I like Hillary Clinton. I think she's a better person than her husband, and I like the fact that she's a woman. I think sexism is still rampant in the country, and this forum has provided many examples. But, I can't support her because she is running a lousy campaign. She has squandered huge leads and continues to run a dull, ineffective campaign. Like her husband, she tales few chances.
First, she should be campaigning heavily in black communities. As a moral issue, she owes it to them after the idiotic comments her husband made. She should be talking about issues of importance to blacks, including affirmative action, programs to help the inner cities, and so on. But, instead, her campaign is acting like black people are a monolithic group who will no matter what vote for Obama because he is black. In this way, her campaign is ignorant.
Second, she is making the same mistake with women, only calling on them when it is politically necessary. I think Hillary Clinton is something of a feminist, and she should be moving their issues front and center. But, instead, she hardly ever talks about issues that are important to women, such as equal pay and opportunity, sexism in the media, and so on.
Third, the fact that she still doesn't have a good answer to her IWR vote is incredible. If she wants to stick with her vote (which they say is because to apologize would play into the stereotype that women are indecisive), then she should certainly know how to defend it by now. I found her answer to that question in the last debate almost shocking in its ineptitude.
Fourth, the commercials of hers I've seen online are so flat. Why isn't she trying to excite people with her commercials? Instead, she's merely informing them. Obama is presenting a vision (without much substance), while Clinton is merely making promises. She's a boring and safe candidate, still running as if she's 20 points ahead in the polls.
Hillary Clinton is running as a white male candidate, and frankly if people want a white male candidate, they will vote for the real thing, John McCain. Obama is running as who he is, and he is running a superb campaign. The fact that he probably has the edge over Clinton in the nomination is a testament to his strengths as a candidate and the ability of his campaign to take advantage of that. If we want a Democratic president, like or not, Obama is the only choice.
