporters—Tim Novak, Chris Fusco, and Dave McKinney, who, by the way, are all covering Obama and Rezko—and they backed up Sweet's story.

As in RW radio, many things get snipped selectively, and then repeated in misleading ways ad nauseum....with some fair context one finds that people (Hillary and Barack included) are not as unbalanced and unreasonable as they can be made to appear.

224. As this election goes on, we will see more & more how the press has manipulated
the entire country on the issues and candidates. Many of us were trying to bring this out during the early primaries, and the Kucinich & Edwards media black-outs and mockery sessions.

Anyone that really thinks Hillary or Obama, either one, are the "best" candidate the Dems have to offer just doesn't get it. The corporations are running this election, by the media, by the contributions, and by the "with us or against us" blackmail.

And the corporations have been DETERMINED to make the public believe that even 50% of the population MIGHT take John McCain seriously enough to vote for him. The whole thing is smoke & mirrors.

50. Still Waiting For Evidence That He Did Something Wrong
Maybe you'd be happier talking about Denise Rich or whatever. I have yet to see a single person show me some indication that Obama actually did something wrong. Knowing somebody who did something wrong is a pretty low bar. Taking tens of thousands from the wife of the slimeball your husband pardoned is a fairly high threshold. Enough with the scorched Earth politics and just try to defend your candidate cleanly.

He assured everyone who ventured a question concerning Rezko.. Rezko was an acquaintence and there was nothing more to it.

Well, guess what- Apparently, theres more to his involvement than he cares to admit. The dirt will all come out I hope sooner, rather than later. This is MORE than a Roll of the Dice on Obama.

Obama is playing Russian Roulette with our future, whether you care to admit it or not!

And so it begins....

1) The media will begin their pleas to "crucify him".
2) Obama will deny Rezko 3 times before the Rooster Crows.
3) Obama will then suffer on behalf of all Democrats at the hands of the MSM.

Unfortunately, much to the chagrin of many of his followers (and all Democrats if he is the nominee), there will be no resurrection. It's sad that this could have been avoided, had we chosen a more vetted nominee.

For the record, I supported Edwards, so I have no personal interest in Obama or Clinton.

The cheap shots that supporters give for each candidate is ludicrous. All I have to do after reading an obnoxious post is look to the left and note either an Obama or Clinton avatar. Clearly, responses given from either camp to attack the other's news would be completely differnt should it be their candidate in the same situation. Obama's skirting questions would be explained as the press unfairly attacking Hillary and so on. The pettiness round here is causing me to want to read my news on the BBC. If I was spin I'll turn on anything but Countdown.

Oh that's right Bush is holding them. Yeah right. Maybe he's holding her tax returns too. It just might show that she actually has experience and is ready for day one in the WH to do some cooking for Obama and his administration.

Yeah, I read the link. BFD. Marin badgered him for a while and tried to paint him into a corner. He wasn't going to stand there like an idiot and let her do it. He did exactly what a smart candidate should have done. Hillary does the same thing when they press her with bullshit questions. Know why? Because she's too smart to let them get away with it.

The Rezko thing has been thoroughly vetted. The Story: A campaign contributor who worked with the Obamas on a land deal turned out to be a total shitheel, so he gets rid of the guy's money and says the real estate deal was a stupid mistake. Contrast that with Hillary, who has $170,000 in campaign money from a notorious prick whose company - and who personally - is facing multiple sexual harassment suits and she basically says, "Nah, I'm keeping it because he hasn't been proven guilty." Well neither has Rezko, but Barack didn't hesitate to let go of the guy's money.

Pot, meet kettle.

195. "This is such crap:" I agree with Spiff.
Did anybody watch the brief 'press conference'? I did. Obama didn't flounce out at all. Towards the end an aide to his right was indicating that they were running behind time. I caught the watch or time signal. Obama had to wrap up. If he had taken the time to answer another question (and he appeared to be considering doing so even as he had turned to leave) it might have required more time for clarification or follow-up. Thus, Obama couldn't.

Getting into a habit of taking 5 or 7 extra minutes beyond what was scheduled can throw off an entire schedule by a couple of hours. Bill Clinton was notorious for always being an hour or more late because he didn't have the self-discipline to just shut up and move along. That's not trashing B.C. An acquaintance of mine is actually good friends with Bill Clinton. LOL

I would imagine somebody on these forums has worked on campaigns and can collaborate the truth of what I've posted.

BTW, somebody got welcomed here after 3 posts. Nobody's ever welcomed me. ~sulk~

I am amazed at the level of invective in here. Another post yesterday called me an 'Obama zealot', now I am being called 'stupid' by the OP because I did not click the link to see how he edited the post. This is the level that Hillary's supporters have sunk to. No discussion of the issues, just mis-characterize everything that Obama says or does right before the primary.
And if the Chicago papers have been working this story for a year, where is the screaming headline of Obama's wrong doing? I saw a picture of Hillary and Bill with Rezko looking happy and hugging, haven't seen a pic with Obama yet.
Hillary is throwing the kitchen sink at Obama and it is disgraceful. Limbaugh says he loves seeing Obama being 'bloodied up' by Hillary. Good job Hillary supporters you have Rush on your side now.

Edited on Tue Mar-04-08 02:29 AM by Catherina
"Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. Reasoning is destroyed when the mind is bewildered. One falls down when reasoning is destroyed."

Bhagavad Gita

The fact that this trash got 58 recommendations explains why Hillary is doing do poorly in the primaries. Nobody wants to hitch their fate to a delusional movement except delusional people. Thankfully most voters just get repelled by this kind of stuff.

Are you guys sure you're not stealth Obama supporters trying to turn people off to Hillary? He really should pay you. If he's not, I'd print a copy of threads like this, march down to his HQs claiming authorship. I guarantee you, I'd cut you a check on the spot if I was Axelrod.

Senator Obama did a bit of shadow-boxing and said, "I might be skinny, but I'm tough." At the time, I thought that sound bite was going to come back in a McCain ad in the fall.

Senator Obama did not seem like the tough street fighter when faced with 8 questions. We've got "2-3 minutes" on NAFTA and "8 questions" to be considered as the Number of the Day on Hardball. Something tells me it will be something else that Mr. Matthews chooses to highlight.

If, by such remote chance, Hillary gets to run in the General election the right wing has so much crap on her it could sink a battle ship. All the old film of her nasty temper with the press and others. She won't have a prayer. Republicans don't like her, a lot of Dems don't like her either. On the other hand Obama has a wide range of public support from both sides. I am afraid that only the very liberal wing of the party will support Hillary. You need cross-over votes and that's why Obama will win Texas and Ohio today....................

205. After campaigning so long and so hard, I'm sure the Senator is tired.
If you watch any press conference, you'll notice reporters asking questions just for the sake of asking a question. They ususally repeat the same version of one question numerous times. I don't blame Obama for becoming annoyed. Yesterday, the entire MSM was celebrating "Bash Obama Day." Even after the Canadian government issued statements about NAFTA, after the Obama campaign issued statements about NAFTA - the MSM continued on the original charge and the original attack. It's a tad suspicious.

226. I find it more disturbing to endorse a Republican candidate,
than to rush off from a press conference. A staff member gestured that they were running late. Plain and simple.

Now this is an example of walking off in a snit.

230. Regarding Obama walking out in Texas
It's surely election season and things are heating up. This thing is getting nasty. And, if this campaign is going "down and dirty", don't count Hillary out after all because nobody does "down and dirty" better than the Clintons.

If he can't take the heat from reporters he will wilt like a cheap carnation under the heat of the right wing slime machine.

The question we should ask now, have we bought another John Kerry who won't stand up for himself?

Ask Tough Questions? Yes, They Can

The Press, overall, has been friendly to Obama. Have they decided that he will get the nomination and it is now OK to take off the gloves and treat him like a normal Democratic nominee?

If so, his John Kerry moment of running from the Press doesn't bode well.

309. This is pretty good:
Obama responded with the classic phrases of a politician in trouble. "That was the information that I had at the time. . . . Those charges are completely unrelated to me. . . . I have said that that was a mistake. . . . The fact pattern remains unchanged."

When those failed, Obama tried another approach. "We're running late," the candidate said, and then he disappeared behind a curtain.

Before he beat his hasty retreat, however, Obama found time to assign blame for the tough questions suddenly coming his way. "The Clinton campaign has been true to its word in employing a 'kitchen sink' strategy," he protested. "There are, what, three or four things a day?"

Spoken like a man who had just been hit on the head with a heavy piece of porcelain.

Edited on Tue Mar-04-08 12:57 PM by flordehinojos
when asked a question he did not like (or did not want to answer) or was too close to the truth Obama did what the bushit boy does:

"Obama cut off her line of questioning, saying that Marin's questions were personally motivated."

snip/

and then again, how many times have we seen the bushit boy walk away all soured up at something or some reporter he did not like? many times over!

"Toward the end of the press conference, the question of Goolsbee's meeting was raised again. Obama answered curtly and then walked out after a staffer called last question. The press erupted with shouts, but Obama continued to walk out.

He paused only to say, "Come on guys; I answered like eight questions. We're running late.”

The press knows there's nothing there but they're trying their best to make this a story so they can say they gave Obama some negative coverage. This is all a direct result of Hillary's complaining about how well the press treats Obama. She screwed the party again.

298. Obama staffer tells Canadian government they are lying to American voters, Really?
This is just a snippet of an article and if you read the article quoted above you get an entirely different impression. Obama didn't refuse to answer questions, this was not some scheduled press conference and he didn't storm off. The implication made by the poster above is that Obama is lying about his opposition to Nafta and when it comes to the press, can't take the heat. That doesn't wash, he maintained his composure with the press and he has not been inconsistent about Nafta. He has said more or less and it is rather a sober position, that we must honor our treaties but basically he sees this treaty as flawed. The Hillary camp takes up a similar line now, though they had not done so before this became an issue. Does anyone really believe the Obama camp would go to a foreign government and assure them that actually they are just lying about their stance on this treaty to win votes in the U.S.? Even the Protocols of the Elders of Zion are not that two dimensional. Karl Rove is almost redeemed when compared to these tactics. And it almost makes the yahoos of the republican party seem like rational and truly concerned voters. You democrats and especially you Hillary people are your own worst enemies. I am willing to give Obama my vote because at least he says what I want to hear, whether he is sincere or not, how can one be expected to vote for someone who doesn't at least do that much. But he seems sincere and no real dirt has been dug up on him. Hillary doesn't say anything substantive, with or without any spirit of hope. Why would I want to vote for her? Why would anyone? Because she's a woman? Because any democrat is better than any republican? With democrats like Hillary who needs republicans? Oh but I forget one crucial difference, she does support partnership rights and adoption rights for gay couples, definitely different in that regard and a burning issue in America's heartland. (sarcasm okay) Oh right she's pragmatic. Ready on day one. Let me ask you all: has she been an effective senator? Another consideration: unfair or not, most Americans just can't stand her. Also her running will mobilize the new nazi jerk base of the Republican party. (Damn, what happened to the republican party?) You know that, we all know that, except it seems a sea of bleating sheep. Perhaps they know that as well. I don't want to see all these young people who have been registering democrat in record numbers now for the past three election cycles become disillusioned but it seems a lot of old school dems get some sexual kick out of losing and their masochistic tendencies compel them to enlist us in a campaign which can only end in bitter disappointment. Whatever happens, if the dems do win in November they are facing a massive public and government debt, the loss of connections the world over, a stacked judiciary, military and political problems not currently on the radar, the true cost of the Iraq fiasco will become apparent and the American people are going to have to sacrifice for a while before we can set things straight. Obama has been clear about these problems we face and spoken about them in detail. Well not very much so, but at least much more so than the other two candidates we are left with.

299. Obama character
I do not recall which of the Framers of the Constitution
stated it, but, we are cautioned to examine the character of
candidates carefully. One's connections to a person of
dangerous character are appropriate for consideration. Will
the office holder act in the interest of the public or will
the office holder act for her or his own interest and use the
position for personal and illicit gain? We have to make this
evaluation by reference to the past actions of the candidate
or incumbent. That Sen. Obama has seemingly tried to hide
such connections calls his character into potentially grave
doubt. Note that I did qualify my evaluation. More
information is needed but he must be open to providing it.

What is the alleged crime or problem? I haven't heard that anyone has identified a problem that Obama has to deal with other than Rezko is a typical wheeler dealer type.
