When were you (or will you be) first eligible to vote,
and when did you first vote? I'm on a "voting thread" kick.

I was eligible in 2000, though I didn't vote. I found both Bush and Gore to be rather lackluster and, had I voted, would probably have voted for Nader. That's not something I'm really even considering this time around.

I voted for the first time in the mid-term election of 2002, helping to make Arkansas the only state in that election to unseat an incumbent Republican senator (Hutchinson).

So, how about you? When were you first eligible, and when did you first vote.

2. I was eligible in 1980
Turned 18 in August of that year. I voted in El Dorado, Kansas. Extremely ashamed to say I voted for Ronnie Raygun (under the influence of an evil Republican professor - it's all his fault!) I quickly wised up and have never looked back!

9. 1968 grade school election
Out of 26 in my 6th grade class, I was one of two who voted for Humphrey. Six voted for Nixon, and the rest all voted for Wallace.

Needless to say, civil rights wasn't a priority in my all-white working class neighborhood on the edge of Chicago. The murder of King that year was a tragedy in my household, but generally a cause for celebration among my peers.

Edited on Sat Mar-20-04 04:29 PM by elperromagico
I actually voted for Perot. Twice (the second election was a runoff of sorts). Why, I don't know. I probably just wanted to be different.

Of course, being in Arkansas, Clinton won the school by a wide margin.

28. 2005 as well...
but I'm not as close as you. Still, it will be disappointing that my first votes will be in Charlotte's mayoral race (a who-cares race). In fact, I may just wait till 2006 (see sig). Even then, N.C. won't be electing a Senator, so there's only one important race, the Congressional race.

Sigh.

7. 1976
I voted for independent Gene McCarthy, because I liked his peace candidacy in 1968. I was a student at SIU-Carbondale at the time, and had the pleasure of voting Paul Simon for Congress.

I've never voted for a Republican in a general election, but I voted for John Anderson in the R primary in 1980 (then voted Carter in November).

But unfortunately didn't start voting until well into the 80's as a Republican until I came to my senses and switched my registration to Democratic.

Now I'm a flaming, pain in the butt, liberal. (according to my relatives - hehe)

Which would have been Bob Traxler, who won. There wasn't a senatorial election for Michiganians that year, either (just like this year).
My first presidential election was in 1976 and I, of course, voted for Carter (even though Jerry Ford was from Michigan).

Carter v. Reagan. It killed me to miss that one, but I passed out literature that day instead.

Obviously, my first presidential election was 1984---Mondale v. Reagan. I voted before that, though.
