Hillary Clinton addresses crowd at Waco Convention Center

Feb. 29, 2008 -- The room suddenly erupted in noise and a round of "Sic Em Bears" as Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., took the stage among distinguished military leaders and veterans Friday at the Waco Convention Center.

"Sitting behind me are the people who have played the most important role of defending and protecting our country," Clinton said. "And I am honored to stand here with them."

"I see how we've been failing our veterans and our military families," she said. "Our armed forces are what America stands for; they are an example of democracy and strength and we need to honor them."

"I understand completely what it means when the phone rings at 3 a.m. and there is an international crisis waiting to be solved," she said. "There is no time to convene with advisors, no time to poll the public and see what would yield favorable results. What our armed forces need is a president who picks up that phone ready to decide."

"The most solemn duty the president has is to protect and defend this country," she said. "Twenty-five generals have endorsed me and that's because they know I have the experience that equips me to give the right answer when that phone rings at 3 in the morning."

"I will shift the focus back to where we began, lest we forget that it was from Afghanistan that plans against us took form, lest we forget that they are still at large," she said. "We haven't focused on what we needed to to be successful."

"I will end the cold hearted policies this administration has enacted against our troops and veterans like taking signing bonuses away from injured soldiers," Clinton said. "If we can't take care of those who take care of us, we do our country a big disservice."

Clinton ended her speech with a story about a little girl collapsing at the Houston rally for the senator the previous night. When she suggested to the girl's mother that she take her somewhere and get her checked out, the woman told her that she had no health care.

"Every single mom and dad deserve to have peace of mind when it comes to their children," she said. "So don't vote for me; vote for your jobs, for your family, for your health care, for your college education, for your loved ones who serve this country. America's best days are ahead of us. It's just up to us to turn our dream into a reality."

1. I already intend to vote for those things. For those things are the basics in one's life.
Anything else are wedge issues.

Whomever is nominated in the end, I vote for the very reasons she states.

As do us all.

In theory...

2. You know,
I think Hillary Clinton will stand behind that sentiment, even if she doesn't achieve the nomination.

26. And if she is nominated, just like I'd ask the same of the other candidates,
how will she keep her word.

Is that not a fair question to ask any politician running for office?

Somehow every single thing this campaign puts out seems to scream "written by committee".

12. well, that judgment doesn't reflect her personal history
. . . because, she's been working and fighting for these positions for years, as Senator, First Lady, and as a private citizen.

16. I apologize if I implied that it did
That was not my intent; my intent was to point out that the slogan "Solutions for America" reminds me of the sort of slogans that come out of committee meetings.

9. "the most solemn duty the president has is to" preserve, protect and defend the Constitution.
There. Fixed it for you, Hillary.

It's called the oath of office, and to the extent that any candidate ignores it - including Obama - they ought to be called on it.

27. Suppose they detected a missile is heading our way?
I don't think there would be time to consult advisers. A decision would have to be made on the spot...and pronto. Also, suppose the enemy struck one of the first days/weeks of the new administration? I'd feel a lot safer with a person who has been in that bed next to that phone and wouldn't jump the hell out of their skin wondering who to call next. All she'd have to do is give Bill a nudge. lol

35. I wish the media would show him supporting/campaigning for her. People
would have even better faith or confidence in her candidacy. I'll bet an awful lot of people don't even know he endorses her. I can just see Hill, Bill and Wes traveling world wide together mending our reputation and getting world leaders and old friends to cooperate with the US.
