"To say that men and women should not inject their "personal morality" into public policy...
is a practical absurdity; our law is by definition a codification of morality, much of it grounded in the Judeo-Christian tradition."

2. "Personal morality" is one thing, religion is something else.
I never got any "religion" while growing up. Personal morality I got from the standards my parents set.
And as far as "Judeo-Christian tradition" goes, I don't remember Buddha as being either Jewish or Christian-yet he taught many of the same things. There are versions of the "Golden Rule" in just about every religion.

6. How does anyone, you or IndianaJones, know where someone's
personal morality originates? It may partly come from religion, but it also originate from parents, school, friends, community. Heck, I have become less religious as I have gotten older, but I would contend that my personal morality, while it may have evolved on certain issues, has not wavered.

4. Guess it depends on your definition of "personal morality".
Most probably inject their own sense of right and wrong (their morals) on issues (poverty, abortion, illegal invasions, etc.) in the public arena. The trick, IMHO, is to remember that yours is one "personal morality" in the open competition of "moralities" in the public sphere.

Doesn't mean that you can't inject our own "pm" into politics, just that you shouldn't believe that yours is the only correct morality and everyone else is going the hell.

7. Again. Obama is right.
To some of us, social and economic justice is a "moral" pursuit.

Thanks.
