God, I loathe Ralph Reed. He is said to have been the engineer of the McCain attacks in South Carolina. He's talking about running a "postive, optimistic" campaign. What a load of crap!

As for Rasmussen, beyond that fact that he's a GOP pollster who got 2000 very wrong, tracking polls done eight months before an election make no sense.

March 2, 2004--The Rasmussen Reports Presidential Tracking Poll today shows George W. Bush at 47%, John F. Kerry at 46%, and "some other candidate" at 3%.
The race appears to be stabilizing just before the Bush team launches their first ad campaign of the season. For the past eight days, and 12 of the last 14, the President's support has ranged from 47% to 49%.

The numbers for the Senator from Massachusetts have also been steady. On eight of the past eleven days, Kerry's support has been measured at 45%. Once, he was at 44%, twice (including today) at 46

All of these options skew a poll. Not to mention much depends upon where you take the poll, the economic strata of those polled, etc. Useless information.

Nationwide tracking polls done eight months before an election are not particularly useful because this far in advance it's really hard to get a real feel for likely voters.

We should only start worrying if we're down in September and October. But until then, things will just go back and forth like they usually do with Bush up one week, Kerry up the next.
