The Republican game-plan is always to define the Democratic candidate before the conventions. But with the Democratic race likely to drag on, and Obama looking likelier and likelier, they need to define him before he defines himself through the endless ads and free media of the Dem campaign, which is going to remain the top national news story for as long as it lasts.
So after a lengthy Republican "hands off" policy toward Obama, we are starting to see Obama "character" criticisms from the RW. I expect that to be only the beginning... whether you think the Republicans want to run against Hillary or want to run against Obama, it no longer matters. At this point, they need to beat down both candidates.
Keep in mind that defining the Democratic candidate is 100% of the Republican strategy. McCain has no chance of winning a positive campaign. People just aren't into Iraq that much.
The MSM currently does a decent job of beating down Hillary, so the RW attacks will have to concentrate on defining Obama for the time being. But if Hillary's press improves, the RW will be going at both at the same time.
Because of this unusually close Democratic primary season, they just don't have the option of backing one or the other... it's too close to call so they need to destroy both candidates.
