A message to the would-be peacemakers
Knock it off.

Seriously, knock it off. Your pleas for unity and compromise will have zero effect on this board. People post vitriol and flames here because we like it and enjoy a good brawl, as odd and foreign as that might seem. Some people just get their kicks that way, and there's nothing wrong with it, and we resent being told that we're going to "destroy" anything by acting in our nature. Politics has never been kind, nice, and civil, and it never will be.

All you do by attempting to stop it is to open yourselves up to being a target of the flaming that you say you abhor so much.

5. I've never asked for "nice and civil", but literate and honest would be nice!
Edited on Thu Feb-07-08 02:13 PM by Uncle Sinister
I've been campaigning since 1976, mostly for losing candidates, I know politics is a rough and tumble game. That's fine, I'm a big boy, can take care of myself, and have gone through flame wars that make GD:P look like a kiddies slap fight.

Problem here, is that most of the brawling here, on BOTH sides, is ignorant, illiterate, dishonest, and uninformed. If you are going to start a knife fight, at least learn how to use a knife! And for god's sake don't LIE! Spin all you wish, but try and keep at least a toehold in reality. (very difficult for some, I know)

I love a good dust-up, but watching children scream "did not" did so" back and forth ad nauseum, gets tiring very fast.

Note: this is an equal opportunity thing. My ignore list is almost 50/50 between
Hillbots and Obamainiacs.

Would love to see a flame ware involving some triple-digit IQ folk here for a change.

7. sorry that isn't possible- or constructive-
at least IMO-

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.
