Guys! PROOF that souls CAN be saved! My republi-CON neighbors
Edited on Sat Feb-02-08 07:25 PM by calimary
just put an Obama sign out in their front yard!

In their FRONT YARD!!!

Holy frickin' COW! COW-comma-Holy!

I am still in shock!

I will admit, though, that back in 2000, when the man of that family and I took all our kids around the neighborhood to trick-or-treat on Halloween, he and I talked some politics and he was for mccain back then. And he lamented that "george bush is SO STOOOOOOOOOOPID." I know they went ahead and voted for him, though. Well, looks like mccain loses 'em this time, too.

They went with their youngest daughter to see him speak here last Thursday and she got to shake his hand. They related that story to us with great pride, saying they thought he could really unite the country and they really liked how he was "all about hope" - they kept saying "he just gives everybody so much hope!" And I said I thought it would be so wonderful to have Obama's be America's Face to the World - especially after we've so thoroughly shat upon the Third World for so long. They agreed enthusiastically, and they added that they thought he might even be able to build coalitions in the Islamic world - to promote peace.

Man.

Now I've seen everything.

NEVER thought I'd see this day.

Maybe there really is hope!

I just wanted to share that with you - I'll be walking on air for the rest of the weekend, I think!

NEVER thought I'd see this day. Especially from these neighbors. They've come home! Into The Light! All is forgiven!

What a nice day!

:toast:  :woohoo:

Shocked, but HAPPY!

The ultimate pleasant surprise.

It would be almost like hearing one of the bushes or limbaugh or somebody was gonna vote for Obama (although if it were limbaugh, I'd have to work at it to say "all is forgiven" - ).

6. They are some of the disaffected Repubicans who will be voting for Obama, if we are smart enough to
make him our nominee--rather than lose in November with the Clintons, who will unite, not our party, but the Republican party. Let's not lose the only chance we have had in a very long time, to not only expand our party, but to unite the country with a working majority for change!

16. Yes, it IS!
My best friend, who's spent too much of her adult life hanging around with stuntmen and weekend cowboys and rednecks (and sadly, voted that way, too), has also come around. The last time we talked politics, she was all excited about Obama!

Yes. Souls CAN be saved. Not all of 'em (judging by the slivers of the population that still cling to bush). But enough of 'em to get US back in the White House, I suspect.

12. Thinking strategically, I'm beginning to think it would be the wisest
Edited on Sat Feb-02-08 07:48 PM by calimary
move on the chess board.

There's this "Sense of the Sisterhood" in me that's awfully strong and compelling. I LOVE her brains. I just do. But she has all that baggage and we'd never hear the end of it with Whitewater, Bill and Monica, bimbo eruptions, and all the rest of it. We'd Never. Hear. The. End. Of. It.

And I'm becoming more convinced that HIS is what should be America's Face to the World. Imagine how that would speak to the Muslim world - when they start seeing something/someone from the dreaded, reviled US - who looks kinda like them, who seems like he'd be more open and more sympathetic, might be more approachable (people hate what they don't understand, what seems strange and alien and foreign to them), it would be SO healing and refreshing. It would do SO MUCH to rehabilitate us in the eyes of the rest of the world, where we are now grievously afflicted and our wounds are strictly self-inflicted. Someone new who doesn't come with a lot of baggage. And think how it would make us feel, deep down, about ourselves as a nation. In ONE individual there would be a sense of maturity and evolution - a physical symbol of how we've actually grown up a little and gotten over ourselves and come to our senses on the issue of race - that we've FINALLY triumphed over that huge and very shameful skeleton in our closet, the millstone around our necks, of slavery and racial inequality. This would be one amazing symbol of growth, and the emergence of our higher selves.

How could that be a bad thing?

Besides, I kinda relish the idea of mumbling something subtle about white sheets to CONservatives who oppose him. Sorry... there's too much of a "they need to get the snot beaten out of 'em" feeling in me. Can't quite disabuse myself of that, yet. I said "WE" would be grown up. I never said "I" would be!

Sorry - I just feel like a real snot-nose today!

Something completely and dramatically different. A REAL change. Not just a lip-service one or a half-assed one or a pretend one. Even Hillary said it recently - all you have to do is just look at the two of them there and you know there's a change in the wind. And we've HAD business as usual. Up the ass. And look where we are. I'm certainly ready to change direction!

52. Perhaps he likes what the GOP used to stand for, or what many of us
including the true believers on that side of the aisle THINK the GOP stood for. The small government, lower spending, lower taxes thing. AND that hilarious part about keeping big government out of your private life -

The GOP doesn't stand for that anymore. Hasn't for a long time.

And all we need to know about mccain is three things (straight from his own "straight talkin'" lips):
1) the jobs aren't coming back,
2) there will be more wars,
3) we'll be in Iraq for 100 years.

Hey, sounds like a real winner to me! :sarcasm:

Obama would be forced to govern from the center due to his largely non-leftist base and his insistence on appearing "uniting".

64. Even if so, you'd have to look at who he's likely to bring into power with him.
We all better do that. That was one of the main arguments in presenting george w. bush palatably to the masses. Yes, he was considered STOOOOpid. I lost count of how many people I knew who told me "...but, but, but... it won't matter because he's going to surround himself with GOOD PEOPLE!!!" Yeah. He sure did, didn't he? cheney, contradicta, rummy, dougie feith, stephen cambone, scooter, rove, wolfowitz, elliot abrams, ashcroft, the whole lot. He was being advised by the frank gaffneys and bill kristols of the world, and other fiends from the PNAC - and its mother organization, the American Enterprise Institute. And look where we are. Scumbuckets on parade who looked out only for the pirates, warmongers, corner-cutters, wheeler-dealers, and other scumbuckets.

I think it's a very safe bet to assume that either Obama or Clinton would not be bringing the same group of criminals into power with them as assistants and advisors and colleagues. Especially Obama. That's key. It's also a safe bet, knowing where both Obama and Clinton stand on the issues, that we would be likely to have a VASTLY improved selection of nominees to the bench, be it Supreme Court, appeals courts, and farther down. We'd have a VASTLY improved set of candidates for all the cabinet positions and agencies, from either Clinton or Obama, mainly because neither believes that government is the problem, but rather an instrument of doing good for the most people, especially the little guy as opposed to the high-roller or corporate fat-cat. So you would then be able to expect that there would be fewer ill-equipped, ulterior motive-driven cronies or other foxes nominated to guard the hen houses. You wouldn't have a bunch of cheapskate short-sighted assholes put in charge of agencies and departments - who believe that those same agencies and departments shouldn't exist in the first place. You just wouldn't have that kind of mentality governing such selections. It WOULD be different. Because the basic mindset is different.

Maybe you'd have an Obama forced to govern from the "center" but the basic overview of what constitutes a "center" would be different from a Democrat than from a regressive republi-CON - whose pals have spent the last few decades trying to pull that "center" radically to the so-called "right." I'd rather have one of MY people in there, working on his or her definition of these political terms, than the mindset that you'd have from ANY of the republi-CONS, who would see those same political terms entirely differently, and utterly hostile to the views my team has.

I find libertarians most intriguing. On paper it sounds great. No government! Get it all outta here. NO interference! Don't tread on me! And in Ron Paul's view, no war, and legalize drugs! (My high school-age son says all his friends love Ron Paul because they heard he's against the war and he wants to legalize all drugs and that's enough for them, that's all they need to hear. And yet, that's not even half the story!) Yeah, but I'm sure they'd still insist on having their trash picked up on time every week, and all potholes fixed before they break a front axle driving over them, and fire departments ready to respond in an emergency, and SOMEBODY inspecting our food and our toys and our pet food and other imports from China so our kids and animals aren't poisoned. THAT'S WHY WE HAVE A FEDERAL GOVERNMENT!!! Even some of the most arch-conservatives out there and the most strident anti-government activists had to concede that it would have been nice to have an effective FEMA on the case during and after Hurricane Katrina - especially when such a disaster overwhelms the local or state ability to cope, AND that same disaster crosses state lines. Which then renders it a federal matter. You NEED a federal government for more than just war-making. In this day and age, you just do. That's the reality. And you need tax money to fund that government and the services it provides. If the private sector could handle things properly, honestly, responsibly, with accountability and with integrity, without having to be watched and regulated to prevent corner-cutting and shortsighted quarterly profit-taking, I think we'd have already seen it. But in the real world, that's just not how it works out.

39. Yeah, I'm wondering if there might be far more of them than there might be
of disaffected Republicans who will vote for Clinton.

I'm still a little conflicted. I YEARN to vote for a woman for president. And I think Hillary is so smart. I love imagining that caliber of brain-power and the willingness to be active with it - applied to all the colossal problems we now have. I think it would take that kind of towering intellect put to work. But shit... I'm just afraid of the baggage - and how it would indeed unite the republi-CONS and give the waverers reason to stay on the reservation. We want 'em all busting out, through every little break in the fences, and clamoring to get to our safe haven. It's almost as if we're here yelling to 'em as their ship is taking on water - "HEY! OVER HERE!!! COME ON!!! WE GOT YER LIFEBOATS HERE!!!" Besides, if they're either demoralized by the perceived inevitability of an Obama victory, and they stay home, OR they defect, it only works out all the better farther down the line. After all, EVERY member of the House of Reps is up for renewal, and a third of the Senate - with far more GOP seats at risk than Dems. I'm beginning to think our chances for a rather smashing victory may well be FAR better with Barack.

Besides, dammit, I just can't get past the idea of HIM being America's Face to the World. With a whole lot of the world flowing through his arteries and veins, how could it not help us start rehabilitating ourselves and rejoining the family of nations, instead of being this arrogant rogue menace that nobody trusts, nearly everybody fears, and few people want to do business with?

17. I'm still somewhat stunned about it.
They have several daughters. The oldest one, when she was getting ready to go to college years ago, came over to our house to get some help tie-dying some towels to take with her - and she chose one of the republi-CON convention days to do it. She said she just HAD to get out of the house. She couldn't stand it. "I just don't agree with any of that," she kept saying. "I just don't agree with them. Any of them." For awhile she was the odd "man" out in that family. I joked with her that ours was a "safe house" and she could always come over here and take refuge if it got too republi-CON over at her place. Now, it looks like the rest of them are following her lead. They're not ready to tie-dye yet, but hey - I've got time! I've waited this long...

I am really feeling great about this!

35. Yeah. Some of them are using that other head - the one on top of their
necks.

These folks were for mccain in 2000, until dubya peed on their parade. They voted reluctantly for the cardboard cowboy, because they were loyal to the GOP. I guess they can't stomach it now.

Well, like they say about big Irish families - there's always room for one more! In this case, not just one more voter - one more FAMILY! So let's see... that makes four votes among them for Obama, and their youngest will be 18 in time to vote in the general. I happen to know she's ARDENTLY for Obama already! It's a good night! I swear to Dearest God, I NEVER thought I'd see this day. These were the ultimate, old-school, life-long Republicans. With a capital R, smart, discerning, good parents, responsible citizens, the upstanding, somewhat aristocratic type. He once teased me when I came home with a new car that was a substantial upgrade (for ME anyway) and said "hey! Before you know it, you're gonna start voting Republican!" Today, I said - "Welcome Home!"

Obamans want their guy to do so. I have a feeling that by the time we're at the convention (or whenever this gets decided) that we will all be united behind one candidate and one goal. There really isn't any alternative. If it's Hillary, I will absolutely be there. If it's Barack, I will absolutely be there. And I think most, if not all, of the Clinton supporters, if she doesn't go the distance, WILL fold in with all the rest of us Dems.

I mean - what's the alternative? Voting for the GOP????????

15. McCain is so hated in the GOP
that Republics would rather vote for Hillary than McCain. Think about it...

So after golf this afternoon, at the little hole-in-the-wall-beer-joint we go to afterwards, and after a lull in the conversation, Hillary was on TV live making a speech. So, ever the pot stirer, I motioned toward the TV and said, "See that? That's the next president of the United States." All hell broke loose between us Democrats and the Republics there. But when all was finished, 5 of the 6 Republics said they'd vote for Hillary in November before they vote for McCain. They see her as moderate enough to stomach.

Absolutely friggin' amazing.

21. Jeez, you are a bigger person than I am forgiving them for
voting for Bush* - ! - I probably would have had a spite fence up for the last 7 years -- seriously, though, I imagine there's about 50 million people or so looking for that forgiveness. We are all in this together, and for the first time, I am getting the sense that perhaps many in this Country can come to a consensus as to whom might be that best face and voice to represent us. Beyond that, Obama has the additional magnets of intelligence, dignity and straightforwardness, all rare commodities in a politician. I guess Tuesday will tell the tale if the majority see him in that light.

Michelle is an incredibly fine example to all women.

Should he win, there's one campaign promise he will HAVE to keep - he promised his beautiful daughters they could have a puppy in the White House. No wonder they sometimes appear on the campaign trail - they have a huge investment in this.

Nice to talk to you again, Mary, I hope to see you posting more here.

and their sleeping toddler when he had to take her to the hospital to have their next baby. The baby after that spent half her time growing up at our house. Best friends with my daughter, married my son when they were all in the bathtub together one afternoon when they were four and he was about 2 (didn't last - they got divorced a few days later). I took them all trick-or-treating around the neighborhood year after year after year, and we exchanged sleepovers til as recently as Christmas break when my daughter was home from college and made a beeline for their house. So with them it's kinda hard to hold a grudge, but it was also hard to have a meeting of the minds. We never spoke exactly the same language. He's the executive type who does the country club scene. My guy likes to hang out and play music and watch "Star Trek" on DVD. But hey - I'm gonna make room for 'em, FOR SURE!

65. I heard a story today told by Oprah during her LA campaigning
Did you hear this -- it immediately made me think of this thread.

Oprah mentioned she had been discussing politics with many of her friends, some of whom are Republicans. She has had very interesting discussions and received favorable feedback. But one of the best stories relayed to her by her Republican friends concerned the night when the family sat down to watch the Republicans debate. After a few moments, the three-year son inquired, "Where is Rock O'Mama?"

I think our 2008 candidates are instilling a lot of emotions into a lot of families, regardless of their political labels - inspiration, awe, humility, onenationness (like that word?) and last but not least, humor. They do us proud.

Once again, I am proud to be an American, and secondarily, I am very proud to be a Democrat. But most of all, I am so proud of that three-year old who had the audacity to hope his Republican parents could find Rock O'Mama for him! We need to find that kid and put him in a commercial!

you feel..I just got off the phone with my sister here in New York and I was telling her about Obama being endorsed by the Native American Times http://www.nativetimes.com/index.asp?action=displayarticle&article_id=9295 and the people like Ted Kennedy and Caroline Schlossberg endorsing him so magnificently..I wasn't sure who she was for but she said she watched some of the early debates online and thought Obama was an intelligent man and she liked the way he stated his thoughts and she wanted to like hilary but she didn't. I'm over the Moon that she sees that in Obama we have someone who can lead, with our help, in making our country honorable instead of something to fear and ridicule.

I love your evolution story about your neighbor..it sounds like it was really illuminating to be able to see Obama speak in the flesh.

42. UPDATE: The youngest daughter arrived at our door about an hour ago.
She brought us an Obama yard sign. She was all atwitter. She'd just come back from walking precincts all over Santa Monica - ringing doorbells and talking to people about Obama. Wanted to know if we'd like the sign. Uh - WOULD we?!?!?!?!? My husband and I both walked out with her and she helped us plant it. And I told her how cute her mom was a few hours earlier. She was concerned that maybe they should take the sign down before the sprinklers ran in the yard, because she didn't want it to get ruined.

I tell ya - I'm FLOORED. FUCKING FLOORED. BTW - I heard from my daughter a little later and told her the "guess what happened in the ol' neighborhood today?" and she already knew. And she was very excited!

As I said - I. Am. Completely. FLOORED. Absolutely GOBSMACKED.

43. Yeah, no kidding! I'm suddenly feeling SO upbeat and hopeful.
We ARE living in a monumental era. I'm glad I'm gonna see it.

Then again, I've felt for some time now that I could vote for either Barack OR Hillary, and either way we win. EITHER WAY. EITHER WAY we make history. EITHER WAY, we implement change, we initiate a dramatic and historic course correction. Like the Publisher's Clearinghouse sweepstakes - "you may already be a winner!" I feel like one now. The old way hasn't worked, doesn't hold, and won't prevail. And all the other side has got is more of the same - old way. And it feels SO great to think that it's OUR party, OUR side, that's gonna bring in this historic change! US! The very same people who've been demonized, villified, scorned, laughed at, shouted down, bullied, insulted, subverted, smacked around, and kicked in the teeth. And yet WE are the ones who will triumph in the end.

Besides, I think what you just said is precisely what will be going through the minds of millions upon millions of people across the globe. "There IS hope for America."

46. It feels almost like some big Rip van Winkle is slowly waking up.
Or like a wholesale thaw after a long, cold, bitter winter. Like the sun breaking through the clouds and the wind dying down after Hurricane Katrina thoroughly ransacked the place. I just wish this epiphany hadn't been so long in coming.

And, let's not forget, we're still just going through the opening rounds. The decisive battles are still ahead.

48. Somehow I doubt it. I'm not sure they're ready to take that big a step.
But hey, I'll take what I can get. A baby step is just fine! That's how it usually starts, anyway!

32. He breaks through the politics of fear
and helps people look at each other with love. It doesn't happen all at once, but he just keeps at it and sooner or later, the walls come tumbling down.

That is such an awesome story!!!

49. Yep. Baby steps. It lifts us up and out of the morass.
Especially when all the other guys are offering is more of the same shit that is already PROVEN to be an ABYSMAL FAILURE. Hey, America! You know all those policies that haven't worked? Let's have MORE of them, 'eh? Yeah! That's the ticket! Bring 'em on! 9/11!

I suspect there is a massive examination of conscience going on, on a nationwide scale: Do we REALLY want more of the same? The same stuff that we've had in place for almost eight years and hasn't worked - and hasn't worked in an staggeringly COLOSSAL way? And I suspect a whole lot of people, even in the GOP, are even now secretly answering "no."

Amazing.

54. Maybe we've reached the critical mass stage - where what we've all
had to live through for the past seven-and-some year nightmare just can no longer be stomached. If this transcends party loyalty, it's a movement!

34. My cynical independent mother
hates almost all politicians. I talked to her about Biden, hates him. Told me that my guy Edwards was a total con artist, trust her. McCain, can't stand him. Huckabee is laughable, Romney the republicans Edwards. These are her words, mind you. She hates Hillary and maybe hate isn't extreme enough.

So, mom what do you think about Obama? I kinda like him! Wha? Huh? Kinda like is the biggest endorsement you'll ever get from my mother about a politician. She's a green leaning independent, social conservative. So there you go.

I'm guessing there are going to be many such revelations in the days ahead. Especially as Obama gathers momentum. And Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg can't be wrong. All this and the Princess of Camelot, too.

Just an AMAZING year this has been so far.

That's a great story, btw! Thanks for sharing it! Hug your mom for me/us! :grouphug: :toast:  :patriot:

I swear, I will be smiling about that sign and shaking my head in disbelief for the rest of the year. Miracles do happen. And pigs do fly. And the staunch GOP neighbors vote Dem.

I'm still glad she's on OUR team. Like I said, I SO admire her formidable brain power. It's good for us all that she chooses to apply it to public service. She could just be out doing lunch and reading Neiman Marcus catalogues or something...

62. Yeah, I think you're correct. This IS history in the making.
Actually, we Dems stand to make history either way. The first black president or the first woman president. But I'm wondering if perhaps we have a better shot with the candidate with less baggage.

THINK STRATEGICALLY, guys. Who constitutes our strongest card?

Man, just had to go pick up my-son-the-guitar-player, and we drove back home and pulled into the driveway and DOGGIES! There's that sign again! And I'm not talking our sign in the front yard. THEIR sign in THEIR front yard. I didn't imagine it. I wasn't dreaming. I'm still wide awake. And it's for real.

Sumbitch...

Hell just froze over in West L.A.
