"Women shouldn't vote for Hillary just because she's a woman."
That's all I heard when I pointed out that women are the most oppressed people on the planet. And I completely agree with that. Yet from Obama supporters here I'm getting a somewhat different perspectives over the race of their candidate.

So how is it?

3. I think it's fine for people to weigh the positives of Obama's race and Clinton's gender
as heavily as they choose.

It's not insignificant!

4. In what ways would race or gender effect how someone governs?
When you come up with an answer email it to Bill, he needs another excuse.

being a woman under the regime of Margaret Thatcher -I didn't see too many women-friendly policies.

7. I got scolded for saying women are oppressed, because they thought it implied I was for Hillary.
Meaning that women should vote for Hillary just because she's a woman. Of course that wasn't my intent.

8. Mind if I say "bullshit"?
I have yet to see a single Obama supporter claim that black Democrats would or should vote for Obama just because he's black.

In fact, the only people I see bringing it up are Hillary supporters.

So I say, bullshit.

9. I'm not saying they're calling for that.
I'm saying they seem to have no problem with that being the case when it is suggested, and anyone who does so is "racist" even though they're merely pointing out the demographics.

10. Say it? Of course you never say it.
Do you know how an actor cries onstage? By standing there and trying his damnedest NOT to cry. Obama supporters kept screaming the Clintons are saying it! (Meanwhile injecting the offensively sexist meme that Hillary Clinton is merely a wife and we'll really be re-electing Bill..."The Clintons") And people believed you. Because Obama people should know if they're offended or not.

So cry innocent to someone else. I saw you do it.

11. No. IMNSHO this is "projection" - take the opponent's strength (not *playing* his race) and turn it
on it's ear 180 degrees.

Damn! All that blow-back must sting?

Remember, it's your angry, red-faced "big dog" and other DLC Clintonian operatives who insulted the good people of South Carolina (and perhaps the nation) with the revival of "The Southern Strategy."

Just perhaps it's time for you to LOOK WITHIN?

12. Oh please...women are not the most oppressed on the planet....
There are lots of groups that are more oppressed....like....homosexuals....atheists....heretics.

Gee...if you were looking for a job in America you would have a better chance to get it you were a woman than if you....were a man with a beard....or a visible tatoo...or a nose ring.

Who the hell is oppressing you anyhow? Your husband? Than leave! Your job...well, welcome to the rat race! If you are being held in slavery, read the Constitution and take appropriate measures. But please don't whine about being oppressed.

Actually, there is a good solution for those of you who think males are bad. Just get the fuck away from us and leave us alone. Better for you. Far better for us.

Oppressed? In a rat's arse.

14. Women are wonderful....probably better than men...but oppressed in USA?
If you stretch the definition of oppressed this far, just as many husbands are oppressed as wives, if not more.

23. The democratic nominee. I'm not voting in the primaries.
Lest one look up my post history, I have come out not in favor of the tactics that Obama supporters have used here, and I'm sorry, it's not a slight against you at all, merely an observation in general.

Any given morning 10-15 "Clinton hate" posts are "kicked" by a few prolific posters here. It's insane.

18. Domestic violence, murder and stalking by boyfriends/husbands, the use of our bodies as political
footballs. We still make less money than men and oh, yeah, over two hundred years of the image of a man in the position as the most powerful person in the country.

Yeah, I guess we have it great!

30. Before you psychoanalyze me, I am a strong supporter of womens liberation and have been for decades
However, to say that women...as a group....ie....all women....are the most oppressed group is hyperbole and inaccurate, at least in this country (I am aware that in some cultures this is so).

Do women have full equality with men on every level? No. Is there job descrimination in the workplace? Yes, there still is.

My issue is with the word oppressed. It cheapens the word's meaning to use it so lightly.

Our culture has reached the point where a woman has a good chance of getting nominated for president. That right there contradicts the notion that all women in America are "oppressed".

34. I understand that in other cultures, women are oppressed. Don't lecture me.
Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 07:35 PM by earthlover
I am talking about our culture. I do not think women as a group are the most oppressed in our culture. There are other groups who have less legal and social rights.

For example, women can marry. Homosexuals cannot. Before you try to sell women as being the most oppressed in our culture, please consider that today there are groups that have fewer legal rights than women as a group.

Discrimination against women is illegal in our country. In employment, in housing, and on down the line. If you want to talk about the most oppressed, look elsewhere.

I pointed out other groups that are more "oppressed". I think the anger is with the original post who whined that women are so oppressed.

Yet, I've been personally told I'm not old/smart enough to see that I'm a traitor to women because I don't currently support Hillary.

26. There's no problem in saying
Obama got a lot of support from blacks in South Carolina. But that combined with he can't win, only blacks support him, the only reason he won is because he's black, etc from the usual sources is troubling.

28. See, that's the main difference
:)

Plus, with certain posters you can see the intent that's behind it. It's the usual suspects (and all the candidates have usual suspects).

BTW, I haven't called anyone a racist (though I did questions someone's use of "monkey" when talking about Obama earlier ).

On this board I would say very very few have made issue with Hillary being a woman it's media hype. I am concerned about some tactics being used. The media are talking this divisive politics Obama's victory speech tells you who he is.
