A debate a week...what, and give the Clinton's free air time?
their campaign is going broke and it's THE reason Mister Mark Thinks He's Slick Penn wants the debates. The Clinton Machine had to dig 5 million of their own money out last month and now they think they can trick Obama into essentially giving them FREE ADVERTISING with a debate a week....say NO to that ruse Barack...

wouldn't notice that obama would be getting the same air time. what ARE you afraid of?

That said a debate a week is a bit much, I think they should have maybe 2 more debates.

tell me again why you don't think the two main candidates should be debating each other? (apart from the idiocy of those moderating the debates, I mean)

lose interest in our candidates if they're on the tube every week droning on about their policy
proposals. No thanks.

5. It's A Sign Of Weakness When A Candidate Starts Asking For Debates........
it's a ploy to get the other guy to not go along with. When that happens - you claim the guy doesn't want to debate cause he has nothing to say, etc.

This is a sign of desperation on the part of HRC's campaign. It will be interesting to see how Obama handles this.

23. Too Late - They Already Struck First.........
reading Obama's response in Post #11 - it will be interesting to see how the HRC Campaign counters that. If you thought things were contentious up to now - wait - it will get brutal.

It's been interesting to watch these two campaigns during this primary season. We have HRC's campaign with her political operatives that are tried and true down in the trench players - that have been through this many times before and will unleash everything in their arsenal. Then we have BO's group which seems to me to beat the Clinton's every time on just outwitting them. It's been fascinating to watch.

11. Here is Obama's very astute and congenial...
...response to Hillary's suggestion of 4 debates.

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/02/06/obama-more-rounds-to-fight/

“I think the Clinton camp’s basic attitude was that the whole calendar was set up to deliver the knockout blow on Feb. 5,” Mr. Obama said. “And not only did we play them to a draw, we won more delegates and we won more states. What that means is that we are in a fierce competition and we’ve got many more rounds to fight.”
But Mr. Obama said most of that fighting would be done on the ground in the next voting states, not in debates. When asked whether he would accept the invitation from Mrs. Clinton to attend four more debates in the coming weeks, he laughed.

“I don’t think anybody is clamoring for more debates,” he said. “We’ve had 18 debates so far. I think we’ve had 10 more than we’ve had in the last Democratic contest.”
He said he would agree to at least one debate, but noted, “It’s very important for me to spend time with voters.”

35. Isn't it though? Obama is playing it beautifully!
I was thrilled when I saw that statement from him.

Clearly, he has the advantages: Money, legions of supporters. He can
buy ad time. She can't.

He tactfully and graciously said no to her suggestion--which would have
eroded his current advantages and solved some of her problems.

I just LOVE that he did this.

It demonstrates that he is not afraid to say no to her. It demonstrate
that he can take on the Clinton machine and win.

He's right, they've had 18 debates already. One more debate is plenty, one a week is too much.

He said it in a nice way, but he said it.

I'm so proud of him.

I was afraid that he might kow tow to her, and agree to a stream of debates.

He knows that Hillary's flying monkeys will be out in full force--accusing him
of hiding and suggesting that he's afraid of this and not open about that.

He's willing to take the heat, because the consequence is that she has little
national media attention and he can buy it--courtesy of generous contributions
from his legions of supporters.

She wants free media coverage, because she can't afford to buy her own.

Her staff is apparently going without pay, and she's borrowing money to keep her
campaign ship a sailin'.

Obama said "NO" because it was a strategic move, on his part, to deny her
several hours of free media coverage every week.

If you think this was really about "debates" then you are completely naive.

Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 05:17 PM by TwoSparkles
...but Barack can say no, as he should.

She's running out of money and doesn't have the dough for national ads.

She's trying to solve her money and campaign problems, by getting free
air time, via debates.

Did you see Obama's response to her? It was beautiful. He basically said that
this time should be spent with the VOTERS.

He's got an advantage, with his army of volunteers and an endless supply of contributions
from "average Americans". It's not Obama's fault that Hillary is in short supply of both.
She shouldn't make her problems about him.

He kindly rebuffed Hillary's suggesting of four debates--knowing exactly that she's schlepping
for free media exposure.

Now watch, as Hillary bites back, because Obama won't play. Hillary will release her flying
monkeys, who will be all over the airwaves, insisting that Obama is hiding from the public and denying
the public access to the candidates.

If he agrees she's in good shape. If he doesn't, the perception could easily tilt towards thinking he's afraid to do so, among people still candidate shopping.
