3. I don't see how it's offensive at all.
I hear people say that kind of thing on TV- or even on DU- all the time. It's a common political phrase.

It's kind of biting, but that's not much of a complaint.

8. Why don't you listen to those who found it offensive explain why.
Especially women.

This reminds me of the debates about the confederate flag, and white people claiming it's not offensive. If it's offensive to black people it's offensive! If this is offensive to women -- even some of them -- it's offensive! It doesn't have to be offensive to YOU for you to understand the fact that others feel differently.

21. Most women consider it an insult to be likened to a whore.
It's generally intended as an insult.

To be "pimped out" implies an analogy with a streetwalker, and a position of being used and disempowered by a man -- in this case, the pimp was analogized to her parents. Given that most streetwalkers are women, it's not an easy reversal, nor a familiar one, to say a young man was "pimped out" by his parents.

(It calls up a stereotype that is insulting to women -- the same way black people are insulted by someone likening them to drug dealers or good-rhythm dancers who eat watermelon. Some may be drug dealers, some may dance well and enjoy watermelon, and YOU might not be offended if someone said YOU had great rhythm, etc., but that doesn't mean others' experiences give them a different perspective and reaction.)

Further, I've never heard such an expression used by a respected journalist on a credible national cable news network. This was not a clown, not a rightwing asshat, not Faux news or some guy's blog.

24. Is there a stereotype that all women are prostitutes?
Edited on Fri Feb-08-08 09:28 PM by BullGooseLoony
That would be a new one for me.

But, anyway, my point is that analogizing politicians to prostitutes occurs...quite frequently, to say the least. All the time. Like, ALL the time. It's downright common. Have you honestly never heard someone make that analogy before?

Either way, I get the feeling it won't be the last time you've heard it, so....I don't know, you better be stocked up and ready to do a lot of whatever it is you do when you get offended, cuz we've still got 10 months till the election.

25. No, but more women than men are prostitutes
and I think more women than men have been called "whores."

I have never heard anyone like David Schuster use the term "pimped out" on national television in reference to a young woman like Chelsea Clinton, no.

I don't blame the Clintons for feeling offended.

For what it's worth, Media Whores Online was one of my favorite sites. I think sex work should be legal or decriminalized. I think the plight of streetwalkers with pimps is often a sad one of desperation, but there are also sex workers who've made the choice quite deliberately, and I think that's fine (and think legalization could put pimps out of business).

So it's not about prostitution or the word "whore," just as it's not about "great rhythm" or watermelon, which are not offensive words -- the context has to be considered. Someone like David Schuster likening someone like Chelsea Clinton to a whore, and her mother to a pimp, offended people. Period.

26. That's awfully attenuated reasoning.
More men are in our armed forces than women.

So, should men be more offended if our troops are insulted than women?

27. *sigh*
"You're a troop" is not an insult.

I explained why it's offensive to others. You can accept it or not -- the same way people display confederate flags insisting they're not offensive because THEY don't find them offensive.

34. Do you REALLY not get this, or are you working at it??
1.) There is not a history of men being oppressed in our culture. So there is no analogous insult I can think of.
2.) The term "whore" is far more often applied to women than "babykillers" is applied to men.
3.) I pointed out the use of stereotypes and insults and explained why they are offensive.
4.) I pointed out that this is not about the word nor about the occupation of sex workers.
5.) I explained that context is critical.

You've now cherrypicked ONE aspect of this -- the reason men aren't likely to feel they've been likened to streetwalkers if called "whore," and thus insulted in the same way -- and are attempting to draw ridiculous conclusions from it.

I explained to you why it's offensive to women. If you STILL don't get it, make snide remarks to a few women comparing them with hookers and maybe they'll tell you more clearly than I can.

I'm done.

40. You're not explaining it well.
You seem to be saying that women are offended by the word "prostitute" (or whore or pimp or whatever).

No, that doesn't make sense.

Now, if you were to say that a prostitute would be offended by the use of the word "whore," that would make more sense- that's a derogatory term.

Clinton is not Schuster's client. Clinton is Schuster's political fodder, as is every politician.

While your job may not involve making critical statements about the people you work for (it's difficult to find a position like that), Schuster's job does involves making critical statements about those who thrust themselves into the political limelight.
