It was nice to see Wes Clarke, even for a bit. I know he supports Hillary but I still dig the guy.

42. It's always great to see Gen. Clark...
Doesn't matter if he and I are on different sides in the primaries this time--he's still my man! :D

And wow, is it just me, or does Obama sound like he's getting a much bigger ovation at the Wis. dinner than did Hillary?

Fire 'em up, Barack...they're ready to go!

B-)

80. "Washington is the place where good ideas go to die."
Politicians spend to much time trying to score political points.

We put forth all kinds of different plans and they end up in a drawer somewhere gathering dust.

The American people have given up expecting that promises in Washington will ever be kept.

Need to lead not by polls, but by principles.

That is why I'm running for President of the United States of America.

85. Americans don't have health care not because they don't want it, but because they can't afford it.
If you don't have health insurance and you want it, you will have it under my plan.

To suggest otherwise is false.

I will not wait 20 years to do this. I won't do it 10 years from now. I will do it by the end of my first term as President of the United States!

Obamas Remarks at Wisconsin Democrats Gala

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

Wisconsin

It has now been a little over a year since we began this campaign for the presidency on the steps of the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois just me and 15,000 of my closest friends.

At the time, there werent too many who imagined wed be standing where we are today. I knew I wouldnt be Washingtons favorite candidate. I knew we wouldnt get all the big donors or endorsements right off the bat. I knew Id be the underdog in every contest from January to June. I knew it wouldnt be easy.

But then something started happening. As we met people in their living rooms and on their farms; in churches and town hall meetings, they all started telling a similar story about the state of our politics today. Whether theyre young or old; black or white; Latino or Asian; Democrat, Independent or even Republican, the message is the same:

We are tired of being disappointed by our politics. We are tired of being let down. Were tired of hearing promises made and ten-point plans proposed in the heat of a campaign only to have nothing change when everyone goes back to Washington. Because the lobbyists just write another check. Or because politicians start worrying about how theyll win the next election instead of why they should. Or because they focus on whos up and whos down instead of who matters.

And while Washington is consumed with the same drama and division and distraction, another family puts up a For Sale sign in the front yard. Another factory shuts its doors forever. Another mother declares bankruptcy because she cannot pay her childs medical bills.

And another soldier waves goodbye as he leaves on another tour of duty in a war that shouldve never been authorized and never been waged. It goes on and on and on, year after year after year.

But in this election at this moment Americans are standing up all across the country to say, not this time. Not this year. The stakes are too high and the challenges too great to play the same Washington game with the same Washington players and expect a different result.

Now, this isnt about me and its not about Senator Clinton. As Ive said before, I have great respect for Senator Clinton as a person and a public servant. She was my friend before this campaign and shell be my friend after its over. I did not get into this race to tear her or anyone down. I got in this race to lift this country up.

Both Hillary and I agree on one thing that John McCain does not the next President must end the disastrous policies of George W. Bush. And both of us have spent this campaign and our careers putting forth detailed policies and yes solutions to turn this country around. Some are different. Many are the same. I understand that Senator Clinton just recently decided to support an idea that Ive been advocating for years a Patriot Employer Act that will reward companies that create good jobs right here in America.

But lets be clear. The problem we have is not a lack of good ideas. Its that Washington is a place where good ideas go to die. Its that lobbyists crush them with their money and influence. Its that politicians spend too much time trying to score political points and not enough time trying to bridge their differences so we can get something done for the American people. Its easy to be in the solutions business. What we need is a President whos in the business of solving our problems, and bringing this country together, and rallying the United States of America to a common purpose a higher purpose. And Wisconsin, if you give me the chance on Tuesday, thats the kind of President Ill be for the next four years.

I know what it takes to pass health care reform because Ive done it not by demonizing those who disagree with me, but by bringing Democrats and Republicans together to provide health insurance to 150,000 children and parents in Illinois. And thats how Ill pass universal health care when I am President of the United States.

But you dont have to take my word for it. Ted Kennedy said that he wouldnt have endorsed me if he didnt believe passionately that I will bring about universal health care as President and no ones fought harder for universal health care than Ted Kennedy. The millions of working men and women of the SEIU wouldnt have endorsed me if they didnt believe I could bring about universal health care because theyve been fighting for that cause for decades.

I applaud Senator Clinton for advancing a health care plan. It includes many of the steps I proposed when I came out with my plan last spring, like allowing every American to get the same kind of health care coverage that members of Congress get for themselves. Wed also ban insurance companies from denying people coverage because of a pre-existing condition.

But on one point we disagree. Senator Clinton would have the government force you to buy health insurance, and she said shed consider going after your wages if you dont. I believe that the reason Americans dont have health care isnt because no ones forced them to buy it, its because no ones made it affordable, and thats why I start with cutting costs and bringing down premiums by $2500 for the typical family.

And let me be perfectly clear if youre an uninsured American who wants health care coverage, you will have it under my plan. Any suggestion otherwise is just false. There are families all over Wisconsin who are struggling under the weight of their medical bills, and we owe them and every American more than the same old attacks and distortions that never change anything.

Words do matter. What our leaders say does matter because the American people need to trust that were saying what we mean and we mean what were saying. That we dont change our positions based on the politics of the moment or the audience were talking to.

I didnt just start criticizing unfair trade deals like NAFTA and China because I started running for President I do it because Ive seen what happens to a community when the factory closes down and the jobs move overseas. I began my career as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago, where we fought joblessness and poverty in neighborhoods that were devastated when the local steel plant closed.

I wont stand here and tell you that we can or should stop free trade. But I also wont stand here and accept an America where we do nothing to help our workers who have lost jobs and opportunities

We will end those tax breaks for companies who ship our jobs overseas when I am President. Well also help working families who are struggling in this economy by ending the Bush-McCain tax cuts for the wealthy and putting a middle-class tax cut worth $1000 into the pockets of 95% of Americas workers. Well eliminate income taxes for any senior making less than $50,000. And well give struggling homeowners a break with a tax credit that covers 10% of the interest on their mortgage.

I didnt just respond to this housing crisis once I hit the campaign trail, I fought for legislation almost two years ago that wouldve cracked down on predatory lenders and treated those who commit mortgage fraud like the criminals they are. And when Im President, well use the penalties they pay to help the families they tricked stay in their homes or re-finance their mortgage.

Its also time we reformed our bankruptcy laws in this country. One of the first things I did when I got to the U.S. Senate was to fight against a bankruptcy bill that makes it harder for working families to climb out of debt. And when Im President, Ill close the loophole that lets millionaires with multiple homes renegotiate their mortgage in bankruptcy court, but not the victims of predatory lending. If your medical bills send you into bankruptcy, youll be able to relieve that debt and get back on your feet. And Ill make sure that CEOs cant dump your pension with one hand while they collect a bonus with the other. Thats an outrage, and its time we had a President who knows its an outrage.

Its also time to give every child, everywhere, a world-class education, from the day theyre born to the day they graduate college. I am only here today because somebody, somewhere, gave my father a ticket to come study in America. Because my mother got the opportunity to put herself through graduate school. Because even though we didnt have much growing up, I got scholarships to go to some of the best schools in the country. So I dont see the children who go to crumbling schools in Milwaukee or Dayton or Dallas as those kids, I see them as our kids and all of them deserve the chance to succeed.

When I am President, we will give our children the best possible start by investing in early childhood education. Well stop talking about how great our teachers are, and start rewarding them for their greatness, with better pay and more support. And we will provide every American with a $4,000 a year tax credit that will finally help make a college education affordable and available for all.

And when I am President, this party will be the party that finally makes sure our sons and daughters dont grow up in a century where our economy is weighed down by our addiction to oil; our foreign policy is held hostage to the whims of dictators; and our planet passes a moment of no return.

When I called for higher fuel efficiency standards, I didnt do it in front of an environmental group in California I did it in front of the automakers in Detroit. Now it was pretty quiet I didnt get a lot of applause. But we need leadership that tells the American people not just what they want to hear, but what we need to know. Thats why I will set the goal of an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050, and we will meet it with higher fuel standards and new investments in renewable fuels that will create millions of new jobs and entire new industries right here in America.

Finally, it is time to turn the page on eight years of a foreign policy that has made us less safe and less respected in the world. If I am the nominee of this party, John McCain will not be able to say that I agreed with him on voting for the war in Iraq; agreed with him on giving George Bush the benefit of the doubt on Iran; and agree with him in embracing the Bush-Cheney policy of not talking to leaders we dont like. Because that doesnt make us look strong, it makes us look arrogant. John F. Kennedy said that you should never negotiate out of fear, but you should never fear to negotiate. And thats what I will do as President. I dont just want to end this war in Iraq I want to end the mindset that got us into war.

I want to end the mindset that says the only way for Democrats to look tough on national security is by talking, and acting, and voting like Bush-McCain Republicans. I want to end the mindset that says its ok to use 9/11 as a way to scare up votes, because terrorism shouldnt be a wedge that divides us, it should be a challenge that unites us against the common threats we face terrorism and genocide; poverty and disease.

Now, John McCain is a good man, an American hero, and we honor his service to this nation. But in this campaign, he has made the decision to embrace the failed policies George Bushs Washington.

He speaks of a hundred year war in Iraq and sees another on the horizon with Iran. He now wants to make permanent the George Bush tax cuts he once courageously opposed.

But this is what happens when you spend too long in Washington. Politicians dont say what they mean and they dont mean what they say. And that is why in this election, our party cannot stand for business-as-usual in Washington. The Democratic Party must stand for change.

Our party the Democratic Party has always been at its best when weve led not by polls, but by principle; not by calculation, but by conviction; when weve called all Americans to a common purpose a higher purpose.

We are the party of Jefferson, who wrote the words that we are still trying to heed that all of us are created equal that all of us deserve the chance to pursue our happiness.

Were the party of Jackson, who took back the White House for the people of this country.

Were the party of a man who overcame his own disability to tell us that the only thing we had to fear was fear itself; who faced down fascism and liberated a continent from tyranny.

And were the party of a young President who asked what we could do for our country, and the challenged us to do it.

That is who we are. That is the Party that we need to be, and can be, if we cast off our doubts, and leave behind our fears, and choose the America that we know is possible. Because there is a moment in the life of every generation, if it is to make its mark on history, when its spirit has to come through, when it must choose the future over the past, when it must make its own change from the bottom up.

This is our moment. This is our message the same message we had when we were up, and when we were down. The same message that we will carry all the way to the convention. And in nine months time we can realize this promise; we can claim this legacy; we can choose new leadership for America. Because there is nothing we cannot do if the American people decide it is time.

strength" ! The look on his face was nothing short of determined, and that is how he will fight for us.

183. of course we have all heard parts of the speech before
but he keeps getting better and better and I realized that as strange as it seems this system actually is working and we are seeing a man who has an obvious set of skills grow in stature before our eyes. State by state he isn't running for president he is becoming president.

154. Good speech
I'm sorry I missed Hillary's. Obama did well, but I still don't "get it." I must say, it wasn't as "evangelical" as some of his other speeches I've heard, though, which is a good thing. And he actually talked about some policies, another good thing.

I rate it a B. (And yes, I'll vote for him if he's the nominee, so hold your fire)

mean something, at first I thought he had a cold, but I think he fell asleep during Hillary's speech and just sounded a bit stuffy after waking up, once he hit his stride it was one of his best. He does have a pulse on what is going on.

184. Earlier this primary season I made the comment that WI
would not count (that is where I am from) as it seemed all over but the shoutin', but now, I am glad that my vote on Tuesday will make a difference.
This guy knows what we need right now, and that is not a lightening rod, not a polarizing figure, but a hopeful one. I like what I am hearing more and more. Am I right, has he fine-tuned his health care stance to make it more comprehensive and cover everyone now?

185. I think, for the first time, he CLOSED THE DEAL.
Some will say his speech was angry.

It was passionate.

Some will say it was canned.

He went for consistency, still managing to expertly address all the arguments against his candidacy, against his plans, and against his character in a fresh way.

Some will ask did he "fire up the base?"

He's firing up America.

We've become so entrench in the Us versus Them mentality, in Red versus Blue, that I think we've become a product of that insular mentality. So much so, that when someone comes around and wants to bridge that gap, wants to reach out beyond our comfort zone, we're hostile and distrustful of such a person.

But the time is here and its now. We have someone offering change we can truly believe in.
