I overheard some people talking today...
One said that if Barack is the nominee, he would vote for Nader.

The other one said that if Hillary is the nominee, he would vote for McCain.

Then they hi-fived.

At this point, I couldn't contain my anger and frustration. I was shaking when I walked up to them and shouted "YOU PEOPLE ARE DESTROYING THIS COUNTRY!"

The guy who I presume was an Obama supporter was so shaken up that he spilled hot latte all over the himself. Then the Clinton guy yelled back "Shame on you for jumping in our conversation like that!"

3. You should ask yourself WHY?
I have many reasons why, but perhaps you should read some of Noam Chomsky or Howard Zinn, after that you may just get WHY people are saying that

5. there are some
folks in this country who won't vote for a black man no matter what. And some who won't vote for a woman no matter what. I can't figure out which is the biggest group. They're both idiots, but they could drive this election.

7. Pretty sure it's the woman they won't vote for.
Heck, we've had the conversation in our own household - SO says he doesn't care if there is ever a woman president in his lifetime. It just flat out doesn't matter to him. Needless to say, he is supporting Obama and we can't seem to have a single conversation about issues. He simply discusses (not in a good way) his perceptions of Hillary's style. He absolutely doesn't see the least bit of humor in her take on Obama's speaking style the other day, either.

9. you're probably right
Doesn't sound like your SO is too fond of women, although I bet he likes certain aspects of your womanhood. LOL.

Women do get the short end of the stick in public life, e.g., comments about being shrill. How dare a woman raise her voice or show passion!

8. My, my, children! Well, I'm not against anger, if properly channeled.
But I don't think butting in did much good. You should have maybe channeled your anger into a joke, a sidebar remark, like, "Say, do you two gentlemen know where the Obama campaign headquarters is, cuz, myself, I'm tired of just talking about it, I want to DO something about it'-- or maybe direct them into civic activism--like, saying, 'Hey, it really doesn't matter what either of you think, if they're counting all the votes with trade secret code. Better do something about THAT--so, whatever you decide, it's actually recorded and counted.'

Anger, like the jitters before a public performance, CAN be good energy. Just slide your mind into theirs for a second and figure out what would bump them off their log. (You tangled with them on their terms, and so just got a defensive reaction.)

Another trick is to tell yourself that your goal is NOT to convince them of anything, but rather to stimulate THEIR brains in a way that can generate their own creativity and intelligence. And truly give up the goal of convincing them, or change their minds, or getting them to behave (or to vote) the way you want them to. Just, in your mind, wish them well on life's journey, and drop some gem of thought on them that will resonate later.

10. conversation with a friend today
she said: "just had a talk with a woman at work. she said she is going to vote for McCain but if Hillary had a chance she would vote for her. BUT, who she really wanted was Edwards. I asked her why she's voting for McCain then since Clinton's and Obama's agenda's were almost, but not quite, identical. And, since she really supported Edwards why the support for McCain now since their platforms are so opposite? She said "because of religious reasons"... i.e. she believes Obama is Muslim."
