Ohio .........word on the street today
Just an update of my conversations of the past few days in Ohio

1. Spoke to a Republican that hates bush yesterday - he don't want either candidate to win because he "Doesn't want to pay anyone else's insurance costs" - "He doesn't like McCain but figure he would be better than our candidates" - of course, I said "So the health plans would be a drop in the bucket to your trillion dollar war that shouldn't of been waged but you won't agree to pay a minute amount for insurance coverage for all?" You should of heard the silence, of course I followed it with, "One thing for sure this year, you hard nosed Republicans can't say the first damn word about 'Tax and Spend' Democrats this year" adding, "You have outspent us ten ways to Sunday" Conversation ended abruptly.

2. Spoke to a few people going to see Bill Clinton today. I said I had thought about going but felt guilty doing so as I am supporting Obama, they laughed and said, yes, they were too, but didn't want to pass up the opportunity to see him speak.

3. Spoke to 3 people who were voting Hillary.

4. Spoke to someone who confided in me they had talked to people in Southeast Ohio that are planning to stay home because they won't vote for a woman, a black man, or a republican.

5. Heard that you cannot get close to an Obama event (people lined up for blocks waiting to get in).

6. Agreed to go to a Clinton event if a cousin that supports Clinton would attend an Obama event with me.

7. Spoke to people in a diner who said they were voting Obama because they didn't like Hillary.

Yes, I am supporting Obama and do not mean this post as a flame - just reporting what I am hearing here in Ohio.

26. I like to compare "tax and spend" with the neocon version -- "borrow and spend"
That typically gets 'em thinking.

3. Number 4 is the worrisome one
Racism and sexism both have deep roots in this country. After seeing the vote in Idaho, it's my impression that sexism runs a little deeper, but still, number 4 is a real downer to see.

7. Yes it is a downer and I would love to see both candidates
spend a lot of time in SE Ohio - I believe if they heard either of them speak, they would change their minds.

9. Did you go to Lancaster?
I ask because it is close to my house and we had terrible traffic here (12 miles south, BUT in direct line with I70 to Lancaster) I thought about going, but could not get off work in time to do so.

What I am hearing I am not EVEN going to post. I am still in the undecided camp, but many people, some I work with, have made up their minds, and not in a good way. Hell...what am I thinking, they won't vote for anyone but a Caucasian male...I give them too much credit in my mind...they suck and I need to stop trying to save die hard racists/sexists because it is a waste of my time when I could ne working on people who may be staying home because they are undecided. I want to see them vote for SOMEONE rather than no one.

Diners and coffee shops...depends on who you are taking to. I am thinking that short of an utter and complete collapse during the debate, Mrs. Clinton will win Ohio. It will come down to GOTV, especially when Indies and Repubs see they have to stay registered as a Dem for two years if they crossover. I don't think crossover will happen like they think with Repubs...maybe to a degree with Indies.

12. No, I didn't go to Lancaster but just off the phone with someone
who said the lines to see Bill Clinton were long.

I really hated to hear the sexist and racist crap, too. Don't you think that people would change their minds if they were able to listen to the candidates in person?

16. I wish...it makes me sick to my stomach at times, so it is not good for
my health to over think them...they don't deserve it.

You understand the type I am talking about don't you? The ones that SAY that gender/race etc does not make a difference, and then find ANY excuse to NOT vote for them so they can SAY they are not racists/sexists

20. I figure that is why Bill is doing the SE portion of Ohio BUT
I really believe if Obama or Hillary would get down there, they could sway the opinion - people are only afraid of what they don't know. There is a difference between racism and prejudice - what I have seen in SE Ohio is mainly prejudice's - and people who are can and do change.

Boosh helped fuel that fire... Obama and Hillary can extinguish it.

21. My husband is from Lancaster. I'm so sorry you're still there...
the first time I visited with him, I couldn't believe it. For some reason, I thought all rednecks were in the South.
He laughed at me of course. Man, SE Ohio sucks. I wouldn't live there if you paid me. Makes NC look cosmopolitan. :hi:

30. Yes, but really really Dem area
are you surprised?

Somerset..home of the best chicken on Sunday...Clay Haus

And the folks in New Lex vote Dem. Perry County is a different animal. Lancaster is simply a corrupt cesspool. HOWEVER, in 2006 city council went from being TOTALLY all Repubs to being a Dem majority. Fairfield County may surprise folks this year.

Lancaster. He went to the New Lexington elementary school. It's nice to hear it's not so
bad. His mom has moved into Columbus now. She works at the Art college there.

14. I can verify the #4 type comment; heard it (also) in Ohio Saturday.

Here in Ky, it's not uncommon to hear "I'm skipping the primary 'cause I can't vote for either of them (Democrats). Primary is in May.

33. As to point #5... 'tis true
Obama had an appearance Monday at Wright State University's Nutter Center near Dayton. Nutter seats roughly 17,000, perhaps a few thousand more according to how the venue is configured (basketball, hockey, and concerts are held there). When we got there a line of people stretched around the entire building. Parking was full, even in a distant lot about a half-mile or so from the arena. Traffic was pouring in from every direction, people were coming in on foot. Standing-room-only shuttle buses were carrying people to Nutter from the outlying lots.

While I am amazed at the turnout (my guess was you had to have been there by 1:30 or 2 p.m. for the 6 p.m. rally), I was in no way disappointed that I could not get in to see him. I figure this will not be his last visit to Dayton or the Miami Valley.

(HRC, on the other hand, drew a packed house at a nearby high school gymnasium over the weekend.)
