OK, after getting emotionally invested in several elections over the last few years, I'm just tired.
I'll admit, yesterday's results upset me. I was not expecting Obama to lose. This time, the polling was ridiculously off. The polls seemed to narrow a bit in the end, but I didn't recall seeing a poll showing him losing. After Bush's victory in '04, I wanted to believe the exit polls were right to SOME extent and a majority of Americans did not want him to preside over another four years. Maybe the polls just weren't accurate and it wasn't rigged after all(not that the GOP wouldn't attempt such a thing)...Maybe polling just isn't all that and the media is just incompetent (OK, no maybe here - they ARE incompetent).
But after spending the day away from the bickering on DU, the endless analysis in blogs, and the senseless rambling in the media, it felt good and I think it gave some perspective. The numbers look good for Dems in the fall (at least in NH). While Obama definitely shouldn't give up anytime soon, I'm no longer going to check out polls or rely on them. I'm convinced they are more or less worthless. People are fickle and irrational. It amazes me how undecided people are and that it takes until the last minute to decide who to vote for...but hey, I'm not very decisive either on many things...
I hope Obama still wins this, but if he doesn't, I'll vote for Hillary. Even in my fucked up state where she's the only real candidate on the ballot and no delegates aren't counted, I'll still vote. That's the least I can and should do. I'm not convinced she can win the general election, but I hope she proves me wrong.
Good luck to supporters of all candidates. I wish Edwards had a better chance going into the next primary, but after a distant third, it will be difficult for him to take any victories (I also was disappointed he repeated the same stories in his speech last night - it's one of his drawbacks I believe). I wish there was time to retool his campaign but I'm glad he'll stay in the race.
