Reality check: Have our candidates learned anything since 2000?

It's not going to make any difference if Obama can inspire, or if Hillary is competent. When the going gets tough, will either of them fight back? Since we know that both will be swiftboated, how will they respond? Do they realize what they're up against?

Don't give me this "of course they do." That's anything but a given. Remember how tough Pelosi and Reid, both experienced politicians who have been around the block a few times, were going to be?

Sometimes it seems like our side lacks street smarts, something Edwards had in spades.

2. lessons learned...

...I hope we've learned that the reason that nearly half of the electorate fails us isn't "they're just stupid rubes--if we explain our policies r-e-a-l s-l-o-w maybe they'll get it". It may be our policies.

Also, petty sniping and cutesy namecalling and disrespect may throw red meat to the base...but hanging the other party's failed policies squarely around their cadidates' necks (and proving yours are better) is so much more effective.
