anybody besides me outraged at lawrence o'donnell's comments on KO last night?
he said, (roughly quoting) "nobody is upset about ronald reagan except a few left-wingers" and went on to talk about the week-long television coverage of his death and funeral, and how he was practically anointed a saint.

I wanted to throw something at him. WHY is this clueless cretin on KO or on huffpo?

note to lawrence: you are so wrong. there are MANY of us who haven't forgotten what he did TO this country.

(by the way, is he by any chance related to dear whora o'donnell?"

1. I had no choice but to accept his comments as true

Since there are Reagan apologists even on DU, he's probably right.

I was surprised to learn that some, even at a distinctly left site like DU, view Reagan differently than they do George W Bush (or Nixon).

But having seen it, I had to adjust me sense of public perception of Reagan's "legacy."

2. Even Nixon and Reagan Look Good When Compared to Bush**
That is not praising Nixon or Reagan, it is a statement of how bad Bush** is.

5. I laughed out loud when he made that comment.
Mr. O'Donnell, what MSNBC chooses to broadcast does NOT define reality. Just because MSNBC decided to pimp Reagan for a week doesn't mean people living in the real world actually bought that shit.

6. O'Donnell was covering Obama's ass...
Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 01:33 PM by Hell Hath No Fury
His comment was in response to KO's direct question about if Obama's pro-Ronnie remarks would hurt him.

Don't forget, O'Donnell earlier practically hung the "racist" label on Edwards for standing in the way of America's first black President. :eyes:

Ol' Larry has an agenda, it appears...

And yes, it infuriated me, especially as a Californian. I remeber w-a-y too much about "Saint" Ronnie to be suckered by Reagenbots or O'Donnell.

15. You must have really loved his claim that Californians just loooove Ronnie.
What a mendacious asshole.

And I'm pretty disgusted that Keith said *nothing* to counter any of his unadulterated bullshit.

25. Oh man I was s-t-e-a-m-i-n-g...
As someone who witnessed first hand the destruction of our State mental health care system, and the thousands of immigrants to my city that was a direct results of our war on Central America, and the destruction of my community due to HIV/AIDS -- all gifts from "Saint" Ronnie -- I want to go on record as saying,

"Fuck Ronald Reagan."

And fuck Lawrence O'Donnell.

at least that's what O'Donnell said. I remember Reagan from his days as governor, too. What a hateful piece of shit he was, with all that talk about bloodbaths and so on. :puke:

I'm glad he finally embarrassed her with that "Edwards is a racist" crap, there's no way she could defend that. I think she's just been sucking up to him for TV gigs (he produced West Wing, which she did appear on.)

and reflects a rationality not found on these boards.

I agree with him that discussing Reagan's effectiveness in the '80 (in pushing a conservative agenda on us)is simply not a crime, and that it only makes Democrats who are outraged at even the mention of Reagan, to be only a small minority.

Certainly Reagan was not good for this country....but certainly it has to be recognized that he knew how to get the American people on his side. To believe that a Democrat cannot make these observations only shows that we have become closed minded ideologues no better than those we point at and yell...."wrong"!

(believe me, living there, and having many friends there, I know better) and just generally making a saint out of him, ) is plain BS, and calling those who do it on their BS does not make us idealogues.

Lawrence O'Donnell
by Keith Olbermann
Fri Jan 18, 2008 at 02:00:01 PM EST
Forgive the fairly minor focus here but I spot at least three diaries on his appearance on Countdown last night to discuss Obama, Reagan, and Edwards.

Those of you complaining about it are right.

Keith Olbermann's diary :: ::
His HuffPo piece was news to me.

Shouldn't have been, obviously, but it was.

I don't read every blog, nor everything written by my guests. I often don't know until an hour beforehand who will be a guest on a given show (if it matters to you, these scheduling nightmares tend to come in waves for some reason, and last night was a Nor'easter). Also, to announce, on-air, each guest's preferences, prejudices, shillings and shiv jobs, would reduce the rest of the show to "Good Evening. Call Me Ishmael. My Boat Sank. The End. Good Night." And Lawrence O'Donnell's insight is almost always perceptive, relevant, and enlightened.

But even with these caveats, the point about this appearance, especially in the wake of such a freshly-written piece, is well-taken and I'm very sorry.

It will be addressed tonight on the show.

Thanks.

28. We are not objective on the issue of Reagan.
He is a popular president even though we hate him. Most of the country rates him as a great president.
Lawrence O'Donald understands this, we do not.

"Reagan's present-day, retrospective approval ratings are quite high, significantly higher than when he was in office."

"73% of people in a 2002 poll retroactively approved of Reagan's performance while in office, which is much higher than his 53% average at the time.
This places him 2nd out of the last 8 presidents, behind only Kennedy."
