WHO CARES whether Obama followers are cultists?
The only important question for you, the individual voter, is whether Obama is the right candidate for *you* and this country. Whether other people faint like teased groupies when they hear his speeches has no bearing on anything.

Jesus has some pretty fucked up followers too, but I don't blame him for that. Same for Bono.

Not to spoil all of the kiddies' fun time, but is it really too much to ask that we just try to deal with people based on their own individual qualities and their own track record, and not on the talk that happens to be generated about them? The gravity of the decision about who gets to be in the Oval Office a year from now requires and deserves a much more serious attitude.

Now back to the regularly scheduled pointless mudfight.

1. This would have been so much more convincing
if you hadn't included Bono.

:P

9. Well you know, there's that Jesus-Bono connection there.
It's the proverbial elephant in the room.

Have to admit that my first thought was Bob Geldof, but then that would have blown my whole argument to smithereens.

2. 95% of the Hillary supporters' invective and attacks here are because they KNOW she's LOST.
last throes of a dying campaign and the bitterness sets in for those who have thought for 4 years she would win

7. Who ever thought Hillary's winning was a done deal?
I support her now, but I didn't start out supporting her. I never thought her nomination was a done deal. I'm very surprised that anyone else thought so. A WOMAN nominee? Oh, yeah, that was in the bag the whole time.....NOT.

11. And did you see Bill Clinton
a year ago say that he believed Hillary would win the GE if nominated, but that there was a good chance she wouldn't win the nomination?

The inevitability nonsense was a creation of the Clinton haters - not the Clinton campaign.

19. Lady?
And what am I supposed to look for in the Couric interview?

Surely you're not dumb enough to take the "When I'm President...." construction that every candidate uses as a sign of inevitability? I can find the same usage from ALL the candidates, even Gravel.

20. I did watch the Couric interview. Very embarrassing for CBS
It was really, really bad and full of loaded questions, I might add. Hillary handled it well, but I certainly didn't hear her say anywhere in that interview that she thought of herself as the presumed nominee.

12. Yes. I was in a coma. Thanks for raising the level of debate.
Since I've never heard Hillary or any of her supporters actually SAY that - but have only heard it from the media and her opponents - I kind of question whether anyone in her campaign actually said that or really, even thought it. She was never the clearcut nominee in my eyes, and I think the campaign has borne that out.

3. I go for substance, not ethereal promises. Maybe that's all the cultists need...
but I need to know what's behind the rhetoric.

13. Superior much?
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 01:22 PM by Forkboy
Tell me Maddy, is there any politician that has ever run for office that hasn't had a cult of personality thing going on? Isn't that kind of the point when someone runs, to get people to believe in them, to have faith in them? Do you think because you're a Hillary supporter that you're somehow impervious to the same effect happening to you and others? I've bought into it at times through my life.

Both camps need a lesson in humility, because there's some seriously arrogant fucks parading around like their shit doesn't stink.

24. " ... cult of personality ..."
Dukakis probably qualifies. It took the scintillating persona of Jon Lovitz to give him some pizzazz.

"... seriously arrogant fucks ..."

Yep.

14. Cultists could apply to damn near every supporter of every candidate.
The people who tend to use it are thinking they're superior and above falling for things like that, but watching their words and actions one would be hard pressed to see the difference between them and the people they call cultists.
