Voted today in my TX repuke red county...
Edited on Sat Feb-23-08 04:44 PM by rainbow4321
and out of a line of 8 people, all but one responded "Democratic" when asked by the poll worker "which party primary are you voting in today".
Woo-hooo!!!!
The woman behind me was soooo cute, had to be about late 80's or 90, she overheard me respond "Democratic" and she smiled really big and said to me "ME, TOO!!!". She initially started to talking to me cuz she saw I had my driver license and voter registration card in hand and she was worried about not having a picture ID on her. The poll worker assured her it was fine, she could still vote. She went to use the touch screen computer next to mine, got another worried look on her face and goes "I don't know how to use this thing!". I told her that the poll workers have to show her how to use it and asked if she wanted me to flag one down. One quickly came over and started walking her through it.

In all my years voting in my county, I don't think I have ever left with such a good feeling/smile on my face!!!

GO COLLIN COUNTY DEMOCRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3. Are you sure all those people want a Democrat to win?
In open primaries, sometimes people from one party will crossover to vote against the other party's best candidate.

Did that happen here?

I don't know. But I know that at one time, my brother was one of only six politically active Democrats in Plano, TX.

And leopards have stain-resistant spots.

7. Lots of layoffs, outsourcing, and foreclosures
Edited on Sat Feb-23-08 05:29 PM by rainbow4321
We have EDS, Texas Instruments, and a bunch of other places. Nortel is near us...as is the entire "telecom corridor" that has taken a hit since chimp took office.
I've said before my disgust in the repukes up here who despite having to go thru record layoffs/foreclosures in our area, STILL make the county go 70% repuke in each Prez election..last time the county was prosperous was in the 90's with a DEMOCRATIC president. The shit hit the fan Nov 2000. Unfortunately, the majority of Collin County residents been able to connect the dots!!!!!!!!

Scariest part...***Huckabee*** was here at a mini rally last week and I would not be surprised for him to get a huge following from the clueless local repukes. Guess we'll find out March 4th!

9. Honestly have not heard anything recently about them
I know a couple years ago they were in the news about local layoffs but nothing recent comes to mind, least nothing I've seen.

11. The HP location in Richardson on Campbell? They left that building at least 4 years ago and I
haven't heard where they went too. Ericsson used to have a big foot print in Richardson but they closed office there and moved over on the tollway in west Plano/west Richardson area.

Texas is Obama country.

12. Plano, Richardson, McKinney ,Allen and Frisco are all taking lay off hits.
The DFW metroplex is still trying to recover from the dot com and telecom meltdowns.

Alcatel still has some presence in Plano. They sold off part of the former DSC property they had to a Catholic High School and are occupying the buildings they built on W. Plano Parkway. They are doing very limited hiring, mainly for select Alcatel related skills only. Nortel has cut many there but it still has a presence but little or no outside hiring. Cisco has very limited hiring as well. TI has taken hits as well and closed fab plants and cut operations here.

If experienced, you have to network in to get hired.

However, there are many many more high tech jobs in the are, and Raytheon is hiring for their many locations down here.

It just appears that telecom and semiconductor will be very fiat for some time down. One thing for sure though, the golden age of the telecom days like the '90s are gone for good thanks to outsourcing to India and China.

6. Guess anything is possible...
I went to the Collin County Democratic Party meeting pre-2004 Election and the room was pretty full.
Not too long ago I remember reading that the county repukes are having to turn to the more rural county settings to recruit kool aid drinkers because the "bigger" city population was getting much more diverse, hence, more Democratic (transplants from Dallas, etc..)

Per the TX SOS website, below is the number of total in person/mail in votes as of Feb. 21st. There's 378,730 total registered voters in the county. It will be interesting to see the numbers once this weekend is over, there was talk/expectation of a huge TX turnout all over the state.

Collin Democratic 7,008

Collin Republican 5,120

If nothing else from today was real, I really feel that elderly woman's smile and enthusiasm about also being a Democrat was...that alone made my day.

Oh, here's an odd Plano story for you: Apparently, back in 2004 there was a homeowner who put one of those billboard size "chimp supporter" signs up on his fence, facing a major Plano road. The guy's neighbor called him and said that his fence was on fire..whoever was opposed to the chimp sign came along and set it on fire..not realizing (or caring?) that the sign was attached to a WOODEN fence!
