Kilroy Was Here!
Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 08:44 PM by CorpGovActivist
http://patrickj.smugmug.com/gallery/168336#12838273">At the new World War II Memorial, many people walk right by an easy-to-miss, yet poignantly whimsical, carving etched into one of the stones: http://patrickj.smugmug.com/gallery/168336#12838327-A-LB">Kilroy.

The theories on the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilroy_was_here">origins of good ol' Kilroy are fun to read. As more and more inconvenient facts break regarding the so-called Democratic and Republican frontrunners from mysterious sources, just remember: Kilroy Was Here!

3. Backside of the Memorial, toward Lincoln...
... and way down near the ground, by a service grate. Easy to miss, but heartwarming.

13. The World War I Memorial Is Oft-Overlooked...
http://www.dcpreservation.org/endangered/2003/warmemorial.html">It's so little, and tucked into a small grove of trees off the Mall.

The memorial to the "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_war_i">War to end all wars."

It's a tiny reminder of what we once stood for, and what we have become on the world stage.

12. I like Pynchon's version of the band-pass filter
I read that in "V" many years ago now, and always was partial to that "theory" for Kilroy.

Everything comes from the Signal corps...

17. This reminds me of when I was a little girl
in my aunt's garage and I found this old figurine. The figurine was of this young girl with her hair in braids and obviously pregnant and on the bottom it said "Kiroy was here". I asked my aunt about it she was  and said "Oh that's just something from WWII that people said and made a joke about". I was so young at the time I didn't get it, but now I see how funny it was and sure wish I had that figurine.

P.S. Besides the sentimental value, I imagine it'd do well on eBay.
